Yeah I’ve been happy with mine too. My fave feature will always be the aux port that blends with the primary input as opposed to need to switch back and forth.

I know some similar bookshelf speakers like this have phono inputs too, mine is just regular RCA and 5.56mm I believe.

It's a little over your budget but parts-express has this powered speaker:

I have the passive version of these speakers and I like them a lot.

Do we have an AR glasses thread? I'd like to go on long walks but would like to be able to watch videos without having to hold my phone or lookdown without looking silly.

I see devices such as maybe the Rokid Max AR or the RayNeo Air series, but it's unclear to me if these are what I want, because I don't think I want the display to be directly in front of me, I just want something small in like the corner of my vision or at least adjustable?

I have Viture Ones. Seems like all of them use the same display modules and general setup, so I feel confident saying you don’t want to take a walk in them.

They’re awesome on a plane. I can watch a movie on a big screen without distractions, but I still have my peripheral vision to see the flight attendant asking for orders, or eat a meal.

I love them in bed. I take out my contacts, adjust the diopters to my prescription and watch on the ceiling.

I do not like them for walking around the house. Even in passthrough mode with the screen small in the corner, you’re always looking through the prism mirrors and it fucks up your perspective. I definitely wouldn’t walk down stairs in them.

Not sure where you're walking, but this level of distraction seems like it would work better on a treadmill where you could just use a TV or a full screen AR setup without worry.

Thanks I think I misread or misclicked, didn't realize this was specifically the Audio Questions thread :)

But yeah I do have a treadmill and TV setup, but it's different from actually being outdoors I've noticed, being actually outside seems to activate different parts of my back muscles and stuff plus I live at like the bottom of a mountain and its easy to get some elevation while walking around while my treadmill doesn't have the ability to change elevation on the fly.

But yeah I'll try posting in there.

I've been interested in picking up a multitrack audio interface and a mixer for both light game streaming and dinking around with synths and have always liked the idea of having them both be the same device, but for the longest time the only mixer I could find that could appear as multiple independent stereo interfaces over USB was the Soundcraft Signature MTK which is enormous, somewhat old, and apparently has a flawed power supply design doomed to repeated failure. Now the Zoom Livetrak L6max seems to be a perfect fit but I'm seeing a lot of people complaining about how its sample rate is locked to 48kHz.

I know that'll mean there's some interpolation when playing 44.1kHz audio like CDs or older games with lower rates, but how much am I actually going to care about that in reality? I do not care at all about 96kHz or higher audio formats, I could never hear the difference back in the day when I bought some DVD-Audio discs.

The only difference will be the content between 22kHz-24kHz, which in normal audio is close to nothing and at inaudible levels. You can null a file with the resampled version and there will be a faint whimper on the meters, but it'll all be below audible levels by several orders of magnitude. A human, not an average one, but any human, will not be able to discern the difference.

As far as I can tell from reading the manual at least the Model 12 appears to the host system as a single 14 channel input and a stereo output.

The Soundcraft 12 MTK appears to the host as seven different stereo inputs and six stereo outputs.

At the time I posted that I thought the L6max split the difference by appearing as a single 14 channel input and two stereo outputs but now that I read the manual again I'm not as sure about that as I was.

I am mostly interested in having something that can appear as at least two separate audio devices so I can easily route game audio to one channel pair and voice chat to a different one when streaming. I haven't seen anything other than the Soundcraft

one of my edifier stereo speakers I have for my desktop does a sort of.. I don't know what to call it, maybe a whine sound at certain frequencies, usually when someone is talking since i notice it more often while watching youtube videos. If i flip over the speaker it stops so I could just have it flipped all the time I guess

I'm in the UK anyway so availability of branding may vary, I jus wanted to see if there was a general consensus. I did take a quick look at the Edifiers, there's a few options. 1080, 1280, 1380, 1700, MR3 and MR60 which are varying money up to 160. MR3s and MR60s look pretty slick.

Quick question: I have a Revel Performa 3 sub that a friend gifted me. Out of nowhere, it’s not working and there is nothing but a QuickStart guide available. The LED is red when turned on. Unplugging the RCA from either end offers no hum I’ve checked the fuse, tried different RCA’s, power cord, and double checked the receiver setup. Is the plate amp dead? Am I missing anything to test?

Great.

Looking for portable Bluetooth speaker recommendations at the sub $100 range, stereo preferred. Mostly for fairly quiet listening in a small room indoors that occasionally gets turned up.

I was thinking of going with the Wirecutter recommendation of Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4, but that's single speaker mono only.

Or maybe I can be argued into the notion that a speaker that small can't do great stereo separation anyway and one good speaker is better than two less good ones.

