"Hey Google, plan my dinner for the week, I'm planning on getting takeout on Friday."

In the background, Bard finds 6 dinners based on your dietary preferences and restrictions, breaks down the ingredients list, interfaces with the app for your local grocery store and places an order for the ingredients, checks your calendar and selects a pickup time that would work best on your schedule, puts the dinners on your calander based on prepation time and ingredient shelf life (being sure to allow plenty of time to cook/eat/and cleanup around other events), then plops the recipes into Keep for you to access at prep time. This all happens on device.

This sounds like a cool concept that will never materialize at this level of cohesion/completeness in any of our lifetimes, tbh. Even if we reach a point in the next 5-10 years that you can provide this level of input and the phone does all of these steps, I am willing to bet the results will be far from seamless. Things like unexpected ingredient substitutions from the recipe stage or the ordering stage, to fuckups with pickup/delivery times, etc. Absolutely not something I'm personally interested in alpha/beta testing, and you know that's exactly how it will be implemented.

How close are you taking those photos? I get a similar result on my P5 if I'm like a few inches from a flat surface like that, like just at the limit of where it can focus in the center. Moving the camera back just a few inches makes a significant difference.

Gave this a shot and it seems broken too. My file structure is set up as:

Pixel Fold\
---> Internal shared storage\
--------->Pictures\
----------------->Family\
----------------->Travel\
----------------->Backup\
----------------->Misc\

...with further sub folders in those. Seemed reasonable to me.

Google Gallery shows every single subfolder (100+) by default. These subfolders can't be selected or moved. I can apparently shuffle around the 20,000+ files amongst themselves though if I enjoy scrolling endlessly as each thumbnail loads. :thumbsup:

You could probably use an actual file explorer (Solid Explorer is good) if you want it to abide by your preferred file structure. Most gallery apps I've seen are tuned to blur the storage structure and just show the content.

$175 estimate for a cracked P5, pretty sure I couldn't sell it for half that.

I've had good consistency with that gesture by putting my thumb down right at the edge of the screen and pausing for a beat. The menu pops out and then I can drag it out all the way.

e: oh oops, apparently I would only get 5 GB monthly of data for this purpose anyway on my google fi plan so uhhh probably not worth the hassle lol

If you use EasyTether it should bypass the tethering data cap in theory (it bypasses the speed limit on my plan's tethering). $10, but there's a lite version that you can test with at least.

That sounds cool, but will Google get mad at me?

Doubt it, but can't say for sure, I don't use it a lot (and I don't have Fi). But, when I do, it's nice to not be artificially limited.

They'll slow you down after like 35GB either way, I think.

Why the gently caress are my device backups just automatically deleted from Drive if I remove the account from the phone?? Really souring this new P9P for me right now. :argh:

I would have insisted on doing the transfer in best buy before wiping the old phone if I expected that to happen.

e; man, looks like all of my timeline data going back like 12+ years is gone too. Importing the "backup" from the old phone doesn't do poo poo. gently caress you, Google.

I can't help you with your main problem, but for this one, just keep trying to import the backup, and try force closing the app. It'll work eventually. May have to sleep on it. I've changed phones twice in 2 months and both times it took a bit, but did eventually happen

I did notice that some of it seems to be showing up this morning. Not complete, but I'll keep checking.

The device backup is just a big inconvenience. Had to look at a screenshot I just happened to save from a few months ago to sort of reconstruct the layout on my home screen.

Aside from that, what a nice upgrade. I'll miss the free (saver quality) photo storage from the P5, but the zoom lens alone makes up for it.

Did you configure Timeline? Google deleted stored Timeline data half a year ago. It only saves 36 months by default on your device. You would have had to configure it to save everything.

I think it was phased? I just started getting emails about the change no more than a couple months ago, and went through the configuration to move it to my Pixel 5 a week or two ago (I had until some time early in the new year according to the notices). Now that it seems to be mostly showing up (still missing a couple days last week because???), I've got entries back to 2012 which makes sense as that is about when I had my first couple Android phones.

As an aside I'm not a fan of the change - looking at Timeline on a computer was handy from time to time.

Okay, just to check, will I be able to use a tempered glass screen protector and still use the fingerprint sensor? I get the folks who prefer their phones bare and all, but I expect to use my phones for at least four years, and Mistakes Happen so cases and protectors are a must for me.

Do the fingerprint setup after the protector is on, and if you have a touch sensitivity option that you can turn up, that helps too. The old trick of adding the same finger multiple times is also helpful.

Oh, one other thing, and this is new from WearOS 5, no Samsung cloud backups of the watch. They only enable local watch backups.

Do you still need to install Samsung's app suite/plugins with the WearOS models, or no? That was mainly what made me stop using my Active2.

You can get a Pixel 8A for $500 (+tax). You can finance through Google directly; you're opening a line of credit with Synchrony Bank to do so. Reading the fine print it looks like you can do 0% apr for 36 months (phones only) this way. You need to pass a credit check and be approved by the bank of course.
