Well she had no idea he went on a killing spree and stopped them from performing a medical procedure that may have given immunity to the rest of humanity, and he also lied about her not being a source of a cure. She had no choice in living or dying for a possible cure. He used his own loss of his daughter to justify saving her.

She got betrayed by someone she fully trusted, and she’s processing her guilt through anger.

It's not about Joel killing people, it's about Joel stopping her from potentially curing all of humanity, by saving her against her will. This suspicion is why her anger towards him manifests as being directed at his overprotectiveness, "I don't need you to look out for me", etc.

He maybe should have said they were gonna kill her or at least decide if she wants to die for everyone. I can't remember if they told her or not.

Yeah one of the things this season premiere hammered home was how little agency Ellie is given, from the opening fight where the dude pulled his punches to Joel decking the bigot before Ellie had the chance to herself. And it’s clearly something she absolutely resents, especially if she does know what really went down with the Fireflies.

Joel lied to her, and not just lied to her but swore a lie to her. If he had just said "They were going to take your brain out and I stopped them and had to shoot our way out," it'd probably be a lot different.

Ellie acts more like a 12 year old than a 19 year old. The ones that are proclaiming "I'm an ADULT I do what I want" the loudest are always the most immature.

I get agitated when people do dumb stuff during the various zombie apocalypses, so last night's episode was pushing my buttons!

More so the people covering for Ellie - stick her on gate patrol if she can't take anything seriously. Or peel potatoes or something. Are they all that afraid of Joel?

Speaking of, have I missed some backstory about Joel, why he's such a super killing machine? Special forces or something?

It's not really clear in the start of S1 if it's Joel or Tommy that was the veteran.

In the S2 E1 episode, Joel says Tommy joined the Army, so he's definitely a veteran. I've assumed Joel was too, but nothing said about it I think.

I got the impression that Joel went stone cold after his daughter died and picked it up. Those guys in the pilot also seemed pretty scared of Tess, and they had her held captive.

Blending in like it ain't no thang
Joel and Tommy survived some of the harshest early stuff after society fell apart including a trek from Texas up to the Northeast US. Over that time Joel carried out some really dark stuff, and this is the reason Tommy ultimately chooses to cut off from him when he discovers Jackson in S1. It's implied that Joel was just hardened by the experiences he had over those 20 years.

Yeah Ellie and Dina were really frustrating at the zombie store. drat kids.

Also maybe they should talk about her immunity sometime, just because she's apparently immune doesn't mean she's immune forever, from all attacks, or that she can't still spread it.

Was it Tess who told her that her immunity won’t save her from getting torn apart?

Seems like if some tendrils in some roots in a water main are broadcasting, maybe they are also saying like hey special unit #25039 encountered medium ID x0xfgdxix again and went offline, send an extra 200 drones to this area to reduce our attrition rate.

If they were afraid of Joel they would have stuck her on gate duty or peeing potatoes. They keep putting her on patrols and poo poo because they can't say no to her for some reason.

It was the perfect introduction to the new season. We know the state of the commune, we know the state of Joel and Ellie's relationship, we were reminded of the fireflies, we got some action, and we know what the threats to them are.

Perfect!

I watched the Inside the Episode and the video game creator said that the guy who called Ellie a slur was just trying to protect the community in his own way, and I think I'm not going to watch any more of those.

Yeah I just don't know what the current stakes are other than "it might get crowded soon", or why I should be excited to tune in next week other than it looks like we're "doing a Walking Dead".

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and know the series is going to go places, I just thought the momentum for a premiere specifically was a bit lackluster.

I think Ella is a well written character with believable actions and motivations.

But she also drives me up a wall with how nonchalant she is with the whole "World ended due to these Fungus Zombies". That's my beef. But it makes for good drama. And that's intentionally who she is as a character - as shown in the flashback episode from Season 1 where she's a wiseass and always in trouble in Fedra High, and that's before she learns she's immune.

In a larger sense, all post-apocalypse stories hinge on a tension that exists between people who know what it was like Before, and those who don't.
