Plexamp says it requires access to a Plex Media Server. I can't just use it to play files directly from my hard drive? I think I need something that can do that, unless a Plex media server is something that I just shouldn't be living without.

If you'd like to be able to listen to your PC music files anywhere, Plex/PlexAmp is pretty great. It's great to have on my phone for use with headphones and car stereos.

I bought into Plex years ago when they had a lifetime PlexPass for a flat fee, so not sure what's available with a free server these days. The Plex thread probably has answers: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3620605

All that said, I use Foobar on my PC despite having the ability to use PlexAmp there as well.

Hope that works for you. If the sound is still bad then they are likely damaged (tweeter or crossover would be my guess).

eugh, my speakers amp spring clasp things broke, and I cant keep the wires touching metal
any ideas how to set them in place?

The right way to do this would be to replace it or upgrade to 5 way posts or something.
https://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Conductor-Speaker-Terminal/dp/B0002KRCGI or similar to replace.

A pin plug might occupy enough space to maintain contact and can be attached to the end of the speaker wire:

The cheap, temporary way to do it would be to wedge something non-conductive in there along with the speaker wire to ensure it stays in contact. A wooden or plastic toothpick might work.

Not sure where you're walking, but this level of distraction seems like it would work better on a treadmill where you could just use a TV or a full screen AR setup without worry.

To be more helpful, there's a VR thread in games that might have more posters able to provide input: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3901021
