Too cute to be evil

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

So it has come to my attention that some of you people really dislike reading, to the point of not even reading your own role PMs. Well, this has got to change! And how do we change this? By having a mafia game with a theme of "Villains and Generally Unpleasant People From Classic Literature", of course!

What is this?
This is a role madness mafia game for 17 players. Your mods for this game will be Cloacamazing! and Hyper Crab Tank.

Do I need to have read a book to play this?
No.

Do I need to read my role PM to play this?
Yes!

Now for the important part that nobody ever reads: the rules.

Rule 0, the important one that overrules all other rules: First and foremost, we are here to have fun and enjoy ourselves. Please make sure that at all times you put your own sanity and mental well-being first. If at any point you feel like you're having a bad time, like someone's taking things too far or just need someone to talk to, please contact your mods or one of our many community volunteers. The following users have been suggested as points of contact if you do not feel you can reach out to me: The Traditional Games forum moderators, Leperflesh and Antivehicular; and Mafia regulars VoodooFly, Hal Insandenza, Bifauxnen, Monathin, Wologar, Maerlyn, Cloacamazing!, EccoRaven, CCKeane, Opopanax, Sandwolf and Shellception.

1) Don't be a dick.
2) No unsanctioned out of thread communication about the game.
3) No copy-pasting any out of thread info into the thread, especially not your role PM. Paraphrasing is generally fine, when in doubt ask your mods.
4) Do not post after the hammer.
5) Do not fake day actions.
6) Do no post when dead.
7) Don't edit your posts.
8) Lurker rules: Please make at least 10 posts with reasonable amounts of content per day (i.e. don't just post numbers, say something). This minimum is reduced to 5 posts if the day ends more than 12 hours before deadline and removed entirely if the day ends more than 24 hours before deadline. Failure to reach the minimum postcount will get you a warning first, second time will get you modkilled. If you have problems reaching that number due to real life issues, let us know preferably in advance. We'll work something out.
9) Seriously, don't be a dick.

This game contains no elements that are purposefully designed as mod bastardry. There are no hidden components to any role that are not made clear in the role PM.

Night action results will be given as "You successfully [action]ed your target.", followed by any further information. Failed actions will be given as "You failed to [action] your target." There will usually be some flavor text in italics delivered with the night results. While flavor text won't outright lie to you, it also isn't part of your result text. Rely on it at your own peril.

You will need Discord to play this. Please join the server here: https://discord.gg/PVfGbKqEa3

At the local Classic Literature Convention, various highly literate people had assembled to have some highbrow literature debates. For additional fun, everybody had decided to dress as their favorite character from classical literature. Things went pretty well for the most part, it promised to be nothing like that chaos of the previous WizCon until the first morning of the convention, when the attendants saw that

It would have taken a great deal more courage to follow our hearts and put this role into the actual game, so we decided to employ our brains and not go down that yellow brick road. There's no place like home!

It is now Day 1! Please have fun and SAND READ YOUR ROLE PM!

It may have been a short night, but it certainly wasn't an uneventful night.

Cubical Sucrose, Victor Frankenstein, SCUM-aligned Juggernaut has been brutally murdered Night 1!

quote:

There's nothing wrong with building an artificial human out of various corpses and using it to wreak havoc on your enemies, and you really wish people would stop judging you for it.

You are Victor Frankenstein, SCUM-aligned Juggernaut from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

When performing the nightkill, you may choose to ##jugg, sending your monster out to make the kill unstoppable by any means. If you do this, you will be unable to act the following nightphase, as you need to repair the damage to your monster cell.

You are SCUM-aligned. You win when your team has absolute control over the vote.

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

Ignatius M. Meen, Jekyl and Hyde, TOWN-aligned Doc/Vig/Miller has been brutally murdered Night 1!

quote:

You are a peace-loving man who wishes for nothing more than to help his fellow humans.

Actually, that's a lie, you're a violent murderer who really needs to shoot some fools.

You're kind of... both? And when you think about it, isn't that what being town is all about anyway?

You are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, TOWN-aligned Doc/Vig/Miller from Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde.

Your situation is... complicated, to say the least.

On odd nights, your evil Hyde side comes out and you have the ability to ##kill another player. On these nights you investigate as "CAN KILL" and "SCUM/NOT TOWN-aligned".

On even nights, your good Jekyll side comes out and you have the ability to ##doc another player, preventing any lethal action on them. On these nights you investigate as "CAN NOT KILL" and "TOWN/NOT SCUM-aligned".

