From my understanding, they work well as long as no one is actively looking for your phone. I suspect that something leaks out of the faraday bags that is traceable. I suppose that someone here knows for sure, but that would likely require divulging some rather spicy information. I'm shocked that someone would actually bring their personal phone with them on a "mission" like this. If phones were needed, I would be using burners bought with cash.

I bet they don't even have some kind of proactive monitoring, they probably found out the system was down from someone downstream trying to access it.

With no plan this poo poo would have been down for days while they tried to find the one guy who coded it and retired 5 years ago. 3 hours isn't bad, but why not have a hot standby for what can be considered one of the most critical systems in the nation? I've seen this many, many times with federal systems. System needs to be up 100% of the time, should we have a backup? No. Should we monitoring the service/system proactively? Nah, that sounds like work. My entire job revolves around trying to beat these concepts into the skulls of federal system owners. It is a losing battle.

Granted, I'm moderately surprised the outage was just a few hours, but ASAPI's right in that such a hugely important system should have a failsafe. Or maybe this *was* the failsafe and it just takes that long! I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. Much of my job revolves around setting up SLAs and DR plans; the requirements for, say application availability, that are mandated from congress/federal gov are often laughably low. Just the other day I was working with a group that provides medical care, their RTO for a patient facing system was measured in weeks even though the system is (allegedly) "Mission Critical". The disconnect/disfunction between the worker bees, their bosses, and the IT systems is amazing. After being in this position for a few years now, I am shocked the stimulus checks even arrived. fknlo posted:Once again, the notam system went out last night at like 7pm or so central time. Everything I found was saying 0600 eastern as the outage start, unless that was the backup failing as well.... But also agree, something happened. For the same system to go down in a different country within 24 hours of us, would be rather low on the probability scale. Now I am wondering if there is an issue with the code and/or OS. Similar systems in different areas (I hope these systems are separate and have their own hosting, security, backups, etc) don't tend to go down at the same time unless the issue is either a bad actor or a systemic flaw with the application and/or OS/hardware. Maybe this system requires some archaic hardware to function and some of the physical components finally died. I could imagine both the US and Canada using the same vendor to set up these systems.

CRUSTY MINGE posted:So when is the debt ceiling default poo poo going to start hitting military pay and veterans disability? I'm curious about this as well. At work (Federal contractor for the VA) no one is freaking out, but we also got a bunch of funding before the elections, so I assume that is why. I was under the assumption that if the debt ceiling isn't increased (much like budgets being approved and/or CRs being passed) the Federal gov shuts down. This would effect pay if it falls during one of those processing periods when the "checks are cut". Something else I've noticed is this debt ceiling is a moving target, I saw a bunch of posts/talk about us hitting it yesterday. Now, today, they are saying the same thing. The lack of people saying the sky is falling at work is telling me that the CRs, assuming they don't time out, are going to keep some of the Federal gov open during this. Anyone who can dumb this down for us would be appreciated, I must be missing something important.

That makes sense. Last time there was an impending shut down my inbox was flooded, we were also waiting on funding in that CR to continue. This time... just crickets... Is it possible that if an area is already "funded" the money is sitting in a different account/pool/place that the debt ceiling won't effect? Is the money from a CR effectively "in escrow" (for lack of better terms)?

Since it wasn't just me that was having issues with the debt ceiling I found an article: https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/19/politics/debt-ceiling-deadline-treasury/index.html We hit the ceiling today, but will use "extraordinary measures" to keep us afloat until June 5th. quote:Treasury will start using two extraordinary measures to allow it to temporarily continue financing the federal government’s operations, Yellen wrote on Thursday. They are mainly behind-the-scenes accounting maneuvers. I get that they are going to rob money from retirement funds (screw you Post Office, Military with the TSP [everyone now, right?], and Civil Service people) and likely cook the books some like a wall street banker. Why does it "expire"? They can only rob those accounts for X days? I would think they would use a different term if they simply drain the accounts, or am I still a moron?

Slowly, they are starting to keep to themselves, taking down their banners/signs/decals/flags, and generally staying out of things. I'm not sure if they are changing their ways or if they are learning that they will be called out for their dog whistles.

I'm always confused about the timing of the release of body cam footage, especially when we know it will be as bad as this Memphis footage will be. It is safe to assume that there will be protests (and likely some unrest as well) because of the footage. Why wait until the maximum number of people are available to congregate for the release? It is a freaking Friday night, people will be off work, not have to get up the next day, etc. It's like they choose the absolute worse time to release these things. Timing the release for a Friday afternoon/evening almost guarantees there will be more participants for any/all demonstrations for that evening/night/next day. Are they just trying to keep the downtown office workers away from demonstrators?
