Ariong posted:What’s up with abstract being in everyone’s top ten? Have I been sleeping on it? My perception has been that it can get you to +15 really early, but you don’t really need that much that early, and by the time you do need the +15 you should probably have something better. So basically in my mind it’s in the same place as misprint and the cycle of jokers that give flat mult for the different hands. It gets you through ante 2. It's common, and pretty useful for the first four antes. It works in any build, so it shows up with high frequency. How do you get it to display the stakes on the jokers?

My latest Black Deck run (blue stake) got the Obelisk* in ante 1, which is frustrating because that's an extremely powerful rare but you need to feed it a ton of High Cards before it becomes usable. I managed to get Money Tree** and $100 by the end of Ante 3, so I was making at least $20 per round. Eventually I got Burglar for 3 extra hands, so I was able to dump a bunch of high cards into Obelisk during Ante 6 and then take it to the finish line. Obelisk is good at clearing Ante 8 but in my experience it's almost impossible to sustain it beyond that. *: Gains 0.2 multiplier per consecutive hand played without playing your most played hand. **: Max interest per round is $20 Phone posted:I haven’t played in a little bit, but Abstract being flat +mult is good, but I’m surprised that it’s making it all the way to the end of a run. I’m also surprised at Jupiter being heads and shoulders above other planet cards in some of the pics. I like Jupiter because the tarot cards make it easy to stack your deck with one of a particular suit. The jokers and spectres that let you duplicate a particular card are harder to come by. It doesn't always happen, but if I get the Spectre that gives me all of one suit early on, I can easily pivot to a flush build.

I just did a successful run with Obelisk and Burglar. I knew the risk was there, but I kept one of the Tarots in reserve to convert three cards to a particular suit. The one time I didn't have any hands available besides high card, I made a flush and kept the Obelisk alive. I suppose pairs would have been the safer way to go, but it worked out.

I wish the game recorded your success rate with each deck, although it sounds like some people prefer to reroll if they get a suboptimal start.

I wish there was, like, a New Game+ mode where you can choose the first two jokers that appear. I guess seeded runs are kind of like that, if someone is keeping a list of seeds that get you particular strong combos like Baron+DNA or Hanging Chad+Photograph.

I once got a Space Joker in Ante 1, then played 18 hands in a row without getting a single upgrade. I kept track because I was so annoyed with my luck.siriuslysomething posted:I have played so much of this game and just need to do the jokerless challenge (which is so loving hard) to have done all the decks and stakes and all the challenges. I got that one on the third try, when I got a telescope voucher in one of the first antes and then played a flush with every single hand. You might want to just keep rerolling until you can find a telescope, I think that's the winning strategy.

![]() This is one of my longest runs ever and I have to do some math on what to do. Those Polychrome Obelisks are at +9, I've played 23 Pairs, and my next-most-played hand is Flush at 13. I have tons of enhanced face cards, including glass and red seal. I think I should sell an Obelisk for Photograph, and depending on what hand I play, either copy the Hanging Chad or copy the Photograph. A glass face card with two Hanging Chads and Photograph is roughly 4^5 multiplier, which is 1,024.

I died to The Arm on Ante 12 in the game I just posted about. I got unlucky with lots of my glass jokers self-destructing, and then my cards weren't enough to score 2.4 billion. My best hand in that playthrough was 4,005,000,000 - still nowhere close to my best ever, which was 2.018*10^22 with Triboulet*, Hanging Chad**, and Photograph***. *: Kings and Queens give 2X mult when scored **: First played card gets re-scored two additional times ***: First scored face card gives 2X mult

I have a new personal Most Frustrating Loss. 8th ante boss was the Very Large Blind, so I rerolled and it gave me Crimson Heart, one random Joker disabled every hand. I had six jokers, it disabled the same X-Mult joker for all four hands, and I lost.

I wonder if anyone is actually tracking data on the success rate of various jokers at each difficulty. Gold stake is an enormous difficulty jump - I can get by on just vibes with any deck at lower stakes, but to win ante 8 of Gold, it feels like I either need a perfect strategy or I need to get lucky and see Photo Chad. I disagree with people saying flushes are a trap - if you can calculate the probability of getting flush draws, it's the most reliable higher-scoring hand type for most decks.

Ariong posted:In all seriousness I legitimately don’t see the difference between using a mod to force the joker to show up in the first shop and resetting over and over until you get it in the first shop. It’s the same thing. The random aspect is part of the game. This is a question that comes up with speedrunning all the time - at some point, a trick diverges so far from normal intended gameplay that it isn't considered a legitimate tactic to win the game. Installing mods or using the console would qualify. You can have fun playing Balatro however you like, but you haven't completed C++ in the normal sense if you installed a mod to make it easier.

Ariong posted:I just don’t see how installing a mod to make a joker show up in the first shop is easier than restarting until you get that joker in the first shop. It literally is easier, because it takes less time. You could alternatively play normally and have fun until you happen to see the last joker you need. Playing the game for enjoyment is not a competition. Playing the game to get Completionist++ is a competition and there are rules.