Your actual alignment does not change.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

Also, an important announcement: Zoya visited Keats last night!

Amidst the accusations of lying, more lying and what was worst, originating from pop culture, the discussion took a very sudden left turn when Plastic Automaton was seen taking a deep sip out of his ketchup bottle. This atrocity against good table manners would not stand, the assembled characters decided, and made short process of him.

Only to discover that the truth was in fact more sinister, because the bottle did not, in fact, contain ketchup...

Plastic Automaton, Dracula, SCUM-aligned Poisoner/Vanillizer was erased from the pages of history Day 2!

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

quote:

You are a monstrous creature of the night, able to slowly drain the life from your victims. Somehow, this is a Victorian metaphor for sex. Possibly related to how your victims tend to be protrayed as women in their nightshirts.

You are Dracula, SCUM-aligned Poisoner/Vanillizer from Bram Stoker's Dracula.

You have the following abilities:

When performing the nightkill, you may instead choose to ##poison your target, making them die at the end of the next nightphase instead.

When not performing the nightkill, you may choose to ##weaken another player, making them vanilla for the night and the following dayphase. This means that any night actions the have submitted this night will not have happened and they won't be able to use any of their day actions. Any passive abilities they have will not trigger and their role will show as Vanilla (this does not affect their flip if they die).

You are SCUM-aligned. You win when your team has absolute control over the vote.

"You don't understand, I'm innocent!" Egalz shouted as the mob converged on her. "There is no trace of me doing all those murders! It wasn't me! It wasn't me!"

But they didn't listen.

Egalz18, Dorian Gray, SCUM-aligned Godfather has been found guilty despite all protestations to the contrary.

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

quote:

Your youth and beauty entrances everybody, but there's a secret you keep from those around you. Any injuries, illnesses or signs of aging that should go to you go to your portrait instead. You fear what would happen if any harm ever came to it...

You are Dorian Gray, SCUM-aligned Godfather from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Any action targeted at you during the night will instead be redirected to your portrait, making you immune to any investigative night actions. But there is a risk involved: Should The Picture of Dorian Gray ever leave the game for any reason, you will die as well.

Additionally, your portrait has gained sentience and you fear it may harbor ill intentions towards you. As such, it would probably be advisable to hide your identity from them. You may use the fakeclaim of "Morgan le Fay from Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur", if you wish.

You know that The Picture of Dorian Gray is not one of your scummates. You can trust them.

The silence of the night is interrupted by the usual loud ringing of bells. But then, this is interrupted as well! By a loud scream of "WILL YOU STOP RINGING THOSE loving BELLS ALL NIGHT ALREADY YOU rear end in a top hat? PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SLEEP HERE!"

After this, there is silence.

You Personal Muse, Frollo, TOWN-aligned Loudifier has been thrown off his own clocktower Night 4.

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

quote:

Quasimodo! Go and ring those bells! What do you mean, it's two in the morning? The bells will be rung, now!

You are Frollo, TOWN-aligned Loudifier from Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

The bells of Notre Dame shall save this God-forsaken town and its sinners! You shall ring them loud and clear, to the heavens! As a night action, you may (make Quasimodo) ##ring the bells for a target. This wakes up the entire town. Any visits on your target aside from your own will become EXTREMELY loud. Additionally, your target will be distracted by the bells, their night result will be temporarily obscured. This does not affect the action and the target will receive the full result at the beginning of the next nightphase.

To his great sadness, The Picture of Dorain Gray only outlived his master by a single day. But hopefully this day was filled with enough freedom to last a lifetime. His last words were "That madman did loudify himself 3 nights in a row!"

Spork-Chan, The Picture of Dorian Gray, SELF-aligned Rolecop has been found guilty of the crimes (mostly) commited by Dorian Gray.

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

quote:

You were created by a master painter to reflect the youth and beauty of Dorian Gray forever. Then that idiot went ahead and made it so he'd be the one with all the eternal youth and beauty, leaving you stuck with the wounds and scars and aging. But not any more! Having finally achieved sentience, you only have one goal: Kill that imposter and become the one and only Dorian Gray!

You are The Picture of Dorian Gray, SELF-aligned Rolecop from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

As a night action, you may ##rolecop another player, learing the name (and description if needed) of their role.

You know that Dorian Gray is one of the players, although he is trying to elude you. You also know that he has fallen in with a bad crowd. You know that Dorian Gray is SCUM-aligned.

