On of my favorite bits in KoDP is when your clan's ghostly ancestors bust in and start hollering at everyone for being huge disappointments. It's only surpassed by the similar event where they are specifically pissed off at your one ring member who constantly speaks in vague proverbs, and demand that he shut the gently caress up :allears:

A lot of these were lifted specifically from the icelander sagas, Eyrbyggjasaga in particular. I encourage folks to read my resumes of it, as it has both a feud started over making GBS threads on a sacred rock, ghostly seals being clubbed and the several hilarious hauntings that was adapted for KoDP.

Flashback, 1619, the year of your initation

The initiation is over, and you have, as Ernalda-Nandan, made many pacts with many gods and goddesses, carrying their gifts with you to the land of the living, feeling your five souls shining with in you - even your fifth, spreading warmth and life, radiating out from a womb you're reasonably certain you didn't actually possess before. Crawling out of the Goddess-Lodge, somehow appearing in it even though you started your initiation in the Five Pits of Men, you are drenched in sweat and other, stranger scents. The night is still young, and the many stars of the sky shine upon you. The Bull and Horse constellations shine brighter than they ever have before, you think, a powerful omen, but one which significance you don't have the training to appreciate yet.

The wisewomen of your tribe look upon you approvingly, and you have confidence that you are now a grown Nandan. Even before you can properly explain the way Lankhor Mhy raised your eyes to the rivers of heaven, one of the women who initiated to the Knowing God years ago notice the 'touch' of the Truth and Stasis runes on your soul, and asks you calmly if you should go to the library in Jonstown next year. You nod. The call of a God to serve is not easily denied, and you wouldn't want either, to for that matter. The cold hand of Flesh Man, the first person to die ever, has also held you, and you know that you are closer to the ancestors than other people.

(( Current Cult Status: Nandan, Initiate. Lankhor Mhy, Initiate. Current Rune Status: Truth 75%, Illusion 25% and Stasis 75%, Mobility 25%. You also receive a positive modifier to Spirit Combat, and slightly better relations with the Daka Fal / Flesh-Man cult. ))

Occupation

Your confidence only grew from that day, having the full support of your family and clan behind you as a grown Nandan, you started training to become a..

A) Philosopher. Determined to understand the inner workings of the cosmos, you apprenticed to the sage Orlmorg the Powerful outside of Jonstown. Branded a renegade by the God-talkers for his exotic ideas, he nevertheless gave you a new perspective of a world ruled not by gods, but by logic and mastery of the mind itself. Philosophers can cast Sorcery spells, a unique but socially ostracized form of magic. (Ed - It should be noted that learning Sorcery precludes us from ever advancing in the cult of Nandan and Ernalda, which might not be ideal for a sartarite sage-type character.)

B) Scribe. Utilizing the teachings you received in Jonstowns Temple-Library, you become a skilled scribe, and immediately started earning your keep doing writing jobs for both the civic leadership and the Knowledge Temple itself. You also ply the library rolls, either on your own behalf or in return for payment as you help knowledge-seekers get what they want. Scribes aren't very well-versed in skills of physical labour like most other professions, but know how to read and write, use libraries and be part of the coordinating class.

C) God-Talker. Deciding to further your commitment to the gods you met during your initiation, you became a priest of Nandan or Lankhor Mhy in the great city of Jonstown. Depending on the god, this may yield Rune Magic that helps with health and crafts, or wisdom and knowledge. Priests are highly respected specialists, who not only further the will of their temple, but also grant temporal power and influence in local politics.

D) Crafter. Following the example of Nandan, you became a skilled weaver and potter, making linens, cloths and containers that are already the talk of both your clan and tribe. Crafters are used to physical labour, and may be quite streetwise or clan-savvy. You gain skill bonuses related to bargaining, evalutating/haggling, and understanding other people.

E) Entertainer. Touched by Ernalda and Nandan, it is culturally appropriate that you should become a dancer and player of songs. You apprenticed to Harbord the Fair, a Donandar initiate whose stories and good voice are well-reknowned around the tribe. You dance beautifully, and your skills with both lyre and flute are improving. You use the lores learned at the library to increase the interest you command.

