The mode does look fun, can't wait to make everything explode violently with my solar titan. I've also fallen back in love with The Parasite. It is an awful DPS option, but holy poo poo is it fun just to delete anything that is not a boss when it is fully charged.

Part of the problem with Lightfall and Beyond Light is that they were both hinted at in the seasonal lore beforehand as mysteries - the buildup in Season of the Seraph over Osiris looking for something, and the hints in Cayde's diaries over 'it's on Enceladus' and the references to deep stone crypt / long slow silence.

But when it came to the actual events of the DLC, instead of going there off our own backs and uncovering the thing, we just happened to be there when we stumbled on an unrelated situation, which demands we do something completely unrelated for someone else, and the thing sort of falls into our lap as an afterthought afterwards.

My favourite part of D1 was Venus, chasing down a rumour of weird stuff happening and exploring around the ruins of an ancient city to find hidden secrets. That's what Beyond Light should have been!

The campaign even kind of lampshades this by implying at the start of the first mission that our character and ghost have already been wandering round Europa for a bit but haven't found anything yet. We should have played that bit! Landing on Europa, exploring some ruins, soak up the atmosphere. It'd have been fun!

Maybe that's why Witch Queen worked so much better - Lost built up the capture and interrogation of Savathun and then we went chasing down her ship and the final boss fight was against her. Because we were given agency over our actions and were following a trail that made sense.

Everyone went nuts over Presage and what was that? Essentially 'here is a thing to explore, and you are exploring it because it's there to be explored.' Destiny is very good at doing that mystery and exploration stuff, and yet so much of it is just 'drop guardian onto location and tell guardian to involve self in conflict already happening.'

The Sleeper must awaken...with a damn fine can of Georgia coffee.
My brother's been slowing getting into Destiny and I took him through Shattered Throne last night (with Brother_Buer, thanks!) since he had the token for Wish-Ender. The second he killed something with the bow the sheer glee that erupted is the magic Destiny has. It's got good guns to kill things with.

I just want The Final Shape to have good guns to kill things with in interesting locations.

Honestly my biggest fear for Into the Light is that the Brave weapons won't be craftable.

the secondary one is with one or two Black Armory weapons seemingly being featured, is that Black Armory in general is going to get the shaft. The key art has the brave weapons with their own aesthetic, though it could just be a shader, it still might rule out seeing much more then one or two BA guns, and rule out doing more with the theming in the future. (Like how Seraph gave us Ikelos + new Warmind themed stuff)

I've never bought anything in the store. I like mass effect but honestly they kind of look like poo poo compared to the regular game outfits you already get by just getting items.

I barely ever remember to use emotes and I'm fine with the ones I have.

Into the Light looks like exactly what you’d expect from a free update to tide people over. I’ll be glad to have Blast Furnace back.

It’s crazy that “a second city survived the Collapse and went undiscovered until now where we discover that it became entirely sufficient on its own without the help of the Light” is actually a great setup for a story - maybe they have something we need to help defeat the Witness or get into the Traveler, I bet there’ll be tension between the Cloudstriders and the Guardians because they don’t need the Light and view our blessing as a crutch, I wonder how we can mix Neomuna tech and powers with our own to make something original - and literally none of that is explored in favor of Eight Strand Tutorials with Cringe McMasters

"Man is the animal that thinks something is wrong."
The idea of two people and some turrets defending Neomuna from the Vex for centuries and then the Shadow Legion for any amount of time makes no sense.

Lightfall should have happened on Venus. Savathun dropped the Veil somewhere the Vex would find it to hide it from the Witness but there weren’t Vex on Neptune yet. There were Vex and Ishtar Collective folks on Venus already.

How cool would it have been to follow the Shadow Legion fleet to Venus where we find the decedents of the Ishtar Collective using Strand to survive against the Vex? Then we fight deeper and deeper into the planet against Vex and Shadow Legion forces to secure the Veil. The Vex would have been a credible impedance to the Shadow Legion which would be right on Earth’s doorstep instead of way out in the outer system.

They did fix the issue yesterday.

And in other news, someone created the website Bungie should have on their home page that shows updates without having to go to Twitter.

Whoa! You're gonna be a legend!
I did a circuit of the GMs this week with a couple friends, both for conqueror and the new sword, and got dangerously close to Enjoying Destiny again.