I don't have golden ears, but I can't not notice crappy sound.

qirex
Feb 15, 2001

I think just the lack of physical distance between the channels with one speaker means you won’t really get a good stereo image anyway.

I don’t have a ton of experience with these other than having to listen to my neighbors blast crappy autotune pop but if you can stretch your budget a bit something like this would be good option for a non-portable one. I think JBL is generally a safe choice as well.

doctorfrog
Mar 14, 2007

Great.

Thanks for the input. I think I can live with mono. The price is firm, though, I'm on a budget. Size budget, too, footprint no larger than a small bookshelf speaker. Plug-in or battery-powered, doesn't matter, though I'd slightly prefer a plug-in so I don't end up with an e-waste brick over time.*

Maybe it doesn't matter all that much at the sub-$100 price point what I get, they're all going to be fairly mediocre (which is ok by me, I just don't want flashy junk).

*I pessimistically assume the power requirement is such that when the battery dies, it won't be able to run on a charger.

edit:
At the moment, looking at these, and I assume they're all generally going to do ok:

*I'd estimate that their recommendations stink at least a third of the time
** they must take their design cues from Casio watches. But looks are not important here.

I've heard two jbl bluetooth speakers and in both cases I was kinda impressed with what came out of it, even the two packs of cigarettes sized ones. In general they're also pretty good with spare parts availability, although I don't know about batteries specifically.

I have a blue Anker speaker that I paid like $25 or $30 for back in 2018 and it’s been more than adequate to play music and podcasts and whatnot in labs, bathrooms, kitchens, outside, etc. Nice and portable too, fits comfortably in a backpack bottle pocket, etc.

Still kicking, haven’t timed out the battery but it seems fine enough. Materials/rubber coating are holding up well. It’s currently living on the bathroom counter for “morning routine audio” duty and I charge it like once every two weeks/when it runs out of juice.

I’ve always been vaguely meaning to replace it with something more permanent/that can connect to a WiFi-based system like Wiim or AirPlay or whatever, but it does the job, it resists water well, and it’s not a pain in the rear end to switch on and connect to, so I’ve just kept using it, which is about as good of an endorsement as I can give a seven year old Bluetooth speaker, especially one that I bought as a stopgap/budget buy

Yeah, I'm sorta hoping I can find a way to cover it up, but it's not a deal breaker. The JBL has a full on light show screensaver on the back of it (though you can turn it off), and I personally find their oversized logo to be more gaudy, the sort of thing I'd want to peel off if possible. But yeah, tertiary preference, classy poo poo requires more dollars than I got atm.

So I've been using 3 audio devices with my laptop:

1. Steelseries Arctis Nova 1 (I don't use the built-in mic)
2. Maono AU-PM360TR (this is the mic I use)
3. Edifier G2000 (speakers)

The headset and mic are connected to the laptop through a 3.5mm jack (I use a 2 female-1 male splitter), while the speakers are connected via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth connection is pretty stable but the audio goes noticeably out of sync when I try to play video. Any ideas? I've been thinking of connecting the speakers to a USB splitter (since I'm short on ports), would that solve my issue?

I used to plug in a previous pair of speakers (also Edifier) via USB but I was getting some frequent Windows 11 crashing issues so I switched to Bluetooth instead. I feel like it's a Win11 thing as I used to have a similar configuration that worked fine with my previous laptop, which was on Win10. (Sorry if this is confusing!)

Sometimes the bluetooth driver is aware and can report back what the latency is and the software playing video can adjust by holding back the video the same amount of time. This will not work for video games at all, but for actual video, sometimes maybe, depending. Bluetooth is a horrifying house of cards, and there's not a sane thing you can do to fix it when it doesn't work right as far as I'm aware.

Generally plugging the speakers into a usb port should not have that problem. Plugging them into a usb hub should also be fine, as long as it's a hub and not some oddball split cable that came with another poorly designed device. I'm assuming the speakers get their power from somewhere else, so that shouldn't be a problem either. I don't know what was up with the crashing, that's obviously not acceptable, let's hope that was specific to the other hardware.

Update: It's good. Sound kinda brings me back to my dad's bookshelf stereo system back in the 80's (laudatory). And at the range at which I listen to it, the stereo separation is decent, but of course it has to be positioned right in front of you, otherwise it doesn't really matter.

Downside is it's kinda funny looking with the halfhearted forced perspective 'squashed octagon' appearance and large, centrally placed logo, though surrounded by my books and geegaws it more or less blends in.

It's no frills, no mic, no light show, no ****ing apps. It's just a speaker. Dang happy with it.

Sorry for the late reply, my previous pair was powered by USB, while my new speakers have their own dedicated plug. So I guess that should reduce problems.

What audio receiver model number do you have right now? Depending on if it has zone 2 pre-outs, you could get a pretty inexpensive solution
