Pretty bummed out that the vegas show got closed down, I wanted to go

It's closed? You're supposed to buy tickets there to be able to see the upcoming untelevised tournament, it's going to be a thing at least through October I thought.

Well that's a bummer all around.

Not really a huge surprise ticket sales are down. Hard to imagine ongoing interest in a several night a week show in Vegas that isn't some washed up singer or cirque du soleil.

F1 really did seem to gently caress them up good, too

They had finally gotten a license to serve alcohol, which would have massively increased profits and it's dumb it took over a year to happen

That sucks, I took my kid to Destructathon for his birthday, drove all the way there from Oregon. He even got to yell "It's Robot Fighting Time" into the mike w/the announcer.

Schedule released for the FaceOffs. I am surprised to see some of these teams because these are billed as "prequalifying matches" for the world championship, and you'd think, like, Lucky, Jackpot and Malice would not need to prequalify at all.![]() ![]() ![]()

A little concerning that they didn't have an actual photo of Ufwoe.

Traves T. also looks unfinished, so I'm guessing it's a newbie battle. Kind of curious how this was set up -- I agree that there are names here that I'm surprised to see require a play-in. Some of them are underperformers, but, like, Bloodsport is always solid.

Traves T. is also a newbie bot, but has fought a few fights during the Destruct-a-thon show. Where Ufwoe hasn't fought anything and will be a completely new bot from a rookie team (not sure who). Also think it's probably safe to assume that these fights are more for the unknown bots than the known teams. Nothing on the Faceoffs announcements says anything about winning to get in Championship VIII. 3 out of the 4 Faceoffs posted here so far have 3 well known teams vs a team that isn't well known. So it's likely a way for the unknown bots to show they belong.

Yeah, if they're not play-ins and just exhibitions, that makes more sense. The veterans are a pretty good roster of known but not undefeatable.

What on Earth is going on with Warthog? Is it a drum spinner? A giant wheel?

I mean, I assume they'll be taking the results into account for the newbies/weaker bots when making the field, but a lot of the established bots are probably just teams who were down to do some exhibition fights.

I used to love Battlebots as a little kid, like the early seasons, got the toys you could build. like the old vintage Backlash and Deadblow metal ones which apparently I shouldve saved so I could sell them on ebay in 2024. Loved Toro. I've kind of been catching up to some of the later seasons available on Discovery, and am I right in thinking that eventually people kind of figured out an optimal battle bot model and there stopped being more of the goofy ones? I don't even see a lot of pure "send them to the sky" flippers like Toro. I guess there's goofy stuff like Huge that I see, but watching a lot of these more recent seasons I'm disappointed by the fact it just seems like there's 7 more or less similar wedges with saws on them often just competing against each other. That's why it's almost refreshing when that one that's just like a mobile gun with those twin lawyers shows up, even if it doesn't really seem like something that ever wins. With that said though, drat that one tournament where Hypershock just tore through robot after robot with super fast knock outs was loving awesome.

Loved Toro. As far as flippers go, Bronco and Hydra both showed up in the discovery seasons and did fairly well, and Blip is pretty good as a new bot Vertical bar spinners are definitely on-meta right now, but I think a big part of that perception for the discovery season is Bite Force being incredibly good as a robot. It has an almost perfect record, only losing once, against Awakened Chomp. They're definitely talking about rules tweaks to make the forks/wedglet four wheels vertical spinner a little less effective. One thing is adding some 'gopher holes' and a less perfectly flat arena to make forks more of a liability Tunicate fucked around with this message at 20:14 on Oct 3, 2024 |

There is a meta you can see appear, but there're also a lot of very effective robots you could easily bet on taking the win who won't fall into the "wide base vertical spinner" category. Hypershock succeeds through driving and tenacity as much as through having a vertical spinner, and Whiplash only has a spinner for style points when you compare it to something like Biteforce. There is a lot of tech progression under the hood, and a lot of new or revisited design concepts (Blip and Hydra mentioned as flippers but way more powerful than old systems). Blip team also makes a robot that punches, and both are designs around component miniaturization, which also gives a robot like Copperhead robustness. Tombstone is a tried and true, brutal industrial design from a prior era and while it'll look the same, it is apparently currently undergoing modernization with 3D printed rubberized fire-reducing internals. Meanwhile, Sawblaze looks like an evolution of Comedy Central designs (angry dust pan) but with next-level efficiency from armor to drive to positioning and weapon strikes. Similarly, Huge just looks silly but gets very deadly as it evolves. Oh and Claw Viper is also a loving terror now despite being a control bot. There are some good bitey designs for that matter.

The vertical spinner meta has gotten pretty overwhelming, but they also deliver the destruction, so it's hard to complain too much. Also people have gotten a lot of success with anti-verts like Sawblaze and Huge, so it's not "optimal" in that it's unbeatable.

I don’t remember what the robot was called but it was super fast and had the control arm. I could see super fast robots being a thing for just how much control you have.
