![]() General Information This is a complex role madness Mafia game for 17 players with two unique mechanics on top of the basic gameplay: Dueling and dishonor. There are no jesters, involuntary alignment changes, misleading role PMs, falsified flips or other similar mechanics involved. Days will generally be approximately 48 hours long and nights 24 hours. Nights may end early if all actions are submitted; in that case leftover time will go into the day phase. The deadline will be approximately 10 pm UTC (5 pm EST), even if the day starts or ends early. Eliminations will be by majority vote with hammer once majority is reached. No-elimination days are possible. Shellception helped with improving the initial draft and proofreading. Thanks! What the gently caress is Legend of the Five Rings Legend of the Five Rings is a series of games set in the land of Rokugan, basically a fictional feudal Japan, the first of which appeared in the mid-90s. There is a pen and paper role-playing game several editions deep, several board games, and spin-off settings, but more than anything L5R is known as a collectible card game that for a while was almost popular enough to rival Magic: the Gathering. It underwent many iterations for a good 20 years or so, until about 2015 when the IP was sold to Fantasy Flight Games, who published a living card game edition of the game for several years before it was finally discontinued in 2021. The setting is also notorious for the original authors having a somewhat tenuous grasp on the Japanese language, resulting in a lot of names that sound incredibly goofy. I recommend rolling with it and not taking it too seriously. Do I need to know any lore to play? No. While there is plenty of flavor to go around, steps have deliberately been taken to randomize any aspects of roles that would lend themselves to flavor-solving. Simply enjoy the flavor for what it is. I want to anyway Rokugan is the dominant empire in the region, and largely isolated from other civilizations by stormy seas or hot deserts. To the southwest lies the Shadowlands and within them the Festering Pit, from which demons breach the veil between Jigoku and the mortal realm. Rokugan is ruled by a samurai elite organized into seven Great Clans; the Crane Clan, the Crab Clan, the Lion Clan, the Scorpion Clan, the Phoenix Clan, the Dragon Clan, and the Unicorn Clan. To the southeast, a yet-minor clan known as the Mantis Clan is making movements to become a Great Clan as well, although it will still be a number of years before that ambition will come to fruition. Each of the Great Clans claim direct descent from one of the eight kami - gods - who founded the nation, with the eighth kami having founded the imperial line. At the time this takes place, Emperor Hantei XXXIX sits on the Chrysanthemum Throne; however, he is young, and brash, and his rule is an ill-omened one. Already dark forces conspire around him. Within a few years the empire will experience one of the greatest upheavals in its history, but for now there is an uneasy peace between the seven Great Clans. However, those who know their history know that it has been almost one thousand years since Fu Leng, the ninth kami, was sealed within the Black Scrolls, and that a prophecy foretells that their unsealing, and the return of that dark god, is nigh. Dueling and Dishonor Honor is a big deal in Rokugan, and the way to defend your honor is through dueling. A quick introductory guide has been prepared, so please read it first: ![]() In short, all players have the ability to ##challenge other players to duels during the day. Each player has a ki pool representing their focus, tenacity and spiritual balance, that can be spent to increase your odds of winning a duel. An average player starts the game with 10 ki, which does not replenish. Spend it wisely. Duels are resolved thusly: For each player, a number of coins are flipped equal to one plus the amount of ki bet on the duel. Whoever wins the most flips wins the duel. Refusing duels causes dishonor. Having more than one stack of dishonor reduces the number of votes required to eliminate that player by 1 for each stack of dishonor beyond the first. Losing duels causes wounds and blocks the loser from performing day or night actions this cycle. Taking more wounds after the first risks death; when this happens, for each wound beyond the first, a coin is flipped. If any of those flips are lost, the wound is fatal, and the wounded player dies. Rules and Regulations Standard rules apply.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, always remember that your mental well-being is more important than a forum game. While antagonism and deceit are inherent features of social deduction games, there are lines that should not be crossed that may be highly personal. If you feel stressed out, abused, angry, or in any other way discomforted beyond what you feel is part of the game, do not hesitate to reach out and say so. Nobody will think ill of you if you have comments or concerns, or want to leave the game at any point, before the game or during the game. The following users have been suggested as points of contact if you do not feel you can reach out to me: The Traditional Games forum moderators, Leperflesh and Antivehicular; and Mafia regulars VoodooFly, Hal Insandenza, Bifauxnen, Monathin, Wologar, Maerlyn, EccoRaven, CCKeane, Opopanax, Sandwolf and Shellception. Night 0 has ended with the death of Hantei XXXVIII, EMPIRE-Aligned Chrysanthemum Emperor and Bayushi Shoju, EMPIRE-Aligned Scorpion Clan Samurai! It is a time of great unrest in Rokugan. An already fragile peace has been endangered by the deeds of the Scorpion clan champion, Bayushi Shoju, whose traitorous hand slew Emperor Hantei XXXVIII in order to prevent an ancient prophecy from coming true, and in turn, Shoju was slain by the Lion champion, Akodo Toturi. Now, the late emperor's son sits precariously on the throne as Hantei XXXIX. Already dark forces whisper that the black scrolls will soon be unsealed, ushering in the prophecied Thousand Years of Darkness. The coming years will see Rokugan erupt into one of the bloodiest wars the nation has seen; as of now, the powder keg lies still, but the fuse could be lit at any second... The game has begun. Despite the tension in the air and the promise of violence, there is a certain aura of gentleness and grace to the affair. JosefStalinator is the first to move. His blade is drawn swiftly and in a blur of silver that leaves only streaks in the eyes of those looking on. He is fast and graceful in his movements, his steps sure. He is the perfect image of the idealized samurai. His opponent moves with a calmness that is unnatural, his movements so slow they seem almost sluggish. The warrior attacks, but he deflects each blow, dodging the sword strikes with surprising agility in defiance of his calm, slow movements. It seems that he will not have to resort to other measures, but the warrior is persistent and attacks once again, a final attempt to end the duel in his favor. This time, CubicalSucrose does not defend. With a speed that belies his earlier movements, he catches his opponent's wrist and twists it. The blade falls to the ground. A kick to the stomach knocks the warrior down. CubicalSucrose has won the duel! His honor is proven (not that it was in doubt at this juncture).

