I haven’t followed any of the ups and downs for writers since the last strike (Hence the strike, I assume) so would you mind filling me in on where Netflix plays in this? I haven’t had an account in forever, but I guess they are not paying royalties to writers in the shows they license to stream? Is it something else?

Here are the basics, it's less about what Netflix specifically does, but what streaming does:

quote:

The existing contract between studios and the Writers Guild of America, which expires at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, sets minimum weekly pay for certain television writer-producers at $7,412. (Agents for experienced writers can negotiate that up.) One problem, according to the guild, involves the number of weeks writers work in the streaming era.

Because of streaming, the network norms of 22, 24 or even 26 episodes per season have mostly disappeared. Most streaming series are eight to 12 episodes long. As a result, the median writer-producer works nearly 40 weeks on a network show, according to guild data, but only 24 weeks on a streaming show, making it difficult to earn a stable paycheck.

Residuals have also been undercut by streaming. Before streaming, writers could receive residual payments whenever a show was resold — into syndication, for overseas airing, on DVD. But global streaming services like Netflix and Amazon have cut off those distribution arms.

Instead, streaming services pay a fixed residual. Writers say there is no way to know whether those fees are fair because services hide viewership data. A new contract, guild leaders have said, must include a formula for paying residuals based on views.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/30/business/media/hollywood-writers-strike.html

And meanwhile, most broadcast companies are saddled with debt, but still very profitable, so wall street is like BAD - I DON'T SEE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH. So there's been a strike needed for a while now.

I understand how shorter series means less stability for weekly pay, but wouldn't that be offset by the fact that there's a million shows that need writers? I get it, capitalism bad and strike for rights, but it seems like there are more episodes to write than ever?

There's also a rising trend of things called mini-rooms where studios hire a small handful of writers for maybe a month or two to smash out a rough draft, then fire everyone but the show runner who then finishes the script. Having to job hunt every two months isn't a secure way to make a living.

Didn't see this mentioned, but Sen. Ben Cardin from Maryland has said he will not be seeking re-election to the senate next year.

https://twitter.com/baltimoresun/status/1653070103745900545?cxt=HHwWgsC9qYig8fAtAAAA

Which puts things in a kind of odd place. Larry Hogan already said he wouldn't be seeking higher office, but that was before Cardin announced he was retiring.

Right now the rumor mill is that Jamie Raskin will potentially announce he's going to run to succeed Cardin, which would be great as Raskin has been pretty solid on most fronts.

The other thing is that once people catch on to what you're doing you might find it hard to find people willing to work for you. Super short-term thinking, but par for the course.

WA state governor Jay Inslee not going to seek fourth term. I thought he was doing a fine job, not perfect but competent & solid on environment. GOP ran a nobody in 2020 who got trounced, but I’m always worried a weak Dem and not obviously insane GOP candidate in a red year nationally could make WA the next Wisconsin, came awful close in 2004 by like 200 votes.

Having just given a big raise to teachers seems like an easy way to cruise to re-election, too. I'm surprised at his announcement.

Yeah, maybe because he’s 72? I was bummed his 2020 presidential primary went nowhere, he would have been good. Although if any WA politicians were to be president I’d want Patty Murray. Dang, just checked she’s also 72. Maybe Inslee leaving is intentional action by Dems to make room in prominent but pretty safe seats for the next generation? Lol, nah.

“We don’t really know where this goes — and I’m not sure we really care.”
Dems in WA just expanded their majority in the last election, I don't think we have to worry about the GOP taking over any time soon. There are no more "sane" republicans, only rabid culture warriors can win their primaries.

Just look at the WA republicans, do you really think they're going to have a "moderate" candidate in the next governor election?

If the GOP was going to take the seat it would be after Inslee's lock down mandates, even the new assault rifle ban isn't going to piss the chuds off as much as that.

I'm still a little salty about them shuttering all the State Parks during that period.

And they absolutely should not budge on this point, because as soon as possible, production companies will attempt to replace writers with AI, and in fact they're probably already trying to train AI bots to barf out scripts.

I don't understand half the terms, but holy lol @the AI part.
Writers ask for regulation preventing AI from cutting them out of their job. Get rejected. The counter-offer:
"An annual meeting to discuss advancements in technology"

Like, basically "not only are we going to gently caress you and use AI in the process, we're proposing an annual meeting to show you how much better we can use AI to gently caress you in the future"

Just loving reject the offer and make no counter-offer, you absolute ghouls, Jesus Christ.
