Don't have the Parralax but I switched to one of those ultra thin aramid cases for my Pixel 9 and I find the combination of thin profile but still slightly increased grip to be quite pleasant.

I had the Paralax for my 7 but went with a clear no-name TPU case for my 9. The main decider for me was that I didn't like the colors in the Paralax at launch time. (The cheap TPU case was better than the name brand one this round btw.) I haven't noticed a difference in use.

My favorite case ever was the Caseology Athlex I had for my Pixel 7 Pro. It felt like the kind of product you'd get if congress had budgeted millions for phone case R&D to be used in a battlefield. If they had sold it for 50-75 dollars, I'd still have felt like I got my money's worth it felt so robust and durable.

They changed the design and material after that and I tried one with my Pixel 8 and it was so incredibly disappointing. Now it looks like all their Athlex cases have adopted the cheaper construction.

Honestly, I'd have a foldable if they weren't 1500+ bucks. My dream is still a Microsoft Courier, the Duo came close, but I think just a plastic back is the way to go. Make it a bit more rugged than the clearance one I got that cracked just from sitting on my desk.

I have a pair of Pixel Buds Pro (the OG, not the 2). When using DuoLingo with them, very frequently the first part of the audio on a lot of the questions cuts out, like the first .5-1 second. It's really loving annoying. This doesn't seem to happen when I'm not using the Pixel Buds; is there like a setting I can change, or are these things just pieces of poo poo?

My dumb solution is queue up 10 minutes of silence, a song on spotify. That keeps the bluetooth transmission continuous.

I wonder if there's a setting in the developer section or somewhere to change the Bluetooth behavior to not require that. I have a pair of Anker Soundcore earbuds I'm really happy with, and often find myself having to hit to restart a song because it missed the very first part of it. I'd rather get slightly poorer battery life by having them connected continuously then deal with the lag.

its not just portable BT devices that has these fade/lag on playback issues, even loving desktop DACs are not immune in tyool 2025. Some even has it occurring over SPDIF too, its so bloody stupid

I'll give that a try. I'm kind of surprised DuoLingo doesn't do that automatically to prevent this problem.

Probably Best Buy will have it. They usually do.

I just ordered one through Google Store with a $100 off promo code and they give you a $100 Google store credit. They're giving me $165 for a trade in on my 6a which I got for like $200 after trading in my 4a.

So I'm only paying like $258 or something for the 9a out of pocket and I get that $100 store credit. It's a suspiciously good deal and I really hope it's not because they know the phone is a dud after delaying the release.

If anyone wanted to buy a OnePlus phone in the near future, you better do it now. The OnePlus Watch 3 just got a whopping $170 price increase (going from $329 to $499) presumably due to tariffs. I suspect that the phones are going to go up a similar percentage once they exhaust already imported inventory.

If I’m thinking about moving away from iPhone is a refurbished Pixel 8 Pro a good option right now? I want to order something ASAP before prices skyrocket. I mainly use my phone for Discord, web browsing, and YouTube, I don’t play any games on it. I was looking at a OnePlus 12r or similar but software support doesn’t seem as good. I had been thinking about an iPhone 15, but I have an app that isn’t available on app stores anymore and my understanding is I can load an APK on Android, but nothing similar on iPhone.

I guess the question is refurbished by who? Google doesn't appear to sell the 8 Pro as refurbished yet and I think most other seller's definition of refurbshed means "it boots."

What's your price-range? The Pixel 9a is avalible new right now for $499 and you get $100 of Google Store credit to put towards any other accessories you might want. The only real compromises from the 8 Pro are in the camera department.

You can sideload an APK easily on android, but I would caution you to research why it was delisted. If it's a 32bit app, it will not work on a modern phone no matter what as 32bit support was removed at the SoC level. Additionally, even if it is a 64bit app, there COULD be compatability issues with modern versions of Android. I just want to be sure you know that you might still be stuck not being able to run the app even if you sideload.

There's probably more leeway with Google deivces as far as time and prices as I suspect Google has quite a bit of inventory in the US already.