He dodges out of the way just as the younger man's fist slams into the wall behind him. CubicalSucrose is no longer smiling. His gaze has turned serious. The younger man, though he tries, cannot hide the surprise on his face. He strikes again, and again, but his opponent is not so easily beaten. The man has more experience, he's seen things, he's lived things the younger man can't even imagine. And yet... when he goes for a strike, the younger man catches his hand. He grips his wrist tightly, holding him in place. And the older man struggles against his grip, but ultimately wrenches free. They continue to trade heavy blows, putting all their bodies can muster into the fight - and when the dust settles, both are too exhausted to carry on. The duel has ended with the challengers being equally matched!

Maugrim's face is set in a scowl, his brows knitted together in concentration. His opponent is the very picture of composure, his features as tranquil as the still waters of a pond. The duelists stare at each other, gathering their focus, seeking out their opponent's weak point. It's over as if in a flash. Steel flashes in the sun as their swords clash, the ringing of steel on steel echoing through the forest. PlasticAutomaton is the first to strike, a low slash aimed at his opponent's thigh, but the other blocks the attack easily. The second follows the first, the third, and then the fourth. They're too quick for Maugrim to keep track of, but he can't allow himself to falter, not now. He's already lost track of his opponent's sword, and he knows it's only a matter of time before he strikes true. Both fighters decide at the same instant to go for a final strike, and each blade stops an inch from the other's throat, simultaneously. A tense moment passes before the two nod - very carefully - at each other, acknowledging the other's skill. The duel has ended with the challengers being equally matched!

But Deadmeat can see the tension in their muscles, can feel the energy that crackles around them. It's almost like static, making hairs stand on end. One musclebound, wielding an iron rod that seems almost too clumsy to swing, and the other a thoughtful, quiet samurai wield a sleek, elegant katana. Zoya grins, shrugs, and charges at her opponent; he knows better than to parry such a heavy swing, and instead leaps out of the way, his sword at the ready. Zoya is a formidable foe, but she's not particularly fast. She swings again, her weapon a blur, but PlasticAutomaton is ready. A smack with the back of the blade, and Zoya's weapon hand is rebuffed; the club hits the ground and skids away, leaving her defenseless. With the flick of his blade, PlasticAutomaton delivers a glancing cut to his opponent's shoulder, but Zoya is faster than she seems. She dives for the club, then up again in a wild arc, and this time PlasticAutomaton has no choice but to meet the strike head on. The weapons clash in a great fury of force. Somber, too, looks still, but the sleek muscles seem to crackle with a burning fury barely unleashed. Neither warrior will go easy on the other. Rhymes clutches the katana easily, while her opponent falls into a familiar martial arms pose, fists clenched. He lunges, feet whirling, a powerful roundhouse kick aimed squarely at the samurai's head. Rhymes moves with such a speed it could scarcely be believed. Long before the kick has even reached halfway to her, she has traversed all the way to the other side of Somber, whose side is blooming crimson. Rhymes cleans the blood from the katana with a swat, returns it to its sheathe, and bows respectfully. Somber, meanwhile, can do little except gasp for breath. Rhymes With Clue has won the duel!

