The EU is going to require user-replaceable batteries by 2027, so while that won't affect the Pixel 8, the 7 years of support will eventually not be bottlenecked by battery planned obsolescence.

What's the cheapest smartwatch I can get if all I care about is seeing my notifications/texts, setting alarms/timers, and using it for NFC payments?

And how far away from my phone can they generally get before losing connection?

That first happened to me when I bought my first/only Apple product (an iPad 3): "Why can't I access the file system? Why is everything on the tablet just thrown into a lovely iTunes blender?"

I hear it's a little better now.

Pixel 5 is highly unlikely to receive any more updates, major or security. According to this page the Zenfone 10 will get up to 4 years of security updates https://zentalk.asus.com/t5/zenfone-10/update-policy-how-long-will-the-zenfone-10-be-getting-security/td-p/386480, while the Pixel 8 will get 7 years of major and security updates (I'm doubtful of Google living up to this).

I can't tell you which device is actually "better", just point you to YouTube phone reviewers and you'll have to take their opinions for what you think they're worth. Personally I'd probably get the ASUS, but I have a history of making bad decisions.

Has Google not honored their update claims on previous pixels? Or is this just "haha Google gives up on things"? Because that wouldn't be relevant unless Google suddenly decides to ditch the entire Pixel line.

You can say to the above any of 'Yes', 'Who cares?', or 'Phones are nothing like these examples'. That's why I say it's my subjective feeling and I don't think anyone else should have it because I don't even want to feel this way.

I know right?

The imaginary, shallow people you're trying to impress (you're projecting) are going to care more about the suit you're wearing and the car you're driving, since I'm assuming all "young professionals" can afford whatever phone they want, and they all look basically the same unless you go out of your way to choose a garish color or case. And 90% of people use cases anyway.

Pixel 6a. Maybe you don't keep your phone plugged in all the time? It's when Android keeps the battery capped at 80% once the phone has been plugged in for long enough. Which is fine, I just don't want the constant notification showing up.

The no NFC thing is kind of a bummer, but with smart watches these days, it's less of an issue if you can't pay with a phone. Otherwise, it's a pretty drat compelling budget package. However, same caveat as the Nothing Phone 2a when it comes to the US band support (it's available through their beta developer program that anyone can join). Really only think about getting it if you are on T-Mobile unless you just want a wifi device to play around with. You might be able to get away with it on AT&T if you forgo all 5g and wifi calling support.

I really hope that Nothing decides to really go for this pricepoint in the US with wide carrier support as this would be a great budget phone for a lot of people.

Kind of feels like a Pixel Xa with 7 years of support is a better value, especially when accounting for trade-in.

I woke up this morning and the screen is starting to separate on my 6a. I'm assuming that happens due to a swollen battery. I'm pretty pissed that this happened after only 2 years.

Any chance of there being non-contract deals out there (so BB i guess) for phones I can pick up in-person?

Yeah, Best Buy seems like it'll be my best shot, but I'm currently online with Google support. I'm hoping they'll give me a break on a repair considering it's a safety hazard and not a normal hardware failure, and maybe I can bring it to one of their Asurion locations and get it back fairly quickly.

What was the first Xa model to get 7 years of security updates? I'm thinking of buying one used as a backup and charging/updating it once a quarter just so I don't have to panic if this happens again.

Edit: drat, looks like the 8a.

Is there a setting that can cause non-silent notifications to not appear at all when the phone is charging? I tried Googling the issue, but I only found questions about the opposite, where notifications only show up when the phone is plugged in.

I have a 6a and a connected GW4C if that matters, but I wasn't having these issues until I had to factory reset when getting the battery replaced.

1. A two-port travel charger for my phone (Pixel 6a) and watch (GW4C).

2. A travel router

3. A VPN for my phone so I'm not exposing myself to plane public wifi. I'm not going to be doing anything shady or technical, and I'm probably going to stick to cellular coverage when I'm on the ground anyway.

Thanks. Now that I think about it, I'd probably want 3 ports, one for the router, so I guess this would be the equivalent: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger-Compact-MacBook-Pixelbook/dp/B0C4YTB56H

And this is a router from a brand I've actually heard of: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Ultra-Portable-TL-WR1502X-Approved-Multi-Mode/dp/B0D41G5N95

Edit: And the watch charger uses a USB-A port, but I also have A -- C extension cables because the charger cable is loving tiny and also non-detachable. In this case, I can just use the A port because it doesn't matter if the watch is charging on a desk across the room for a couple of nights.

Unless you leave your phone sitting on a charger all day while you work, you really don’t need the 80% limit.

Think about it critically for a second. I’m going to limit my device to 80% today, so that in 4 years the device won’t be at 80% capacity even though I’m living with it at 80% capacity this entire time anyways.

You are just baking your battery degradation in early, voluntarily.

I only use the charging limit on my tablets which remain plugged in pretty much 24/7 or my other phones that I don’t use very often so they aren’t sitting full in storage.

Otherwise, just use adaptive charging so that the phone isn’t sitting full all night and just use it. 80% limit was honestly more useful when a phone couldn’t realistically last a full day so you kept it on charge whenever you could to keep it topped off.

I do, in fact, keep my phone plugged in, and my 6a ended up with a swollen battery earlier this year.

I know some Samsung models were known for that, but my s8+ never had an issue despite me maining it until the security updates stopped.

If I have a Galaxy Classic 4 and don't do fitness-related stuff on it, is a PW3 a significant upgrade?

Also, is an 8a a significant upgrade over a 6a? It's kind of pissing me off that on the trade-in list, there's the s8 and the s9+, but not the s8+, which is the phone I would trade in. Any chance I can get support to accept the s8+, because that would be a $60 difference.

Edit: Typo, had GW3 instead of PW3

Cruft Jr is finally getting her own apartment, and wants a "television". The things she thinks a "television" does are:

It seems clear to me that what she wants is a monitor and an Android device that can run Dolphin, with some sort of bluetooth remote control.

I asked about this about a year ago, maybe in this thread, and everybody was all horned up about this thing that looked like a Nintendo Switch (e: it was the AYN Odin 2). Jr doesn't need hot-docking or a built-in screen, but is that Switch-looking thing still the best option?

The Retroid Pocket 5 just released to good reviews, and it's cheaper (albeit not quite as powerful) as an Odin 2.

You might also want to ask this in the retro gaming handheld thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3937810

And if you don't need a screen, then maybe an Nvidia Shield? I don't know how it runs Dolphin, though.

It also wouldn't surprise me if the Pixel OS isn't as well optimized for Eastern customers.

Why would integrating iOS behaviors/gestures be more popular in a market with less consumers who are used to them and have committed them to muscle memory?

App power usage settings are still a bit of a clusterfuck on OxygenOS 15.

On Pixel (and I believe this behavior is stock behavior):

You first choose whether or not you want an app to be allowed to have background usage. The default is on.

From there, you can set that background usage to be “Optimized (default)” or “Unrestricted” for something you don’t want killed.

This is all very clear. By default an app can run in the background to do stuff, but it’s going to be subject to Doze in the “Optimized” state. If you only want an app to do things when it’s in the foreground, you turn off “Allow Background usage” altogether.

Where can I set an app to "unrestricted" in stock Android 15? I see the "Allow background usage" toggle for each app, but nothing else.

Edit: n/m, had to tap on the option and not the toggle, I always get tripped up by that when Android does it that way.