It’s off Backmarket, so at least 80% battery, screen and body quality requirements.

I didn’t see you could get a 9 that cheap, that’s an option. The only accessories I really want are a case with decent screen protection and a magnetic back, along with a battery pack.

The app was delisted because it’s Russian and under sanctions, but it was last updated in 2022 so it *should* be 64-but I think?

Edit: oh, pixel 9a. I wish Google had the student discount deals in the US but it seems they don’t.

I’d even be looking at something like a Moto G Power but those are Xbox huge and Motorola apparently doesn’t do security updates for long. $350 or so for this SE 2020 is the most I have ever spent on a phone, and IDK how high specs I really need since I’m not enough of a degenerate to play mobile games.

Yeah, the 9a just lauched this week. It has the same processor as the Pixel 9 models, but less RAM. It has no telephoto lens and smaller (but still good) main and wide camera sensors. It also has the largest battery that's been put in a Pixel device before. I don't see any magnetic cases on the Google Store though, so yeah, not sure how useful the $100 credit will be for you.

There's no native way to read battery health on a Pixel device, so I'm not sure how that reseller is able to actually rate the batteries. That's not to say that you couldn't get a good device, it's just that sites like those can be hit or miss. As long as they have a good return policy, then it's probably fine.

I don't know what changed, but I can't figure out how to get more than $90 for my 6a.

Edit: I figured it out. $165 is the trade-in for if you're buying an unlocked 9a, $90 if you're buying a Google Fi 9a

There's also the Samsung A36. Amazon has it for $340 (new) right now and Samsung promises 6 years of support. Uses a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 which is a solidly midrange chip with less performance than the tensor chips in the Pixel 8 or 9. If you're not playing games though, it should be fine for basic phone tasks without feeling like poo poo. Has a nice OLED display. Samsung cuts cost by using a lot of plastic in the build but honestly, if you're just going to put a case on it, that might not matter.

No, that is correct. They release the base and pro model then release the _a model ~6 months later, it's supposed to be a budget option.

Yes you got a deal, there's a lot of deals out there especially on big days like black Friday or through carriers. Google Fi is currently giving the 9a away free* if you add a line to your service and it's actually financed so that they pay you back the exact amount you spend every month over 24 months. It keeps you using the service, adds the billable extra line they want you to pay for, and gives you the phone to use with it.

My 9 Pro also had a lot off the base price because I got it through Fi and financed it with them over 24 months, it doesn't make it $600. I also got the Pixel Watch 3 for free* with the 24 month bill credits that cover the payments exactly. With the pixel watch I had to pay about $20 in tax only.

zhar
May 3, 2019

I was referring to the pixel line in general rather than the a as apparently none have wifi calling on my carrier. Maybe flagship is the wrong term (that honour probably belongs to samsung) but I figured the google phones were at least the reference implemention and likely some of the best supported in the android world.

Still a carrier issue. There's likely nothing technical that's preventing it on the phone end, the carrier just hasn't enabled it on those models.

I'm aware of that hence I said "on my carrier". The annoying thing is it's an mvno and the host does support it on pixel phones. One of those situations where they blame google (for not provisioning them or something) and google blame them. They don't sell pixel phones which might have something to do with it.

Which MVNO? If they use AT&T you can basically forget about wifi calling. If it's Verizon or T-mobile based, it will probably work on a different mvno.

Does Google Voice work in the UK? Like, does it generate a phone number for you? It's not an ideal workaround, but if you needed to make outgoing calls over wifi then it might be at least a partial solution. I have it set up on my phones without SIM cards just so they can still operate as phones over wifi in a pinch.

I usually listen to sirius xm in my car, and while they do have an app, I just set some favourite channels and just control them from the steering wheel (move up and down a bit). Set AA to not start playing music and it all works fine. However, if I do start an music app from AA once (spotify, sirius xm, whatever), it will start playing it if it is still running on the device when I start the car for at least the first few times. I have to manually change the media source in the car to the radio.
