4-way intersections have been pissing me off lately

i was always taught that if multiple drivers arrive at the same time, *or a queue exists in multiple lanes* that the intersection enters a clockwise pattern until all the queues have cleared, and that the "who got there first" rule only applied to intersections with no queue

lately i see a lot of drivers treating it purely as "i got there before you, so i go before you"

it’s called priority to the right and no one knows how to apply it anymore, at least in north america

Shame Boy posted:

the thing you linked is specifically about four-way intersections that have no stop signs, which i've literally never encountered before but apparently exist??

i mean the same rule is also part of the rules on all-way stops but that's a different page apparently

they're quite common in europe, both on rural/country roads as well as in the middle of a city where two streets meet and no signage exists to otherwise say if anyone has to yield or one road is the "priority" road. stop signs are the exception and not the rule (at least where i am)

redoing my driver education moving from the us to europe was a trip, it's a lot more complicated with certain rules/situations here

the linked article mentions the rule is implied in the us as well, but a lot of intersections have been converted to all way stops for insurance/liability/dumb american driver purposes

I think perhaps the reason the US has chosen to install stop signs at so many intersections is that it's not clear on many local streets if one street is more major than the other and has priority or if it should be treated as an all way stop

if no sign explicitly designates one of the roads to be more “major” (in the us I guess this would be a sign that literally says “cars coming from the left and right have to yield to you” or something stupid), and/or if one of the streets doesn’t have stop or yield signs, the priority to the right rule is supposed to apply

making it a four way stop is just dumb and makes the flow of traffic less efficient, but that’s what’s been done in most of these intersections in America due to the inability of people to apply the priority to the right rule correctly

without a sign specifically saying this is a roundabout i don’t think this actually qualifies as one, just a hosed up intersection

in my neighborhood they started making these wee roundabouts by just plopping a center circle thing into an already small 4 way stop intersection. its still 4 way stop and i dont understand what a roundabout-like thing brings to the table

probably a traffic calming measure to force people to slow down, including the rear end in a top hat doing rolling stops

mystes posted:

I don't know whether it legally counts as a roundabout, but all directions have yield signs, so it seems like it is at least intended to be treated as one, at least probably? who knows

seems like it if everyone has a yield sign coming into the intersection

maybe there’s no roundabout sign because they’re so rare in North America no one even knows what they mean lol

in europe there are both yield signs and the roundabout signs together to make it explicitly clear what behavior is required

i recognize that my opinion here is an extreme one, but after watching enough episodes of "just rolled in", i don't think it should be legal for a layman to mess around with anything in the powertrain of their car. cosmetic is fine, if you want to plasti-dip everything pink go wild. but gently caress around with the safety critical components and then drive on public roads? hell no, you should either have to pay an exorbitant amount to have it done professionally AND then pass a government inspection... or if you want a faster car, you should just buy a faster car.

florida (and probably a few other terrible states) have completely abolished vehicle inspections entirely lol
