won't the eu measure mandating removable batteries dictate some smartphone design reassessment in the coming years? did that get called off?

No, because it doesn't dictate a removable battery. It says that the battery must be easily replaceable without damaging the device or the battery without proprietary tools. Many smartphones meet that goal today.

There's also this little nugget.

quote:

Mobile phones and tablets subject to disassembly and repair requirements under the Ecodesign Framework (Directive 2009/125/EC) should comply with those requirements, rather than the removability and replaceability requirements under the Batteries Regulation.

Since that framework lays out things like cycle endurance and the ability to limit charge to 80%, I'm pretty certain that nearly all modern smartphones comply with this framework which means they are exempt from the battery replacement framework.

So yes, the internet lied to you. The EU has no regulation requiring removable batteries in the future.

they do away with larger batteries, sd card and audio ports for the primary design goal of thinness, which is what most everyone cares about more than those features. if you use a case you're adding a few mm and throwing away the killer feature of modern phones.

imo it's unhinged to spend money on something that makes something that goes in my pocket bulkier and harder to use. i instead opt to not drop my pocket computer, a strategy that's served me well for over a decade

Literally would not care if my Pixel 7 was the same thickness top to bottom, instead of having the camera bump. Use the space for a bigger battery or whatever you want. I work in a service shop, so my phones all immediately go in a case for better grip with gloves/drop protection.

"Everyone" is doing some heavy lifting there. Most people do not care if their phone is identifiable as a specific brand/model.

I miss not having to use a case. I find them too slippery these days (and big!). My last phone slipped out of my hand and broke after owning it a week. The repair cost more than just getting a used one. My current phone slipped out of my hand as I was taking it out of the box (onto my couch, thankfully).

Yup! :(

OnePlus 13 feels really nice without a case with the blue plastic back though it does allow for more fantom touches.

I'm actually trying to remember the last time I've actually been drunk so that's not really an issue. It may be pre-pandemic. Not saying that I don't drink, because I do, but you don't really get drunk on 1-3 beers a week. The penalty isn't worth the fun anymore at 45.

I'm too cowardly to go caseless but it is tempting. Now is definitely not the time to go caseless though, as tariffs will probably make phones $100-$200 more expensive in the near future. Definitely glad I bought a OP13 when I did!

Yeah, that's part of why I grabbed a Pixel 8 at a crazy discount a while back, so I have a stable of Pixel phones to provide some redundancy to me, my partner, and my dad - I have a 6, an 8, and an 8 Pro, she has an 8 Pro, and he has a 6a. If one of their phones goes down they can be up and running with an almost identical experience in minutes. Pixel to Pixel transfer has become slick as hell - when I set up the 8 from my 8 Pro it was almost eerie how fast it basically cloned the 8 Pro onto the 8. This must've been using wifi 6 over my router, which is something like 1.7gbps, and I swear it only took a few seconds.

Come to think of it, every single one of those phones is in a Spigen case, too, so have at least somewhat decent protection.

I did, but that doesn't really factor into it. More that I'm at the point where I have a single drink just to enjoy that drink and. leave it at that. Wasn't really a conscious decision on my part , just something I gravitated away from.

I just got a Nothing Phone 3a Pro and ditched AT&T for RedPocket, because AT&T refused to activate it and was convinced that the IMEI belonged to a 3g phone.

Nah, I'm right there with ya. :hfive:

I personally have 3 Pixels and a Motorola that I hope to render usable by putting LineageOS on it since Motorola just flat abandoned the phone. And those are just the phones I consider viable.

I'm a lovable meme.

I put a spugen case on my OnePlus 13. It's a shame because it's a beautiful phone and I wanted it because of that fact but I walk my dog four times a day and I just know sooner or later it's going to drop. Not least of because of the size unbalancing it when used one handed (such as when walking a dog).

Regarding earbud storage: not a phone but I think Dank pods once reviewed a nugget mp3 player that had that feature.

Sure they do. Or I should say, they at least have a clear case with black corners. So the corners won't yellow (which is important to me). But even then it sort of takes away from the look of the thing if you ask me.

whats the deal with chargers, cables and fast chargers etc? id like a couple (usb c and usb a) for my pixel 8, but i feel like i remember there being some issues where certain non compliant cables or chargers would mess with the battery on your phone or something. am i good to grab some random chargers off aliexpress, or do i need to go to my local retailer and ask for the artisanal, organic free range chargers for 200 bucks each?

do not buy random chargers or cables off aliexpress unless you have a usb cable tester and a usb load tester.

even cheap cables included with cheap things can be questionable on my testing. from being unshielded , from the cable cooking at barely its max rated current, to it just not working at max or having high resistance.

as for chargers, random no name cheap chargers do make cool spiky graphs but I wouldn't actually use them on a device I don't want to murder.