I got to be honest guys, I'm not liking the odds of slaying the crimson bat with our mighty axe with this character so far.

I think we will need to find a more magical path to honoring our grandmother's badassery and avenging our father's tragedy.

It's better to ask our good old scribe-god for more wisdom as we walk the path of god-bothering towards greatness.
Voting C, Lhankor Mhy god-talker with a focus on wisdom rune magic, perhaps.

I mean, okay yes. But also one day you start wondering if you really need boats to go on water to move you quickly, or if you can't just switch two kinda sorta identical goddesses out with each other without consequences for their cults, and before you know it you're injecting Malkionism into your pipe every day and the entire cosmos decides to eat you. It's not all fun and games.

While on the voting break, I will divulge that our combat prospects aren't alltogether bad. The characters manipulation/weapon skill category modifier is +15 because of high POW, AGI and SIZ, which is a flat +15 to ALL kinds of weapon and shield rolls, including but not limited to: javelins, bows, thrown headbutts, axes, spears and lances, and that's before we add profession, culture and freebie increases!

Still, she probably isn't going to kick the bats rear end in single combat without initiating into a more martial cult..

I'm not sure what you mean by monotonic ("not decreasing" according to my dictionary?), but time is.. uh, hinky. Sure, events from 0 to 1625 (where our game starts) have been largely linear and subject to historical record. However, this is only the current age. At the end of the Lightbringers Quest, the gods entered what is known as the Great Compromise, bringing Time (a young god, born of chaos) into the world. This had several major effects, most notablye:

A) Making the world stagnant, instead of non-existing.
B) Fossilizing every single god and god-like entity into the matrix of the cosmos, binding them only to have the powers, stories and agency offered to them before the Compromise. This is why you literally have to enter the god-time if you want to have a new god to worship, they're stuck there.
C) Binding their stories to affect the current physical laws in Glorantha. Gods that were dead in the God-time, have to stay dead half of the time (therefore, Yelm, the literal sun, only 'lives' in Glorantha during the day, dying and entering the underworld at night - and the energies entered the flow of time, making fire deities strong in the summer, but weak in the winter).

So the God-Time is extremely real, but it doesn't follow linear time outside where it was bound into it. Does that make sense?

(( Have some light background reading while you wait for the next update! ))

Orlenda Bronze-Back Jarstavalsdaughter, God-Talker of Lhankor Mhy

What a long, strange trip it’s already been, you muse in 1625. After initiation, you commenced rearing animals, weaving baskets and knowing the ways of Nandan to keep your family fed and clothed, but there was no denying that you had to go to the Lhankor Mhy temple upon finishing the major household projects of 1619.

When you arrived, the chief of loremasters herself, Jorjera Latish, had divined your coming. Though you had been warned that she is the most consummate of political schemers and might lie, she too had seen the “Bull-Horse Ride” on the day of your initiation! Breaking down the basics of astrology for you, she explained how the ‘dancing bolts’ following the starfire of Bull and Horse had determined the cardinal direction a new worshipper would arrive from, as well as the relative strength of your destiny by the area of the sky it had happened in. Enraptured, you began your training.

Becoming a trusted helper and capable scribe in Jonstown, you eventually joined Latish as an emissary to the great empire of Esrolia! Here, you learned much of the sensual, powerful cult of Ernalda, and the tug of Nandans worship reignited in you, but was much at odds with your commitment to the knowing god. You felt as if this conflict would one day arise in your life, but as of yet it hasn’t happened. You never go to wonder much about that particular issue, as war had already broken out by then.

The years from 22 through 24 was a great tempering of the soul. Resolutely taking up arms in defense of your cult, you fought as a caravan auxillary during the Esrolian civil war, when the pro-Lunar queen was overthrown in a coup d’etat and you had to protect columns of Lhankorite pilgrims and fleeing civilians. When Nochet itself was besieged by the Lunar armies, and the Hendriking king Broyan protected the city, you fought holding actions where the walls were broken, healing the injured and dispelling the magic of their vile sorceror-soldiers, sometimes in the breach itself!