SporkChan posted:##challenge wologar wologar posted:##accept Once more, two enter the duelists' ground. Neither appears armed; but neither needs ordinary arms. Once more, it is a battle of air versus earth, cutting blades of wind and sharp jagged spikes. Spork strikes first, hurling a cyclone of shredding winds at wologar, but a swiftly summoned cage of stone protects him from harm; with a heavy, thunderous clap, the stone shatters into sharp shards, flying towards SporkChan at incredible speeds. The former does their best to dodge, but even assisted by magical conjured air, it is not enough. wologar has won the duel and proved his honor! Rhymes With Clue posted:##challenge Snooze Snooze Cruise posted:##accept The look on Rhymes's face is damning: their opponent is a traitor. Has to be. And so, the challenge is laid down, and Snooze Cruise accepts without hesitation. Each is relaxed, their hands gripping their swords, sizing the other up. For a long moment, there is complete silence. Neither combatant moves a muscle, and then in a flash of steel, it is over. However, to everyone's surprise, it's the more seasoned duelist of the two that first clutches their side and falls to the ground, groaning in pain. Snooze simply looks on, and nods, assured that honor has been reclaimed for all to see. Snooze Cruise has won the duel and proved her honor! Record of Dishonor: (Everyone is honorable!)

Deadmeat5150 posted:##Challenge Rhymes Rhymes With Clue posted:##Accept The morning sun dawns again on yet another duel over personal honor and the future of Rokugan. The older man grits his teeth, gripping his katana with a strength of conviction, while his opponent remains a picture of grace despite being on the receiving end of a sword stroke only hours prior. The former launches into a wild flurry of strikes, aggressive, heavy blows raining from above; Rhymes is more than able to parry them, however, even in this state, but Deadmeat does not let up easy. It takes quite a while for Rhymes to find an opening, but that opening is all that's needed to see Deadmeat brought to his knees. Rhymes With Clue wins the duel!

And so, at last, after the bloodiest night the court had seen in a long time, fingers finally converged on one person. Who can trust someone who hides their face behind a mask, after all? In the end, Snooze Cruise just sighed, and said that all she had done was for the good of Rokugan. Snooze Cruise a.k.a. Shosuro Kakure, KOLAT-Aligned Scorpion Clan Courtier has been exiled from the court! ![]() quote:The Scorpion clan is sworn to protect the empire from within, yes. But what good is an empire built on the false promises of gods and an undeserving imperial line? Once mankind rules itself, then there will be an empire worth protecting. Until that day comes you will use every political trick you can muster to oust Rokugan’s unworthy rulers. Following Snooze's expulsion, some effort was made to discover whether any allies were left in the court. Though it was difficult to piece together the evidence, seasoned Kitsuki investigators managed to recover enough forensic remains to identify at least one other co-collaborator. Some time ago, wologar a.k.a. Kuni Yoruko, KOLAT-Aligned Crab Clan Witch-Hunter was reduced to cinders! ![]() quote:Within Rokugan are several organizations devoted to the detection and suppression of heresies and dangerous magics, such as Kuni family’s school of witch-hunters, among which you rank. You are also a member of the Kolat conspiracy, which seeks to overthrow the Hantei imperial line and establish a new order with no gods or emperors. The investigators also discovered troubling evidence that one of their own had meet their end in a similar fashion not long ago. Some time ago, PlasticAutomaton a.k.a. Kitsuki Yakou, EMPIRE-Aligned Dragon Clan Investigator was reduced to cinders! ![]() quote:The Kitsuki family are pioneers of investigative methodology. Unlike the rest of the Empire, you emphasize the need for evidence before a criminal can be brought to justice, and one of the best ways to get evidence of killing intent is by engaging the suspect directly. The following days were peaceful, comparatively speaking. No more murders occurred, and a group of witch hunters were sent to verify that no more tainted samurai remained in the court. For now, the empire is at peace. But with Hantei XXXIX on the throne, it will not last. One day, soon, Yogo Junzo will open the first Black Scroll and set in motion events that will cast Rokugan into war. But now, perhaps, the Empire will have a chance to resist. The Second Day of Thunder is fated to come, after all, and seal away the impurity of Fu Leng once more. Those that remain know it is their duty to remain loyal to the Empire until their last breath. EMPIRE has won the game, alongside the Brotherhood of Shinsei! Hyper Crab Tank fucked around with this message at 14:53 on Sep 29, 2023 |