Psiops Cosmodrome was the worst one again but we had a great laugh over one specific Unstoppable Champion - at the very end of the initial escort section a bunch of champions spawn at the door to the next area and all but one of these champs, including other unstops, will leash and retreat back to the door if you retreat backwards towards the strike spawn. Bungie even knew people would do this because they put infinitely respawning wizards and knights high up on structures to take pot shots at you if you retreat instead of pushing forward once the escort is at the end of the route.

There was one unstoppable ogre, however, that didn't leash anywhere and once it's blood is up will happily hound you across the entire map. If you're not expecting it, and have been trained to not expect it from the three champs killed immediately preceding it this can really catch you out, which is how we ended up with 2/3 guardians getting obliterated in moments and myself running screaming and crying trying desperately to put a little distance between me and an angry ogre who would not stop chasing me for a half second so I could actually kill the loving thing.

The rest of the strike wasn't actually that notable or difficult with careful play and good well use but this'll stick in my brain for awhile because it's been a long time since Destiny has thrown a really funny bit of emergent gameplay at me to create a fun story.

currently training to kill God
Just read the Marathon talk over the last couple pages and the thing about Marathon that I don't think anyone is really discussing is that the extraction shooter space is incredibly ripe for innovation. Escape from Tarkov is the definitive extraction shooter and it's made by devs who fundamentally do not understand that they've created the single best shooting/ballistics model in the industry and insist on jamming up their primary game and arena game with things like "realism" and "the stupidest progression system that anyone could have implemented in a competitive arena shooter". They've made boatloads of money because the base gameplay loop is incredibly solid, there are insane highs and lows while playing and it can be insanely fun, but I don't have much confidence in their ability to craft a proper endgame or, frankly, to even release the game (it has been in "beta" for over 7 years lmao).

For years before Marathon was released me and my friends would talk about how great it would be if a AAA dev would get off their rear end and make a decent extraction shooter with actual support and an endgame that makes sense. I say endgame because, at its core, Tarkov is essentially an MMO-lite - there are character levels, skills, quests, items, gear, etc - but the devs haven't figured out how to make the MMO portion interesting, so they wipe the game and all your characters every 6 months. I wonder if there's a dev out there who, despite the odds, has supported an MMO-lite looter shooter that has really solid shooting mechanics and gameplay for a decade?

Maybe extraction shooters aren't your thing, of course that's fine. But I think it's reasonable to think that Bungie has the capability to make something very interesting in Marathon, for many reasons but also because I've been playing and loving Destiny for a looong time now.

The problem (and I say this as a huge Bungie fan who had played Destiny for its entire existence) is that Bungie also doesn’t seem to understand what makes people keep coming back to Destiny. They’ve been able to muddle through on a couple of really, really good core pillars- gunplay, art, map design, music, writing- but they may have finally lost the plot a little too much and now they’re scrambling for hold it together and also get Marathon out. They’ve done some genius work under insane pressure in the past, but a) no one should have to work under that level of management failure and b) it’s unclear how much of that culture and people remain

I don't think Bungie has really given anyone a reason to be hyped about Marathon, but I also don't feel like they WANT anyone hyped about it yet?? Like they clearly don't want people to think D2 is winding down or going to receive less of their attention.

That cgi clip they showed last year felt like it was designed at gunpoint. I gotta imagine that if it were up to Bungie, marathon would still be Unannounced

THE LIAR
Yeah the thing about it that just gives me a weird vibe on the whole situation is that they went "Hey, remember Marathon? That good ol' single player FPS we made 30 years ago! Well it's back! In PvP-only extraction shooter form!"

It feels like a mad lib. And the whole "No we don't have any gameplay footage and now, don't expect any information about it for like two more years, byyyyyeeeeee." makes it feel even weirder.

The Marathon trailer was the answer to that question, even if Bungie says it's not.

It doesn't really matter if Marathon started off as a good idea, I don't have the faith in Bungie to make it good, especially if it's now a hero-based shooter and all that lol

If it comes out and is mediocre as people suspect it will be it's just going to confirm what the community suspected (milking D2 to fund Marathon and neglect D2) and I don't think that's a good thing, personally. But execs get to take their bonuses for shipping it I guess.