Your goal is to replace Dorian Gray. If Dorian Gray leaves the game for any reason, you will join the scumteam in his stead. From this point on, you will be treated like a SCUM-aligned player and share their win condition.

If the game ends with Dorian still alive, he captures you and places you in a safe for his own protection. You lose if this happens.

You know that, since you are the one who holds Dorian's life, if any harm were to befall you, he would die as well. If you leave the game for any reason, Dorian Gray will die as well. If this happens, you will not achieve your win condition of replacing Dorian, but at least you will have the satisfaction of taking him down with you.

It is probably advisable for you not to let Dorian know your identity. You may use the fakeclaim of "Cardinal Richelieu from Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers", if you wish.

You are SELF-aligned. You win according to your own personal win condition.

Town has won! Congratulations!

Additionally, wologar, Captain Ahab, SELF-aligned Neutralizer has been endgamed, fulfilling his secondary win condition!

NOTE: Discord-hosted image links (like this one) expire approximately 24hrs after they were copied from Discord.

quote:

That whale! He's here! You just know it! And with your trusty harpoon, you are going to slay that menace once and for all!

You are Captain Ahab, SELF-aligned Neutralizer from Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

You are here for one reason only, and that is to kill Moby-Dick. You know that one of the players here is actually Moby-Dick, even if they don't know it themselves. One of the players has been assigned Moby-Dick, but is unaware of this. This has no mechanical effect on them.

As a night action, you may ##harpoon another player. This has two effects: First of all, it will neutralize any killing action performed by your target. Second of all, if either your target or your target's target(s) are Moby-Dick, you will kill Moby-Dick. If this happens, you will automatically ascend as soon as the day opens, earning a personal victory. The game will continue without you.

If Moby-Dick leaves the game through any means other than you harpooning them, you can only win the game as a Survivor. You will be informed if that happens.

If you die before finding Moby-Dick, you will lose the game. If you kill Moby-Dick and are killed during the night, you will still get your win.

You are SELF-aligned. You win according to your own personal win condition.

The player that had been assigned Moby-Dick was Your Personal Muse, turning wol into a survivor just in time for him to win.

The following TOWN players have been endgamed:

AFancyQuestionMark, The Three Witches, TOWN-aligned Messenger/Redirector

quote:

Are you even evil? Sure, you prophecy stuff at Macbeth and HE's evil alright, but did you honestly do more than point him in the direction he was going to go anyway? Whatever. You don't really care, you're just here to point more evil people into their directions.

You are The Three Witches, TOWN-aligned Messenger(s)/Redirector(s) from Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Yes, there's three of you. No, that doesn't mean you get a masonry. You have two mods who can cackle with you, that has to be enough.

As a day action, you may send up to 3 ##messages to different players anonymously. They can reply to you if they wish.

As a night action, you may choose one of your message targets to influence ##redirecting their night action to a target of your choosing.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

Capitalist Pig, Professor Moriarty, TOWN-aligned Cop

quote:

You are the most evil criminal genius the world has ever known. Or something. It's kind of disappointing how you only show up for like two stories in the original Sherlock Holmes stories, and that just because Doyle really wanted to kill Holmes off, so suddenly there's this evil genius counterpart of him. Other adaptations usually give you something more to work with.

You are Professor James Moriarty, TOWN-aligned Cop from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.

As a night action, you may ##cop another player, finding out if their alignment is SCUM or NOT SCUM.

You may be town-aligned in this game, but you are still pretty evil, so it works like that for you.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

CirclMastr, Monsieur de Villefort, TOWN-aligned Doublevoter

quote:

You have a lot of political influence, and you would gladly sacrifice your father for it. Or your son. Or your wife. Or that rando you just met. Hell, that one's the easiest!

You are Monsieur de Villefort, TOWN-aligned Doublevoter from Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo.

As a public day action, you may ##doublevote, giving you an additional vote on a target of your choice. You may remove this vote by posting ##undoublevote so you can place it somewhere else.

Please ping your mods when using this action. There may be a delay until it's visible in votefinder. It will still be counted from the time you posted it when calculating the votes for a hammer.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

Rogue AI Goddess, Inspector Javert, TOWN-aligned Tracker

quote:

You must be the most, erm, devoted police officer the world has ever seen. Otherwise, why would you spend years tracking down some dude who was in prison once?

seriously, man get a life

You are Inspector Javert, TOWN-aligned Tracker from Victor Hugo's Les Misérables.

