And a lot of “middle class” people are financing their $999 and $1999 full living room or master bedroom sets from Bob’s Discount Furniture or Raymour & Flanagan

the idea that $3500 can’t get you more than a pair of coffee tables or a small sofa is very “I only shop name brand”

People throw middle class around like it has a common meaning to people and that common meaning must include people making like $40k a year. If it is just an amazing product, I promise you there is an addressable market in the US at that price. I am far from convinced that it is so amazing that it justifies the cost but there are a shitload of people wearing $800 Apple Watch Ultras with $1100 iPhone Pros.

according to this the mean income in the US was nearly 100k in 2021 and the median was nearly 70k. that's a lot of millions of people that can afford it though.

i'm not defending the price, but it's clear there is a market for these high priced extravagances if you'd step back and look at the bigger picture

also, it's a first gen product. it's going to run like poo poo and be priced like poo poo. we can expect the 2nd gen to be cheaper and more accessible.
$70,784 is median household income

you need like $150,000 – $160,000 each year for a $500,000 mortgage.

childcare costs 18% of the median household income for a family with children under 6 in WA

So one thing I'm wondering is if the technology is there to create these mixed reality glasses that automagically compensate for myopia, so that Rx lenses or glasses/contact lenses aren't needed? I'm thinking about how when I get my eyes checked, I put my face on the thing and at first the image is blurry but then it measures some poo poo and adjusts some thing and bam I can see the image of the house in 20/20. Could future mixed reality headsets make use of this tech somehow so that I can just roll out of bed and put it on and viola?

It starts at 3500. So that means the price goes up. It isn't going to even come with a battery for 3500.

They are obviously going to come out with a non pro version, so I was watching it again to see what they could cut out to make it cheaper. The first thing to go is the front facing eyeball screen. Other than looking creepy, it serves no purpose. They could remove the audio and make it use headphones. The hand control cameras could go and they could sub in a mouse/keyboard/gamepad.

I think I am in the same boat as a lot of people. I don't mind what this device is, but nothing they showed me said it is something that is needed. They needed to come out swinging with games, apps, and real world uses. Nobody is going to wear this around the house while they do day to day stuff and they use it when a face time call hits. They will plan on a FaceTime call and put it on. The stuff walking around the house doing normal things just blew my mind. Who did they talk to that said they would do this?

i don't care if this thing is the greatest computing/gaming experience ever made. i cannot for the life of me understand how anyone would even pay $3.49 to embarrass themselves so badly wearing one.

not even going to get into the merits or demerits of the ar/vr. i am simply talking about the visual audacity of these. you can argue there're a lot of fashion items as bad or worse, but at least the wearer can argue artistic integrity or look or something. these do not allow you to do that. these are just violently out-of-place and seemingly useless on top of that.

i guess it is another object i might see in public that i can use to tell if someone is worthwhile.

When I say “middle class” and use the scare quotes, I mean “middle class” with the scare quotes, which is what the overwhelming majority of “middle class” people in this country are. It’s married school psychologists making a combined $115k annual income and struggling to save for their three kids’ college educations along with $60k in car loans, $100k in student debt, and a mortgage on a $450k house.

I’m not talking about the pair of DINK trust fund gays who clear $320k annual combined and share a car and can comfortably make all of the payments on their $200k two bedroom luxury condo with ease while still dropping $10k on a lavish Tuscan cruise vacation for Two every single year

The HomePod was a legitimate failure, at least when grading on a curve of Apple hardware is expected to perform. However, the HomePod was extremely late to the market compared to the Amazon Echo and has an objectively worse virtual assistant.

Vision Pro is also late to the party against Meta, but with a price tag 3.5x that of the Meta Quest Pro it's clearly in a different class hardware wise.

The thing with the iPhone, iPad, watch, and many other product launches is it was clear they were making the best in class product, and some scoffed at pricing.

This is being sold as “what if you did everything on a tv or computer happened on a headset” without offering any truly new or exciting experiences. They didn’t show anything no one was thinking of or anyone thought was impossible.

And maybe it’s just an immature launch because of Cook, but the software looks like a OSX hack or third party program.
