Yeah Penix chose to come back next year. Guess he must not have liked what he heard about his draft chances. #8 to finish the year is way, way above what I anticipated going into the season, and I hope we can find a way to improve on that next year.

In 'also receiving votes' news remember a couple of months ago when North Carolina was flirting with a top 10 ranking and then they ran into the buzzsaw that is Georgia Tech and it completely ruined their season? North Carolina State too I guess, who actually did get a top 10 ranking at one point this season before losing to just about everyone except North Carolina for the rest of the year. Wake Forest top 10 at one point too relatively late in the season and didn't even make the receiving votes part of things. The ACC was kinda a bunch of crabs in a bucket for the middle of the conference this year it seems.

I think a decent bowl win used to be a nice cherry on top for a decent season for a lot of P5 programs, but nowadays basically every team is near-certain to be down 5 starters and maybe half the coaching staff on gameday, so I think win or lose most fanbases are going to recognize the game as low-quality and low-value, unless a bowl is a once-per-decade occurrence for your program.

I know ESPN and the leagues are pushing the playoff as the be-all end-all but FBS is not a 32 team pro league, there's more than 120 teams and nearly all of then will never have anything to do with the playoffs, there needs to be some other thing they can do to be successful at the end if the year or they might as well just have a 20 team superleague.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with fans getting excited to see their team play one last game and maybe go out on a high note. The games are ultimately for the fans and players. I just don’t think the results are at all meaningful for determining which team (or, god forbid, conference) was better during the season and using bowl games to argue over whether you should be ranked 6th or 7th in a meaningless postseason poll made by people who don’t even watch football seems very silly to me. It’s like bragging about winning an exhibition match.
