i haven't done many of these yet but starting with central asia is usually a good idea. there's a huge amount of countries in the area (and europe), meaning the answer can't really be that far away, unless it's a different continent entirely

yeah, i do like to mix it up, but frequently start with (spoiler?)uzbekistan/azerbaijan/turkmenistan/iran and that is usually better than other starting places.

I start with a central one and mostly try a kind of orientation search based on distance. I like to pick a "central" one like say, burkina faso, switzerland, or vatican, and then look for distances. If it's below 5k, I jump to the other guesses between africa and europe, or israel for the middle-east. If it's ~7000km away, I jump to either panama or tajikistan (if it's neither I gotta go for south africa and indian ocean nations). If it's around 12k out I'm likely in eastern continental asia: south korea, bhutan, sri lanka, etc. by this method you rarely lose more than 1-3 guesses finding the right area, and the rest is just trying to triangulate countries in small blobs. The places that still murder me on the regular are all the small atlantic islands above venezuela and when you get one of the small ones in the pacific, both of which are impossible to me without a map. The two worst runs I had was when they picked some of these tiny islands near the north or south pole that you don't even know have a name, and all continents correlate to everything.

alright, so i went through with the calculation. if you go with my earlier theory that you want to start with a country that is removed and has a straight relationship between # of countries by distance, than you want to go with australia. here's mononcqs' burkina faso, which looks like it does a better job separating out continents. so i think that argument makes sense and is probably a better guess.  i think i should instead calculate which country does the best at separating out continents, but that's a bit harder of an analysis.
