Phantom my Opera and call me South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut

Galaxy-Brain Sane Mafia: A CubicalSucrose Concoction is an experimental, SANITY-MECHANIC-HEAVY game designed for 17 players (& as many observers as Discord can handle) based off of inspiration from a recent obs-chat idea and a few hours of chatting with Iggy. Most of the positive refinement comes from Iggy, all of the remaining rough edges are from me.

This is the second game I’ve moderated, there’s a reasonable chance it just fails spectacularly, and thus it might be a bad idea for new players to join this one. But I’m not your supervisor!

There will be no fake flips, involuntary alignment changes, dramatic observer fuckery (though again I think unspoiled might be a better experience), no "hidden to everyone" win conditions, and I'm not requesting to be an IK. The only potential modkills this game should be lurker-related (he says, proverbially tempting the fates). I didn't do a full pass of other mod bastardry items so I'm probably (semi-intentionally) leaving a few things out just to keep the suspense up, but really the main gimmick is sanity.

Rule zero: If you ever encounter anything or anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable, threatened, abused, angry, or even unsure of how you feel, there are many people here, both within and outside of the SA Mafia community, who are happily willing to listen, provide support, and enact change to make the community better for everyone.
Here is a short list of only some of the people that other players have suggested as a resource that you should never hesitate to contact: Leperflesh and Antivehicular (probably the current Traditional Games Mods), VoodooFly, Hal Insandenza, Bifauxnen, Monathin, Wologar, Maerlyn, EccoRaven, CCKeane, Cloacamazing!, Opopanax, Sandwolf, Shellception, or whomever else you feel safer talking to!

Days will last 48ish hours, possible exceptions for weekends.
Nights will last 24ish hours.
Deadline will try to be at 21:00 UTC or 4 PM US Central to be a little more Euro-friendly.
If all night actions are in before deadline, there are no objections from any players, and the mod crew is agreeable, the next Day may start early with extra time allotted in.

A CUSTOM set of mafia rules apply:
- Don't be a jerk.
- Discord is necessary for this game. Please
JOIN THIS ONE.
- This is actually really important, don’t be a jerk.
- Don't edit your posts (unless otherwise indicated).
- Don't copy/paste mod comms (unless otherwise indicated).
- Post “sufficient content” in a hammer-time-adjusted game day or you'll get a lurker warning (unless otherwise indicated). This is at mod discretion, but I intend to be relatively lenient. Don’t just spam posts with single numbers to hit a post count requirement, that’s not (necessarily) useful content. Don’t try to game this by being an intentionally-lurky scum. A second lurker warning is likely a modkill (then why am I calling it a "warning?" Maybe it'll serve as a warning to other players?).
- If you need to sub out, earlier notice is better. If you think it’s not a great time for you to be playing, please don’t sign up.
- Don’t post anything with a ## except for a vote. THERE ARE NO DAY ACTIONS THAT REQUIRE A ##. Also try not to post anything even with a single #, since that gets confusing.
- Don't post after hammer (unless otherwise indicated).
- Don't post after you die (unless otherwise indicated).
- In order to actually sign up for this game, if you haven't played in a previous CubicalSucrose Concoction, you need to include something like “I actually read the rules and acknowledge this game is sanity-heavy” in your post. A quote of someone else saying they read the rules does NOT count! Preferably you’d read the entire OP, but I do actually want the game to run.
- Don't be a jerk.
- Flips may have flavor related to the theme, but will NOT reflect any game-related cause of elimination (though they may reflect other game-related characteristics).
- Finally, don't be a jerk.

Win Conditions (unless otherwise indicated):
Town wins when all threats to town have been eliminated.
Scum wins when they have unassailable control over the vote.

Day Eliminations:
- Will be based on PLURALITY voting.
- It is possible to vote for “No elimination” (this follows plurality rules)
- In the case of ties, everyone with the most votes on them will be eliminated (if there is a tie between at least one player and “No elimination” then the player[s] WILL be eliminated).

Previous Concoctions:

[Out of character mod notes] --- If at any point (especially after seeing D1 results) you want a replacement, please let me know and we'll get on that ASAP. No hard feelings, etc. Mafia is supposed to be fun, and what some people find fun others might not at all.

Additionally, this is not a game where voting "no elimination" is a broadly winning strategy. Wincons have been provided. (OP was long but I tried to be explicit about 'no "hidden to everyone" win conditions.')

Well, the people living in each of the four quadrants of Cubetown got together, brought their maps, brought their names and their neighbors' names. And realized that "Hey, that Illu fellow, anyone know them?" No one did. Their house was nestled basically in the center, but no one had ever seen anyone enter or leave.

Well, someone had killed the thread's sanity, that's for sure. And though there were no eyewitnesses, Cubetown had something better: Laywers and technicalities.

And so there were official communications and this and that, but...at the end of the day, nothing seemed to be resolved.

