So I went out and bought some interior bits for my Buick today, and the guy I was buying them from also offered the S10 frame and running gear from under the one he had there. Which would come with a motor, suspension, rear end, etc.... for like $800.
...
I mean, I basically want an older car that I can drive on regular basis. Something that will look cool and not require a bunch of fiddling with hard to get parts I suppose.
Given the general weather conditions in the PNW, more braking power and better handling would probably be in my best interests.
:getin: That's going to be great. Please start a thread when you begin work and link it in here. Frame swap to modern is the way to go if you want easy parts availability and near daily drive-ability.

I know I've posted this a few times in AI but the Rav4 EV had a range extender trailer - http://www.evnut.com/rav_longranger.htm

quote:

The Long Ranger was an AC Propulsion project (commissioned by Toyota) to build a generator trailer that would allow liquid-fueled high-speed travel in the Rav4EV. There were many obstacles to this project seeing the light of day - most of them bureaucratic. For most practical purposes, the project was a great success that never really saw the light of day before the Rav4EV program was terminated. A 500cc motorcycle engine is used, housed in a small, aerodynamic package. ~20kW DC output is sufficient for extended high-speed travel. The micro trailer incorporates intelligent "BackTracker" steering which automatically maintains trailer-to-vehicle alignment during backing to avoid jack-knifing. There is little question that this 350 pound trailer functioned as planned - sustaining freeways speeds for as long as the 9.5 gallon tank had gasoline. Amazingly, even with all the conversion losses added up, the gas mileage of this combo is comparable or BETTER than the pure gasoline version of the same vehicle.

If you're doing a lot of filling stuff grab the 5+ gallon "racing" fuel jugs and a hose adapter. If you're doing a real lot of filling grab an electric transfer pump like this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F3Z4VSK. I have to use that to fill the 7 because the fill neck angle is too sharp for the nozzle at the pump to push the flap open and it sloshes back on the slowest setting.

There is precedent here. Last time I had a big episode, I drove a few hundred miles each way in a blizzard and spent most of my savings to buy a clapped out, red X1/9 that left me stranded deep in Wisconsin half an hour after purchase and was a mechanical nightmare/money pit

The real rig costs $550, without a seat. It does go on sale and I think it is on sale right now. I think overall I'll get out of this for under $300. Raw steel was $160, laser cut steel is up to $70. Aluminum and bolts was $60. Some leveling feet were $10. So it's $300 right now lol.