You are seriously good at tracking people, and once you have a scent, you don't let go. As a night action, you may choose to ##track another player, learning who they visited. In the next nightphase, provided the player is still alive, you will automatically track them again. If they have died in the meantime, you may choose another target. After tracking someone for two nights, you may also choose to fixate on a different target.

In addition to learning who your targeted visited, you will also learn if the visit was successful or not. This means that if your target failed their action, you will still learn who they tried to visit.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

Sandwolf, O'Brien, TOWN-aligned Inspector

quote:

Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia. This is as true now as it was a month ago or ten years ago, and if tomorrow Oceania should find itself an ally of Eastasia it will always have been so, too. But there is nothing to worry about; Big Brother is watching you. Keeping you safe. As a member of the Thought Police, it is your job to catch those who doubt reality as it is presented to them, and choose to take another, unapproved course.

You are O'Brien, TOWN-aligned Inspector from George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Each night, choose one of these actions to perform:

##inspect work records - You will receive information on the number of actions that were successfully taken that night (by anyone in the game, including your own).

##search for discrepancies - You will receive information on the number of actions that did not resolve as planned last night, like redirections or blocks (also by anyone in the game, hopefully not including your own).

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

TiredMoritz, Cao Cao, TOWN-aligned Jailer

quote:

There are enemies everywhere. You've seen them; first that scoundrel Dong Zhuo, who you tried to have killed, and failed. Ever since then, they have been hiding behind every nook and cranny, hounding you. Lü Boshe was going to betray you; his entire family had to die. You're sure of it, and at any rate, you'd rather do wrong to the world than allow the world to do wrong to you. Dong Cheng couldn't be trusted either. None of them can be!

You are Cao Cao, TOWN-Aligned Jailer from Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

As a night action, you may ##jail another player, preventing them from taking any actions and preventing anyone else from targeting them.

Additionally, the first time you would be killed by another player's action, if you have successfully jailed someone the same night, you have your jailed victim take the hit instead. This counts as a form of redirection that bypasses your jail.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

and Zoya, Mrs Lovett, TOWN-aligned Baker

quote:

Oh poo poo. You're back again from Musical Mafia. And you brought snacks. WHY do you keep bringing snacks? And how the hell are you town-aligned in this game?

You are Mrs Lovett, TOWN-aligned Baker from the penny dreadful serial The String of Pearls.

You make the most delicious pies London has ever seen! Sadly, the meat used in them is very far from being ethically sourced, being the victims of your partner in crime, a murderous barber.

After a player has died, you will receive a oneshot based on their abilities. You may use this as an action at the appropriate time. Alternatively, as a private day action in your confessional, you may choose to ##give one of your oneshots to another player. Pies for everybody!

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

Finally, with the end of the game, Rhymes with Clue's flip gets unjanitored:

quote:

You have studied every subject you could possibly think of, but nothing has satisfied you. Now there's a poodle in your study, who promises you everything you could ask for, but at a price. What will you do?

You are Heinrich Faust, TOWN-aligned Pactmaker from Goethe's Faust.

The demon in your study is offering you anything you want. Literally anything. For a price...

At any point in the game, you may ##ask for a boon from the demon (represented by your mod team) as a private action in your confessional. This can be anything you want. You are dealing with a demon (or, well, two mods), however, so there may be some... creative interpretations depending on what your demands are.

There is also the small matter of the price to pay... After receiving and using the third boon, you will die at the end of the current phase.

You are TOWN-aligned. You win when all threats to town have been removed.

quote:

The demon gives a long, demonic laugh as you speak your final wish. You feel yourself transform, becoming a vessel of the pure power that you demanded. But with it comes the knowledge that a mere mortal like yourself is not capable of wielding such power. You will require someone else here. A... Pactmaker.

You have received omnipotent power! Sadly, this power was not meant for a mere player to wield. Choose another player to create a pact with them. They will receive the ability to ask three boons of you.

Once the pact is formed, the two of you will be placed in a masonry. You will no longer be an active player and your flip will be janitored. Your target will have the ability to ask you for three boons, which you can grant. You will have input on how exactly to resolve these boons, although the final decision lies with the mods.

After the third boon has been granted, your target will die and you will be free, ascending to obs with a full flip and an orthowin. It's up to your discretion if you want to share these details with your pactmaker...

This was a rough one for scum. Most of the things that I had counted on to balance things in their favor (Godfather+, wol being more of an anti-town role since Moby-Dick was exclusively rolled among town players, Spork being a traitor) didn't come to pass way too late, when scum was already imploding.
