psydude posted:So the Houthis engaged in some casual piracy of a ship that only has a very tenuous link to Israel. It looks like a fairly direct link to Israel in that it's still owned by Ray's Car Carriers despite being operated by the NYK group. I guess if you deny your enemy his ports to some degree, it's not a bad play to make people nervous about insuring those vessels or even going for that port entirely. Why let your enemy's economy happily carry on if you're on hostile footing?

psydude posted:I'm not trying to be obtuse here, but how does hijacking a ship leased by a Japanese company that was transporting cars from Turkey to India deny Israel their ports and hurt their economy? I could see if the ship was bound for an Israeli port, maybe. I'll have to check more after work because trying to juggle all this on a phone is annoying. If it's still an asset owned by an Israeli oligarch then it's not too surprising. I'm thinking of the flurry of activity post invasion to put pain on Russian elites, but I am leaving assumptions on the table about how this ownership is structured. Sure, it's going to also sting the Japanese group renting the boat, but surely it's also a pain point for the owner? Edit: ok yeah I need to check on a sane device later because I'm seeing two different ship names being posted around now?? Luceid fucked around with this message at 23:21 on Nov 19, 2023 |

Otherwise I can't see anyone getting in trouble for this, the west is in total psycho mode where all the lever-wielders are giving in to their most base impulses.

Maybe someone places something on an APV? It shows poor tactics for the Israelis but in the end it's just some Tik ToK propaganda. There's no maybe involved about that part of it.

Radical 90s Wizard posted:I really really don't understand why some of you guys still insist on giving Israel the benefit of the doubt about any of this stuff given how consistently they lie about civilian deaths. They've been doing it for loving decades at this point. Something about not wanting to give in to extremist exaggerations or something, nevermind that every Israeli ministry release is basically true on opposite day and claims the most insane poo poo. Given the history of loose RoEs throughout history and all the panic and confusion on the day, and the interviews now, and it really is not that extreme to assume that IDF helicopters wound up splattering some percentage of ravers. What percentage? I dunno, but shooting vehicle guns nearby probably wasn't a great idea so the burden of proof is probably on them to prove the exploded cars aren't caused by helicopters. It wasn't a bad derail, and bulletsponges insight into why it's a possibility was cool.

knox_harrington posted:At least we established that y'all agree that Israel is a country that a) does exist and b) has a right to exist. I disagree. Israel is an occupying force and a genocidal ethnostate, and should be forcibly dismantled! The violence visited upon the occupying force, of which the armed settlers are part of, is justified and 10/7 was justified too. Your response? (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

knox_harrington posted:Setting aside that this view is exactly why Israel behaves in such a belligerent way; if you don't understand what a "country" is it makes sense that you also can't understand what is and is not permissible for military forces to do in conflict. Countries behaving in a manner such as Israel suck rear end, and I am unmoved by reference to some vague notion of statehood (or whatever) as a defense for their rabid dog behavior biting everyone in range, their politicians arguing for the use of starvation and epidemics against the Palestinian people, and so on. The old adage sticks: if everyone you meet acts like an rear end in a top hat, you might be the rear end in a top hat. Israel cries that everyone hates them, while lashing out as the latest in a long line of violent colonial projects. How stinkin' odd! (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)
