I, the mighty Bayushi Aramoro, champion of the legendary Scorpion clan, will hereby take up my blade in defense of our Emperor. Death to the Prideful Lions, the Outsider Unicorns, the Obtuse Crab, the Prancing Crane, and the Silent Dragons. Only our allies of the Phoenix shall burn brightly with us as our star ascends the heavens.

I stand before you today with a heavy heart and a troubled spirit. It grieves me to see that in this gathering of noble and honorable souls, we have not yet addressed the most profound and sorrowful event that has befallen our Empire - the passing of our beloved Emperor Hantei. In times such as these, it is our duty, our solemn obligation, to pay our respects, to honor his memory, and to discuss the path forward for Rokugan. The Emperor's death has left a void at the heart of our Empire, and it is our responsibility to ensure the continuity of his legacy. Let us not allow politics or personal ambitions to cloud our vision. We must remember the sacred principles of Bushido and the honor that binds us together as samurai. The Emperor's passing is a momentous event, and it is our responsibility to navigate this tumultuous time with wisdom, grace, and integrity. I implore each and every one of you to reflect on the gravity of this situation. Let us come together, discuss the future of Rokugan, and pay our respects to the memory of our fallen Emperor. It is only through our unity and unwavering commitment to honor that we can hope to guide our Empire through these trying times.

In the sacred traditions of Rokugan, the duel is a means to resolve disputes with honor and integrity. To deny such a challenge is to forsake the very essence of our samurai soul. It is an act that not only disgraces the individual but tarnishes the reputation of their clan and their ancestors. Let us remember that the path of Bushido calls upon us to embrace courage, uphold honesty, and demonstrate the unwavering resolve of our noble lineage. A refusal to face an honorable challenge is a betrayal of these sacred principles, a betrayal of our ancestors, and a betrayal of our Empire. I implore all those who would shirk their duty to uphold their honor, to reconsider their actions and to find the strength to face their adversaries with dignity and respect. For in doing so, we preserve the legacy of our samurai ancestors, and we uphold the honor that defines us.

As a magistrate, I pledge to uphold justice and ensure that those who dishonorably refuse a righteous duel will face the consequences of their actions. Let us all strive to be exemplars of the code of Bushido and stand together in defense of our Empire's honor.

Your actions have cast a shadow upon your name and stained the very earth with your cowardice. To deny me the right to a righteous duel is not just an affront to my honor but a grievous insult to the very soul of Rokugan. I challenge you, now, in front of these witnesses, to restore the honor you have so callously discarded. You cannot hide from your transgressions any longer. Face me in combat, and let the kami bear witness to your redemption or your final disgrace!

Prepare yourself, for the reckoning has come, and your destiny awaits on the edge of my blade!

My friends, my allies, and I suppose the rest of you as well. Please... enjoy this little performance by the Imperial Noh Players.

quote:

[The stage is set in the austere elegance of a traditional Noh theater, illuminated by soft, filtered moonlight. A single cherry blossom tree stands to one side, its delicate petals falling like silent tears. The sound of a distant flute drifts through the air as the Honorable Magistrate, clad in pristine white robes, stands center stage. The dishonorable Samurai, Maugrim, kneels before him, his armor battered and his head bowed in shame. The audience sits in reverent silence.]

HONORABLE MAGISTRATE :
[In a voice filled with authority and disappointment, he begins, his words measured and deliberate.]

Maugrim, you were entrusted with the mantle of honor,
Yet, you stand before me now, a fallen sakura petal, a disgrace to our noble lineage.
Your actions have sullied your very soul,
And your cowardice has besmirched the way of the samurai.

[The dishonorable Samurai, Maugrim, trembles but dares not to lift his gaze.]

HONORABLE MAGISTRATE :
[With a solemn gesture, he points a graceful finger towards Maugrim.]

You, who quailed when destiny beckoned,
When the battlefield demanded valor and unwavering resolve,
You forsook the ancient code, the Bushido of our ancestors,
And your sword remained sheathed, like a snake in its burrow.

