Finally took down Black Deck Gold Stake after at least 100 attempts, a lot of which were ruined by one minor mistake here or there (like my straights accidentally turning into straight flushes and not being worth the right amount of points anymore)

Extremely stoked to never play that deck again. It’s not just “get past ante 2 and you’re okay”, you have to play so diligently the whole time or it can all collapse in a minute.

As I've been learning more and more about this game, I actually only recently started looking into skip blind bonuses and oh my god, I sort of wish I hadn't. Full disclosure, I've beaten about 5-6 decks now without having even glanced at the skip option.

Sure, they're great, but I'm reminded of something almost unrelated; years ago, when I was working a dead-end job at a call centre, we had an 'Early Release' book that you could sign during your shift. What would happen would be that, since our company couldn't detect rises and falls in call numbers, they'd start letting people go earlier than the end of their shift if it seemed like there was a massive downturn in calls, and they'd do this by going through the names that were put into the Early Release book. Every shift, there was that temptation to sign it, because getting to leave early was great, but the major caveat was that you wouldn't get paid if you left (though you'd obviously get paid for the time you were actually there).

This is me with the skip blind bonuses. I mean, some are ones that I now almost always go for (free rare joker!), but of course, not playing the hands, I'm missing out on money and any other sort of possible upgrading that might happen during the hand.

Do I skip? Should I skip? What if I skip too much? Aaaaaaaahhhhh.

Generally speaking you just never skip except in very specific situations. You get value from a few places by playing a round out:

-stacking bonuses on some Jokers like Hiker
-the interest and cash from leftover hands after winning the round
-triggering purple and blue and gold seals for their rewards, which are huge
-just seeing the shop at all to get more jokers to get more ahead of the curve

Very very often the skip rewards don’t match that value.

There are specific circumstances where skipping is viable (a “all cards in shop are free” joker in the first ante of Black Deck, and the 25 dollars after the boss one) but a lot fewer than you would think

A question about skipping blinds - the Red Stake is no money on Small Blinds. Obviously, with later blinds it would be foolish to skip because you're still collecting interest. But for the first small blind of the game, when you don't have enough money to collect interest nor do you have enough money to really do much at the store, is it worth it to skip the very first small blind of the game?

If the reward is “all packs in shop are free” or MAYBE “boss blind awards 25 bucks” then yeah skipping the first blind, if all I wanted was to beat the stake once, eventually.

That’s what I did for Black Deck Gold Stake anyway. A lot of times you still fail early on but when the stuff you get is really good it slingshots you

I was cruising to a victory on orange stake black deck with a madness and two eternal brainstorms, and I added an eternal swashbuckler but didn't think about placement.

If I'd just slid the madness over to the left the total would have been in the tens of millions.

That's what I'm saying, one mistake when you're on the Black Deck and it all falls apart! Not a fan

Pair also allows you the freedom to not have to get lucky with your draws, so you don’t instantly lose the one time you need to hit a straight and don’t draw it. But then Hanged Man helps with that.

I've seen the kind of hands that you need to get that high and I have no idea how you craft them in a game with as much variation as Balatro.

When you have a lot of money for rerolls you just do that until you get what you want. It’s easier than it sounds on white stake

If you want to try the Anaglyph thing then go for it, but I think in practice it's a lot shittier than it sounds on paper. There'll be a surprising amount of runs where you never get a negative tag and were effectively just playing a weaker deck

I think a big problem with the Anaglyph Deck strat is often those Negative Jokers are also rentals or perishable, so they hurt to have around. Assuming you even get a suitable Negative skip where doing the skip doesn't ruin you.

Ghost Deck should be pretty good just to help survive early antes with a broader variety of jokers.

Is there a specific meaning to when the chips/mult counters are on fire? I know it means you’re at pretty high numbers for your ante or whatever, but does it actually convey any usable information?

The fire means the hand you've currently played scores high enough to completely one-shot the blind on its own.