Then, in ‘24, the Boat Planet appeared in the sky, portenting great doom and change, and change came. Breaking the sailing ban that had closed the seas since ancient times, Harrek the Berserk and his Wolf Pirates arrived in Nochet, allying with Queen Samastina and Broyan to break the siege. Following your cult into Samastinas army, you followed them to Pennel Ford, and fought honorably at the great battle there when Orlanth was freed from the underworld, and his power re-flooded Dragon pass.

Unnerved by Harrek and his murderous plots, you instead followed a young Sartarite named Argrath to the border with Prax, sworn to aid him with magic in return for his soldiers protecting the temple quarter - and what glory you aided! He summoned a demi-god, Jaldon Goldentooth, who merged Argrath and the White Bull, son of Urox, and you saw Argrath White-Bull emerge from the smoke and glowing pits, acknowledging his new form.

Convinced that Argraths destiny is the one who will help heal the world during these tumultuous times, you helped him liberate the city of Pavis, reawakening that citys guardian god and drive out much of the chaos below the rubble.

Now you are returning to your home in Dragon Pass, with a renewed knowledge of the greater Hero Wars, and hope that your loyalty to the White Bull and Lhankor Mhy will see you safe in the terrible times ahead..

((So this is not news to people who already know Glorantha, but this is where our character fits into the established storyline via background rolls. It has net us the passions Honor (at the increased level, 70%) Devotion (Ernalda), Loyalty (The White Bull) and Loyalty (Lhankor Mhy temple, Jonstown), along with the Love (family), Hate (Lunars) and Loyalty to tribe and clan we already have.))

((Little late, had an adventure. With the flu.))

Returning home

The Dragonrise is complete. The hated Lunars must no doubt have taken a terrible loss when the dragon rose, and you long to visit a major Sartarite city to find out what is happening in the kingdom. For now, though, your return from Esrolia takes you first through your ancestral lands in the Colymar wilds, and you are only a day out from the Stream, where your clan, the Arnoring, dwells.

Balancing your pack on the good pony you’ve been provided by the Lhankorite temple in Nochet, you come across some herdsmen and identify yourself as Arnoring by birth. “Aye, I knew your father” one laments. Pressing them for news, they cheer up and happily inform you that the Arnoring have reclaimed their former revenue streams in Quackford and Sartar’s Bridge when the Lunar garrison fled. Seeing the bayberry tattoos on their necks and arms (the mark of an initiated Arnoring) truly warms you. This is home, whatever else may happen.

Your spirit buoyed by the good fortunes of your clan, and the proximity of your old friends and loved ones, you continue to the Three Fork Road. You pause momentarily, considering where you really want to go first..

A) .. Your mother and grandmother's stead. If Sena the Grey yet lives, sharing stories and drink will be the best day in a long time. Also, you have many family members to update on, particularly the learned ones like Yanina, who left home to become a philosopher, or Garmast Golden-Cup, who put in a fair bit of his newfound wealth into magical projects.

B) .. The Woadstone, site of clan leadership. There is no time to waste in discussing the latest movements of the wars with the Lunar Empire, nor of how you might strengthen your kin in the time to come. Darang Swordwielder ought still to be chief and storm voice, and he would do well to receive advice from you and other travelers.

C) .. The Lane, main thoroughfare of your clan. Visiting and gifting ring members and other elders is traditional, and may gain you other insights than heading directly for chief or family. Particular Orvar Odd-Eye, the chief shaman, is the man to see if you need spiritual aid.

Geared up

You absent-mindedly cradle your dear family heirloom, when thoughts of home arrive. When you initiated, you received..

1) ..A powerful weapon, the better with which to defend your family honor!

2) ..The revelation that you had a famous hero in your family tree, boosting your social capital.

3) ..A protective magical device, the better to brave dangers with.

4) ..A truly magical treasure, giving you the use of a spell you haven't learned.

(Double vote! One letter, one number! Voting closes on saturday 12.00 CET, but no promises for update as I will probably have even more flu by then. As always, all questions about the voting options, character or setting will be enthusiastically answered in the meantime)