[The dishonorable Samurai, Maugrim, feels the weight of his disgrace, his eyes downcast.]

HONORABLE MAGISTRATE:
[With a voice now resolute, he raises a folding fan in his hand.]

For your betrayal of honor and your ignominious cowardice,
I, Deadmeat5150, the Honorable Magistrate, pass judgment upon you,
Without faltering or hesitation, without mercy or remorse.
You shall meet your fate by the blade, an end befitting your transgressions.

[The dishonorable Samurai, Maugrim, bows his head even lower, tears of shame trickling down his face.]

HONORABLE MAGISTRATE:
[The Honorable Magistrate lowers his fan, his countenance unwavering.]

May the spirits of our ancestors weep for your forsaken soul,
May your dishonorable acts be forever expunged from memory.
The verdict is death, at the hands of a noble warrior,
To cleanse the dishonor you have brought upon our lineage.

[As the Honorable Magistrate withdraws from the stage with measured grace, Maugrim remains kneeling, his destiny sealed. The melancholic strains of the distant flute continue to echo through the theater as the cherry blossom petals fall, a silent witness to the solemnity of the scene, and the curtains close.]

The Mantis are considered a major clan since the collapse of Beiden Pass shut down the largest trading vein through the central mountains. Because the Mantis have such a stranglehold on shipping they were basically elevated by the Crane as a way to curry favor.

Honorable samurai and esteemed shugenja of Rokugan,

I stand before you today, not as a man accused, but as an Emerald Magistrate who finds himself perplexed by the sudden shift in suspicion towards my actions. It is a curiosity that has weighed heavily on my heart, for I have devoted my life to the pursuit of justice and the preservation of our great Empire. I concede, without reservation, that I may have erred in my judgment when it came to removing certain dishonorable samurai from our courts. The path of justice is a treacherous one, and we, as Emerald Magistrates, must navigate it with diligence and care. In my pursuit of weeding out those who tarnished our halls with their deceit and disgrace, I may have inadvertently misjudged the intentions of some, and for that, I offer my humble apologies.

However, I must also remind all assembled here today that I was entrusted with the solemn duty of making the final call on the fate of the despicable Unicorn Clan traitor. I did not take this responsibility lightly. The Unicorn Clan's loyalty to the Empire has been questioned, and it was my duty to ensure that justice was served, without fear or favor. I made that call to protect the honor and integrity of our lands, and I stand by that decision.

Throughout my service, I have been nothing but honest and stalwart. My unwavering commitment to the code of Bushido and the laws of the Emerald Empire remains unshaken. My actions have always been driven by a deep sense of duty and a profound love for our Emperor and our land. It is my hope that my record speaks for itself, and that my dedication to the pursuit of justice is evident to all who have witnessed my service. In this time of uncertainty, let us not forget the core principles that bind us together as samurai of Rokugan. We must remain vigilant in our pursuit of justice, honor, and the well-being of our Empire. Let us not allow suspicion to divide us but rather let it serve as a reminder of the importance of our duty.

I will concede, for the moment, that my pursuit of certain members of the Crab have perhaps been hasty, maybe even irrational, but I am still firm in my convictions. I will, for the time, set aside this enmity that we may pursue the enemies of the Empire together.

Honor means little against the Shadowlands, magistrate. Its stain endangers the very soul of the Empire and only those of the utmost courage and purity dare fight against this crawling corruption head on. The Lion talks big about honor in battle, but believe me, there is no honor when children are abducted or killed in front of their mothers, when border towns must be closed and their villagers left to die, all in the name of containing the taint so that the rest of the Empire can grow fat and rest easy.

Yes, yes. It's the same tired speech. There is a reason that the Crab are afforded a great deal of leeway while on the Wall. But you are not on the Wall here, samurai. Here, you must remember your oaths and your dedication to Bushido. That is the law, and it is my duty to carry out that law.

I would remind you that despite the outward appearance of the Scorpion, they value loyalty above all else. Whereas there have never been more traitors to the Empire than those from the Crab.
