Wouldn't hurt do do some updating as the next season comes ever closer to reality. First, the shorts released since the last post: The Magic of Rapid Movement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr_8koqGgTA Magic that cools the body https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD_T-TLBR9I Magic that seals away special abilities https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5X1q7ipaic There was a post of some key art from the coming season on BlueSky today: https://bsky.app/profile/catsuka.bsky.social/post/3lzqb2kgy722u Keeping it a link because spoilers. EDIT Almost forgot: Season 2 starts 1/16. FRIEREN FRIDAYS ARE BACK! Doodles fucked around with this message at 03:34 on Sep 27, 2025 |

I've been watching this with my 13-y-o. We went in pretty blind (which I enjoy doing with anime - you never know where the hell you're gonna be taken; though I do check age appropriateness) and it's been a blast. Feels low stakes in a way - the big bad has already been defeated at the beginning of the story, and Frieren is pretty OP in general... indeed Fern is hardly a slouch herself - but it's so enjoyable following the characters. Frieren herself is just adorable. I want her to scrunch my hair when I've done a good job at something. I haven't read the manga but I assume some more peril/conflict will be introduced, either involving the Demon King back from the grave, or Serie, who doesn't seem very nice or mature for someone wielding so much power. My daughter was outraged for days that she failed Frieren in the 1st Class Mage test. Anyway, I'm totally down for more whatever happens, and delighted to read there'll be more in January. Thought I'd also post a drawing my daughter did a couple of days ago for her friend's birthday card. ![]()

Thats fantastic art. Congrats, Frieren is definitely among the best anime (of all time). A stellar adaptation.

Thanks for the nice comments! I can take no credit for her drawing skills, sadly.

She's going to be sharing a table in the Artist Alley of an anime con by the time she's 18. ( o_o)-b

Nice art! I haven't read the Manga either, but I dont think a sudden Big Bad popping up would fit the vibe of the show -- most of the obstacles relate to the characters themselves (Stark and the dragon, the Mage Test being a requesite to travel where they need to go). The closest things to big antagonists were Aura, a leftover of the previous journey, and (spoiler in case you're not to the Mage Exams yet) Frieren's own outsized magical capabilities. I think what makes the series so good is that the world building is nice and languid but also has narrative impact. And yeah, Serie's a jerk but she also has an outsized life expectancy. If you had to deal with a bunch of ankle-biters bugging you ever few hundred years you probably wouldn't have need for their sense of politeness ir decorum either.

FilthyImp posted:Nice art! Agreed. "Assume" was entirely the wrong word on my part - I don't know why I typed that. I meant that I wondered if it would happen, but it's quite pointed how the story begins immediately following the completion of the big quest, then has several big time skips. It's clear the focus is the characters, and in particular Frieren considering her attitudes towards life in general and how she perceives and interacts with her much shorter-lived friends, both in terms of the various vignettes with her current posse and the frequent flashbacks to her party that defeated the Demon King. Himmel in particular seems to loom large. Apart from being in love with Frieren (or at least attracted to her), an emotion she seems to not really feel, he is also shown repeatedly to care quite a bit about his legacy, something that doesn't really factor in much to her thinking, given her lifespan. Serie seems to serve as a more direct comparator to Frieren, being the same species, but while she is similarly detached she is much more utilitarian, deriding Frieren for the simplicity and lack of use for her favourite spell. Aura was a funny example of Frieren's power... like, she is built up as really powerful by her servants and then when she faces off with Frieren it's like, nope; Frieren's been concealing her mana and vastly outpowers her - bye Aura! Almost like the series is saying, "see, this isn't about Frieren overcoming powerful enemies". I mean, she's already defeated the Demon King; who could be a worse antagonist than that? Given she is heading for the resting place of souls, I assume Frieren will look to reunite in some way with Himmel, and this will accelerate or even define her development as a character.

Im pretty sure reuniting with himmel is the explicit reason she's going on her current journey

I must have somehow missed that but obviously it makes perfect sense.

Going to Aureole to speak with Himmel because of her regrets from episode 1 (about not getting to know Himmel better) was Eisen's "deathbed" request for Frieren in episode 4 (even though he's nowhere near his deathbed because Frieren's not good at time management). Eisen talked with Heiter about it, so Heiter did research in the Holy City to try and find Flamme's real notes about Aureole and relay that information to Eisen for when Frieren inevitably comes to visit him. Frieren is extremely good at time management, it’s just that everyone else is bad at living for a long time.
