Golden needle with a Yorick was also super easy

I’ve been farming for gold stickers and it’s slow going. A couple here, a couple there, just slow rolling it

Got Jokerless (to fill out all the Challenges) and Completionist+ in the past 2 weeks and felt like a weight was lifted off of me.

Now going through Magic deck runs to start collecting gold stickers. Started with around 45, up to 95 or so at this point.

Looking forward to golding some of them (Erosion, Blueprint, Ramen and dreading a few others (Obelisk, Golden Ticket, Jolly)

I didn't realise a deactivated card actually counted for stickering until yesterday when I watched a balatro university vid. i kind of already knew it BC I had jokers deactivated by the boss blind get stickered before but I assumed the temporary ones didn't count for some reason

If you don't mind a little backseating, your Midas Mask appears to be polychrome but you put it on the far left side. I can't ID all your jokers but it could definitely have been placed to the right of the Misprint and added 1.5x mult to whatever mult misprint gave you on a hand. Since Midas Mask's effect happens at the card-played point it really only needs to be to the left of Vampire (and even then it could be to the right depending on the state of the cards you score with)

I hadn't considered how positioning affects the outcome, think I'm getting a little better at the game.
Edit: This combo seems a little ridiculous. After filling my deck with Aces from an earlier joker, I can spam the hell out of 4 of a kinds, basically just need to discard until I fill my hand with them. This particular hand netted 250K.

Get bashed, platonist!

You're experiencing the power of deck sculpting. Flower Pot is honestly not a very good joker, easily one of the worst xMult jokers. However, with a deck that's sculpted so you can consistently get high-value hands that synergize with your joker setup, even Flower Pot can be a powerhouse.

Well I gold staked every deck. For me I think I struggled the most with the Green deck in the end. I finished with black and was thinking it would be the hardest but I cleared it pretty quickly

My only gold stake win was on Green deck. I honestly just don't enjoy the stakes above purple (or whichever colour it was that increases the ante scaling for a second time).

Somehow I'd never realized that a red seal would fire when the card was activated by Raised Fist. It was quite a nice slow-blink moment when I got +10 Mult and then +10 Mult Again!.

Yeah once I've gold staked everything I am absolutely never playing anything above purple ever again.

Trying to grind out gold on plasma deck and it's just miserable how many solid runs end up falling apart over some dumb bullshit like an awkward rental destroying your economy or the inopportune timing of a perishable joker breaking.

Oh also perishable Cavendish is some extremely dumb bullshit.

One other thing with Raised Fist that might not be obvious: you can move the card to the left so it triggers before steel and Baron cards

Yes, it is tedious but when moving your kings and queens for Baron and Shoot the Moon so you get maximum scores for everything.

When I was first clearing gold stakes, I thought Black Deck was the hardest by far, but with additional experience I think Plasma Deck feels the worst to play.

Tangentially related, I have the skipless gold stake random seed records for 14/15 decks on Speedrun.com. Good loving luck for anyone who thinks they're beating this guy's run:

How often are people bouncing early on high stakes runs? I’m trying to grab my second gold with Anaglyph, which I’ve always found to be one of my better decks. But I’m losing by the third boss a lot. I don’t feel like I’m getting better; I feel like I’m brute forcing it till the right joker combo pops up early. I’ve gotten a few runs to the 6th or 7th boss and lost and those at least I kind of get how I lost, but a lot of the ones where I lose early feel inevitable. I just don’t get the jokers or just don’t get the cards.

Is that a normal experience at gold stakes?

Runs are usually make or break early, you either get some good joker pulls or you start building your economy. Building economy is usually more important than trying to get early jokers that will scale for late antes, you just need 1 or 2 that will get you thru rounds quickly so you can get the extra hand $ per to get your economy up.

There's going to be some of that until you get into obsessive levels of skill, but you can work the odds better than that. On a non-lovely deck being able to win 20-30% of seeds is a pretty reasonable goal for human beings to achieve. Keeping your options open (which mostly means stockpiling wads of cash) will help salvage a lot of runs if your original plans don't pan out.

tbf knowing when to take a rental and knowing when not to is probably the highest skill ceiling on gold stake. eternals and expirable (I always forget the term used for this) jokers are kind of intuitively easier. early good rentals can be run winning or losing and it's hard to come up with a good heuristic for it

yeah I'd agree with this. Almost done with my second completionist++ and "can I afford to take this rental" is the most I have to think in a given run at this point.

for orange/gold, you need +mult coming out of ante 1, and some econ to start building your engine by the end of ante 2 or 3.

a lot of the time the game gives you one or neither, and the blind skips can be deceptively enticing... but lol you just wasted a big blind on a free rare joker: enjoy your perishable obelisk on round 3.

This cosmic dance; bursting decadence and withheld permissions, twists all our arms collectively. But, if sweetness can win, and it can, then I'll still be here tomorrow to high-five you yesterday, my friend....Peace!
Times I have skipped in Balatro

1) Ante 1 when I would make more money than a 1 hand (Free shop counts)
2) $25 tag pops up in the first 2 antes
3) I want to gamble on trying to get a crazy early Poly Chrome or Rare Joker for fun in the first two ante and don't care if I need to reset
4) I have the joker that wants you to skip at least a couple antes
5) I have good jokers on a time limit and I want them to close out the boss ante
6) My run is so busted and I want to greed with more negative jokers for fun
7) Copy Tag deck pay offs once or twice a run.

Most of these prioritize fun gambles over optimal play cause yeah you need to build money and look for strong early jokers to actually progress in the high stakes or if you want to win consistently.

I only skip for the $25. Had a terrible orange stake run yesterday, got Burnt Joker and Riff raff after round 1, then lost on round 2 when I couldn't draw anything after discarding a straight. This is worse than when I got duplicated polychrome Trios (giving 20x mult) at the end of ante 2, then lost in ante 3 when I couldn't draw a single 3oak. If I start losing on round 1 then I stop playing because I'm obviously tilted.

yeah I'm on BD orange right now and have been stuck for a while and boy does it just sucks the fun out the game. I've had two good runs in a week of trying where I was one-shotting through Ante seven and then drew Violet Vessel for final boss and couldn't scrape up anything to reroll/disable and in one case ended up missing by a couple thousand chips which really hurt.

But in general a "good" high stakes black deck run is getting to Ante 5 and I hate it, a lot.

I hope the gameplay update buffs the free joker tags to guarantee no sticker. It would still be hard to justify taking one even without the chance for it to be actively detrimental.
