Sri.Theo posted:The just announced WiiM amp it says it has Spotify connect. Does anyone know if Spotify will let you cast to Sonos speakers at the same time as a Spotify connect device? Does the Spotify app let you select multiple outputs? If not the best way to do this is probably Airplay if you’ve got an iPhone or iPad. I solved my “mix Sonos with other stuff” problem in the most expensive possible way Roon so I can’t give more specific advice.

RCA splitters almost always do something stupid. Maybe try a cheap crossover from the world of car audio?

Fozzy The Bear posted:Do people still buy dedicated mp3 players? I have an ipod shuffle 2GB, but its lack of Bluetooth and only 2gb is really a drag. There are brands that make decent ones, Hiby, Fiio, Shanling, Aune, etc. a lot of them are pretty much cheap android phones with no cell radio and a headphone jack. There’s also a bunch that use roughly the iPod Nano form factor between $100 and 200. https://hifigo.com/collections/portable https://aoshida-audio.com/collections/portable-player https://www.linsoul.com/collections/digital-audio-players E: oh yeah there’s a dedicated thread for these as well

Bluetooth isn’t really for that, it’s more of a Wi-Fi thing. You could get two Wiim minis and Chromecast to them.

70V stuff is pretty specialized, it’s obviously not new technology but limited to commercial/professional installs so you might want to talk to an actual AV company about it.

The only audio streamers with native Apple music support are the expensive Sonos Port, the also expensive Fiio R7 [which is basically just an android phone glued to a DAC/amp] and the even more expensive Eversolo A6 and A8. Everything else is Airplay. There's kind of one exception which is the Apple TV which has the downside of needing the display to be on, which I assume would be kind of A Thing with a projector in the mix.

For $300 there's also the Wiim amp which has a remote available and could reduce the box count slightly.

SweetMercifulCrap! posted:Hey quick question - if one has a 2.1 speaker setup connected to an AV receiver, is it better to use a PCM 2.0 or PCM 5.1 (which the receiver will down mix to 2.1) signal? They should be roughly the same, difference is in surround content you’ll get the LFE channel instead of just the normal crossover point. Not sure if there’s much of a difference net net, I’d guess a lot of movie soundtracks can really lean on the LFE.

Sounds like room acoustics but you could switch them if you’re concerned it’s a hardware thing. You might just need to make a small L/R balance tweak.

Johnny Truant posted:Not entirely sure if this is the thread for it, but I'm looking for a rec for an alarm clock that can use customizable songs as the alarm, and preferably (not necessary though) can have different times for week days versus weekends? That said I love having a music alarm and it’s super flexible wrt scheduling. Multiple alarms, specific days of the week, different playlists, etc. all there. I also like falling asleep to music so when these die I’m replacing them with something with the same capabilities [probably bluesound]

There is a bunch of music actually mixed in Atmos but I can’t help but believe it’s mostly a gimmick for headphones. The toggle should only make a difference for Atmos tracks, if it’s doing something to stereo music that’s weird.

Not my area of expertise but a 6-6.5" plus the surround will probably fit. The depth will probably limit your choice more than anything because I think 5" is standard. There's several options on Crutchfield though. [had to use tinyurl because of brackets in the link]

Actual full size loudspeakers are where bluetooth sounds the worst in my experience, modern portable stuff is designed around its limitations.

Also try setting everything to bitstream stereo since you only have 2 speakers anyway. This solved the bulk of my ARC quirks.

DSD is the format for people who are upset they can't use green highlighters to "improve" the sound of their CDs anymore. Its "popularity" is because of its obscurity, limited support and expense [the license fees are still stupid high]. Moderately high resolution PCM [I'm looking for the exact numbers but it might be as low as 24/96] has a lower noise floor so if you convert it you're not missing anything. Also much like most super high resolution music the releases are almost all up-sampled from 16/44 or 24/48 anyway.

High res audio is fun because every so often some well meaning but naive person will ask "well it can't all be completely useless, can it? I mean they made this huge deal out of it and all these glowing reviews"

It’s impressive that Samsung have been so bad at CEC for like two full decades now. Uniquely bad in an industry chock full of unfinished, buggy software.

For $150 Edifier speakers are probably worth looking at.

I think just the lack of physical distance between the channels with one speaker means you won’t really get a good stereo image anyway. I don’t have a ton of experience with these other than having to listen to my neighbors blast crappy autotune pop but if you can stretch your budget a bit something like this would be good option for a non-portable one. I think JBL is generally a safe choice as well.

I find a chrome logo gaudier than a featureless black cylinder but you do you. I'm sure it'll sound fine.

A usb audio interface is probably what you’re looking for, something like a Focusrite Scarlett or MOTU M2 would take care of all that, headphones, mic and line out for the speakers
