it's probably the best feature Logitech has

not all of their mice have it, and basically no other manufacturers have anything like it, except I think maybe razer (lol).

put that in free spin and just cruise through the shitposts :c00l:

at least on the OG mx master, the scroll wheel ratchet thing is a little clicky wheel that literally moves into place when you hit the button, you can feel it clunk when it moves. iirc it's attached to a little arm but it's been a few years since i poked around inside

idk how it works when you're just scrolling but i'm guessing past a certain torque they have it move out of place for free spin

the newer models might have some kind of piezo idk

they should make magnetic scroll wheels, so you can change the clickiness/strength/etc to your taste

i miss the mx revolution's programmable solenoid for changing between clicky and free-spin. you could bind it to a button, have it change based on app in focus, have it switch modes during spin based on rpm, etc... very nice. the g502 button is very enjoyable to click on and off, but its not as cool imo

my mouse has the clicky wheel for casual scrolling but if you scroll it fast, it auto-disables thru some kind of centrifugal clutch mechanism and lets you freewheel at high speed for professional scrolling

edit: it also has the disable button, and it feels like a soft touch button. i wonder if the whole thing is magnetic.
https://blog.bolt.io/logitech-mx-master-3-vs-2s/

quote:

To rapidly switch between detent mode and free mode in the wheel, the Logitech team engineered a fascinating little circuit that energizes a coil to do the work that was previously done by a large motor, cam, springs, swing-arm, and ball detent.

A quick 25V spike energizes the magnet, which sits still within the internal cavity of the wheel, causing it to pull on the little teeth as they pass, giving the user the illusion of a mechanical detent. Applying 25V in the opposite polarity de-energizes the magnet. The coil is unpowered except during polarity switches and the magnet retains its polarization, so the state remains even when power is shut off.

and weirdly enough I just saw an article recently describing how the whole thing works, but not that one

I'd still be using my Performance MX if the rubber coating hadn't gotten all funky. A while back Aliexpress had some replacement shells, and I missed the window to order one and have regretted it ever since.

I got an email from google titled "Your Android devices will soon join the Find My Device network" and after briefly being confused as to what the gently caress that means I guess google is finally launching the clone of the airtag system it's been working on

Pinterest Mom

legally distinct from the "Find My network"

mystes
May 31, 2006

I was actually confused by the name because "find my device" sounds like it should be for finding your android phones but I think the main point is that unless I opt out my phones will be scanning for other devices/tags. In typical google fashion it's worded pretty confusingly, either accidentally or more likely deliberately because they don't want people to opt out and I don't think I would have understood what it was saying if I didn't already know they were working on an airtag competitor.

quote:

You can use Find My Device today to locate devices when they’re connected to the internet. With the new Find My Device network, you’ll be able to locate your devices even if they’re offline. You can also find any compatible Fast Pair accessories when they’re disconnected from your device. This includes compatible earbuds and headphones, and trackers that you can attach to your wallet, keys, or bike.

To help you find your items when they’re offline, Find My Device will use the network of over a billion devices in the Android community and store your devices’ recent locations.

How it works

Devices in the network use Bluetooth to scan for nearby items. If other devices detect your items, they’ll securely send the locations where the items were detected to Find My Device. Your Android devices will do the same to help others find their offline items when detected nearby.

Your devices’ locations will be encrypted using the PIN, pattern, or password for your Android devices. They can only be seen by you and those you share your devices with in Find My Device. They will not be visible to Google or used for other purposes.

You’ll get a notification on your Android devices when this feature is turned on in 3 days. Until then, you can opt out of the network through Find My Device on the web. Your choice will apply to all Android devices linked to [email address]. After the feature is on, you can manage device participation anytime through Find My Device settings on the device.

That said I'm happy about it because as an android user it's sucked that I haven't been able to use airtags because they seem useful.

It's because there are only 4 bits you can use for extra buttons in the usb standard, anything past that has to be proprietary

kinda sorta but not really. you are describing HID Boot Protocol, which has a predefined packet format for keyboards and mice. this is also where nkro problems with crappy usb keyboards come from.

HID Boot Protocol hasn't been relevant for a long time now, as the name suggests this was a specialized sub-mode intended to be used by BIOS code back when USB was this new and scary thing. everything from UEFI firmware to, obviously, actual operating systems has supported full HID for decades, and HID itself allows devices to send input data using almost completely arbitrary packet formats. HID defines a complicated system of binary "report descriptors" and hierarchical and contextual "usage codes" that allow devices to self-describe an almost totally arbitrary packet format and the meanings of the values encoded therein respectively. there isn't really even such a thing as a "usb keyboard" or "usb mouse" as such, you can describe a device that has characteristics of both. like you could put a small selection of keyboard keys on a mouse for example, or you could add left click and right click buttons to a keyboard. at least in theory; in practice most multifunction input devices pretend to be a semi-separate standard keyboard and standard mouse due to Windows-specific jank.