Years later, people would point towards the death of Sanity as the starting point for Cubetown's descent into madness. While several citizens attempted to reinstate order in their beautiful suburb, fights quickly broke out once night fell. And as the sun rose, so, to their great consternation, did the citizens. Along with their pets and furniture and pretty much everything that wasn't nailed to the floor. If there had been pigs in Cubetown, they would have flown on this day. Based on ##set and ##changeling actions, for the entire game, Illu investigated as a Normal-Aligned INSANE Alignment-Seer. Their role's flavor fake-claim was "Shermonk Clouseau."

It is now Day 6! Deadline in about 53 hours 4 PM Central Thursday.

Phantom my Opera and call me South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut

quote:

"And every rube down in Cubeville, the tall and the small, was waiting, without *any* voting or killing at all! The lack of sanity hadn't stopped the endgame from coming, it came! Somehow or other...it came just the same."
Galaxy-Sane Mafia has ended (with a whimper) in a victory for: Team Paranoid --- Sandwolf, Maugrim, Plastic, Shwinn, and Zoya!

Additional (unexpected) victories go to: Rhymes with Clue, Fool of Sound, and Neverhelm (and Illu who already won)!

And I really regret saying this:

CubicalSucrose posted:

Additionally, this is not a game where voting "no elimination" is a broadly winning strategy. Wincons have been provided. (OP was long but I tried to be explicit about 'no "hidden to everyone" win conditions.')

Remaining players were:
Maugrim & NeverHelm - Sanity Checkers
Plastic, RwC, and FoS - Alignment Checkers

What a wild ride! Thanks everyone for indulging me with Concoction #2. Hope it was some level of fun for at least most some of you! After my first game, I took a lot of feedback from many folks into consideration, but there was some really great feedback (specifically from wins) that was ignored, at my peril. (something like "Make sure that when things do go wrong it degrades gracefully into normal mafia.")

To address the question of "Is this Mafia?" - Maugrim a few months back (after I accidentally reinvented Survivor with a setup idea I had), suggested that mafia has "the concepts of town & scum, night kill, day vote." This (experimental) game skirted the edges of those a bit, for sure, but it had most of those. Though what actually played out D1 kicked it over an unfun line. Illu's role could have done something very similar D1. It was a bit risky, probably too risky.

As it was, I felt like the game was much closer to RimWorld 2 (and I cribbed the "experimental" word from that OP) in style, though some disagree. We'd setup spec'd (4 teams of 5) there. In Illu's recent 18-player game, I setup spec'd (6 teams of 3). This did (4 teams of 4) for real.

In any case, here are the main game design notes:

I'd been reading back through the Maf thread on SA and a lot of Ecco's most interesting/hated/loved roles involved some sort of sanity component. But, for reasonable reasons, I hadn't seen any "live" games with sanity considerations since playing again.

In Illu's spoiled-chat discord for Vaguely Strange Feeling, the vaguely strange concept of "Galaxy Brain Mafia" came up. It was very complicated as-discussed. However, it inspired me to come up with the concept for this game. "Build around a sanity-checker role."

I asked Iggy if they wanted to brainstorm with me and we got to chatting. I originally had "say it's sanity-related upfront, maybe fire and ice, have sanity-checkers with some BP to avoid curse-of-interesting-role." Iggy suggested CPR Doc as another sanity-ish-related role. Immediately threw out redirection from the setup.

Very quickly landed on four teams with the team names as the four sanities used.

After mocking up some roles, I landed on the (relatively) elegant (to me) structure of:
- Four teams of four
- Each team gets a Normal sanity-checker (later changed to 3 Normal, 1 Naive to ensure the alignment seers had one of each sanity)
- Each team gets an alignment-seer (one of each sanity)
- Each team gets a different killing role
- And then four unique roles to round things out.

I then added player 17, because four scum is the typical number for a 17-player game. I expected folks to setup spec a lot and they didn't disappoint, but was surprised at how quickly each team immediately jumped to "4 x 4." Keats was quickest.

A few other misc. notes:
- Roger Bannister was a callback to Stepford Wives. Illu's role was also a half-callback. I thought some of the fake Stepford roles were actually really interesting, so felt good about including them.
- "Watcher or Tracker" was a self-insert. Team Insane self-killing that role off (and not using the action N1!) made my job as a mod much easier. I wanted to include this as part of Keats' flip but it felt leaky - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ru8DMW-grY
- Trainee Ninja with the David Carradine hint was a phenomenal moment. That role's Stable Diffusion generated image was probably my favorite.
- The melting Rubik's Cube was something I made for a Photoshop thread a few years back - https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3942554&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=12
- Empathized with Somber's "It's rude when people come up with better ideas than you." from Hunters in the Garden, as the idea of "Each team has to eliminate exactly one other team" would've probably gone a lot better.
- Illu's role was something I was very concerned about after seeing chores in Egyptian Job. But it didn't really become relevant.
- The alignment checkers all had single-word role PM differences hinting at their sanities.

Also - Sand being replaced was 100% me misreading/misinterpreting a conversation. Big mod error!

---------------------

Huge huge thanks to Iggy (for initial brainstorming), Clo (for doing all the great flavor and helping correct many of my errors), and Shell for making a lot of the issues with the setup much more clear with their explanations.

As a final note, I hope everyone will always remember that "Three prawns are hardly a galaxy." - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sri91uVMoEg