I just got Completionist+ yesterday. I really struggled with Magic Deck for some reason - it just never seemed to scale fast enough to keep up. Eventually I won when I got the Mad Joker in Ante 1, followed by a Hermit to double my money, and I copied it twice with my free Fools. I took turns playing each deck an equal amount, so the order in which I beat the decks on Gold stake also serves as my power level ranking for completing ante 8: Plasma Abandoned Yellow Nebula Anaglyph Ghost Blue Checkered Zodiac Painted Erratic Green Red Black Magic Also, here's the Wall of Shame of jokers that have never been part of any winning run for me: Greedy Joker (+3 mult for each Diamonds, this guy is just weak) Droll Joker (+10 mult for a Flush, awful) Four Fingers (flushes and straights can be made with 4 cards. Can be useful as part of certain combos) Marble Joker (Free Stone card with every blind. I think High Card runs are boring and rarely play them) Delayed Gratification ($2 per unused discard if no discards are used. This is such a bad way to make money) Blackboard (x3 mult if all held cards are Spades or Clubs. This could be good but I haven't had the chance to use him in a winning run) Superposition (Create a Tarot Card if you play an A-10 or 5-A straight. This one usually needs to get sold before Ante 8) Red Card (Gains +3 mult when a booster pack is skipped. It costs way too much money to scale up this card) Reserved Parking ($0.5 per face card held in hand. Too slow at earning money during the late-game) To The Moon (Up to $5 extra interest. Does this give more extra interest with Money Tree? If so, it could be awesome.) Stone Joker (+25 chips for each Stone card in deck. Like I said, I don't like stone playthroughs. This was the last joker I unlocked.) Diet Cola (Gives Double Tag when sold. I always sell this immediately) Campfire (Gains x.25 mult when a card is sold, resets after boss blind. Costs way too much to scale up.) Showman (Any card may appeal multiple times. I don't even see the appeal of this guy except for trying to stack up xmult cards) Matador (Earns $8 for each hand that triggers the Boss Blind ability. Great for making money early, but I often ditch econ jokers before the final boss) Cartomancer (Creates a Tarot card when Blind is selected. Awesome card that usually needs to get sold and replaced with a scoring joker) Astronomer (All planet and celestial cards are free. Yeah, this guy kinda sucks) Chicot (Disables every Boss Blind. As we just discussed, he is by far the worst Legendary Joker.)

![]() New personal best, 10^28. Triple Triboulet did most of the work. Being stuck with an eternal Golden Joker was unfortunate, because I had to sell my Photograph to get the Seltzer. This started out as a run to get more gold stickers before I got Triboulet around ante 5 and decided to go for a high score.

El Jeffe posted:Why not have Hanging Chad is position #2? Maybe I shouldn't question it though, you got a lot farther there than I ever have. I didn't actually do the math as I was playing, but after playing for a while I got a good intuition for how to maximize the mult. I think that hand had 5 kings and queens, so that's 5 cards doubled by Triboulet, with two extra triggers from Handing Chad and five extra triggers from Seltzer. Triple Trib makes it 8^12, which is 64 billion. Triple Hanging Chad would make it 2^16, which is only 65 thousand. Triple Seltzer would make it 2^22, which is 4 million. Double Triboulet and double Seltzer would be 4^17, only 17 billion, but possibly more score than triple Triboulet if I had played a hand with multiple glass cards.

Ibblebibble posted:So I got this like a week ago and already cleared on Red/Blue/Yellow decks, fun game. I've mostly been picking stuff up to fill my collection log and finding some fun combos as I do so. I have been wondering though, what does the blank voucher actually do? Every voucher makes a second voucher available to appear. The blank voucher leads to one of the most powerful, the antimatter voucher, which gives you an extra Joker slot.

Ibblebibble posted:Oh sweet, guess I'll pick it up more often if I have the cash to spare. Yes, the upgraded Hieroglyph is -1 Ante, -1 Discard, which is a lot better. I often skip Hieroglyph, but it can be useful if you've got a scaling joker like Wee Joker and want more time to power it up.

Last night my family invented "Texas Hold 'Em For People Who Don't Know The Rules". Instead of betting chips (we didn't have any), each player looks at their hand at each stage of betting and declares how good their hand is. The idea is to teach people how to figure out whether or not a hand would be a winner. This means there's no need to fold and stop playing for the round, since you can just say "My hand is awful" but stick around to see if you draw anything good.

Hanging Chad and Photograph is easily the strongest two-common combo in the game, so you can't go wrong picking up one of those jokers early and hoping you run into the other one. (Unless you get destroyed by The Plant, but there are ways to avoid that)

I just screwed myself over. I had two eternal polychrome Swashbucklers (Adds the sell value of all other owned Jokers to Mult), and I bought Clearance Sale and Liquidation (reduces the price of everything in the store by 50%) without realizing that it would also kill the sell value of the jokers in my hand.

Sandwich Anarchist posted:Wrl I guess all you gotta do is complain online. Just beat Black Deck for the first time, got Perkeo and Triboulet off of a double arcana pack on ante 1 lmao. I think Baron is your weak link. Baron is only multiplying your score by, at best, five if you play five kings and have four more kings in hand. Sock gives you eight times more points on any hand that starts with a king, and makes your Hiker bonus even bigger. You can use Perkeo for a ton of money by copying Temperance, or to raise everything in your deck to a King. I'm curious to see how high your score will get with this build, please post an update.

I'm in e17 now, this is insane Were the Driver's License and Showman negative jokers? Otherwise, they're not nearly as strong as your current jokers. I hope you can keep going, Triboulet is the key to a lot of exponential builds, and the fact you have Hiker as well is a huge help because that solves the common problem of getting a trillion mult but only 300 chips.

Rupert Buttermilk posted:Also, is Misprint worth it? Yes, it gives an average of 11.5 mult, so in the early game it's a huge help. Eventually it becomes too weak because it's a flat mult addition. Also, hovering over Misprint will tell you the next card in your deck. The text will flash a number from 2 to 14 and a letter. 11 is Jack, 12 is Queen, 13 is King, 14 is Ace. The letter will be C, D, H, or S to indicate the suit of the next card. It's usually not a huge advantage to know the next card in your deck, but it can be helpful if you almost have a flush or full house and aren't sure what to discard.
