I'd be interested in seeing this as well. The claim sounds pretty dubious to me, especially considering how the GOP's anti-trans playbook worked out in the midterms. And even if it is true, the Dems refusing to actively defend trans people because it would cost them votes would be pretty craven.

Whelp, looks like a major (~ 180k barrels/day) oil project on the North Slope is getting approved. This is very bad for the environment locally as well as further cementing how much of a joke our climate policy is. The native community is split it sounds like. Some beautiful patterned ground in that pic.

Just FYI: The tweet author has incorrect info in his posts.

The article doesn't say it is approved. It said they recommended that part of the project be allowed to go forward, but not until they perform an environmental impact study. The same recommendation also says that they should approve an alternative plan and not the original submitted by the Alaska Native tribe's drilling company.

quote:

ConocoPhillips Alaska had proposed five drilling sites as part of its Willow project, and the approach listed as the preferred alternative by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in the report calls for up to three drill sites initially. Even as the land agency released its report, the U.S. Interior Department said in a separate statement that it has “substantial concerns” about the project and the report’s preferred alternative, “including direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and impacts to wildlife and Alaska Native subsistence.”

The Bureau of Land Management, which falls under the Interior Department, also said in the report that identifying a preferred alternative “does not constitute a commitment or decision” and notes it could select a different alternative in the final decision.

quote:

The members of Alaska’s congressional delegation — Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan and Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat — all said they welcomed Wednesday’s environmental review and urged the administration to allow the project to move forward.

The actual decision is coming around early March:

quote:

U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who fought the Willow project as a member of Congress, has the final decision on whether to approve it, although top White House climate officials are likely to be involved. Haaland has multiple options, including outright approval or rejection or a middle ground that allows some drilling but blocks other development. A final decision is expected no sooner than early March.

Federal agencies have within the last week made two major decisions around resources in Alaska. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it was reinstating restrictions on road-building and logging on the country’s largest national forest in southeast Alaska, the Tongass National Forest.

And on Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it was exercising its so-called veto authority under the federal Clean Water Act to block plans for a proposed copper and gold mine in a mineral-rich area of southwest Alaska because of concerns about its environmental impact on a rich Alaska aquatic ecosystem that supports the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.

If it is from a random twitter account or the article is paywalled, then try to post the whole thing or summary excerpts below the tweet.

Yeah. McCarthy was originally going to just kick her off. But, Jeffries appointed her anyway and refused to name a different candidate.

That forced a full House vote and two Republicans had previously said they opposed kicking people off committees for ideological reasons - Nancy Mace and David Joyce.

Mace ended up voting "Yes" anyway and Joyce voted "Present" instead of "No."

They have the United States Comptroller testifying.

It's going about as you would have expected.

Not clear what the U.S. Comptroller's office has to do with a local drag story hour.

https://twitter.com/Acyn/status/1620875576079949824

The next major hearing is February 9th and it is the first hearing for the new "House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government from 2021 to 2023."

They will be hearing from Viola Garcia from the National School Boards Association and Jennifer Moore from the Human Resources Department at the FBI on "the Department of Justice's program to target concerned parents exercising their rights as domestic terrorists during 2021."

This hearing is wild.

Basically nobody has asked the Comptroller any questions about his actual job and they are up to minute 46.

Even the Dems are just kind of apologizing to him and not asking many questions.

Edit: One Dem has asked him about the office's report on 12 proposals for more efficiency in the government that they released. That is basically the first actual policy question.

What?

The author is arguing that publishing so many articles about the subject must mean the NYT thinks it is a bad thing and asserts that they did not cover it. They very clearly did. They published many front page and opinion articles about it.

I think you can make a good argument for what he is trying to claim, but the NYT covered Accutane a huge amount when there was legislation and movement on the issue. They are covering the trans bills because there is significant legislation involving them. The fact that they are covering something when it happens is not indicative of anything and the original claim he made to prove his point was just not correct. There's tons of good areas to criticize the NYT's coverage of issues, but the idea that they are printing a lot of stories about it must mean they are on the level of "Der Sturmer" as the OP said is not really a good argument.

As the authors article has pointed out, the NYT has spent less time on Accutane in the last 4 decades than it has on trans issues in the last year.

His point is made.

What are you going on about there, and why don't you address the main thesis of the article about transgender scaremongering from a major newspaper?

The language of "denounces" and "opposes" makes it nonbinding, there is no rigorous definition of advocating socialism or penalties specified for doing so. If they wanted to make actually illegal to advocate socialism, it would be written totally differently. It would also be a blatant First Amendment violation, so the risk of this happening is pretty low, especially when they only control the House
