Something I've been doing more lately is watching scary things before bed. This weekend ritual gets me perfectly sleepypilled for whatever reason. But the intention of this thread isn't to find cozy videos, its to find scary things! I want to find more channels related to cryptid/scifi, rather than unsolved mysteries/murders.

Here's a few I discovered lately that are exactly my jam:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWNMsZ44ooc
Basically "found footage" in some abandoned liminal space mall. Quite horrifying even if the thumbnail gives the scary thing away. I died when I realized the uploader of this is somehow only 18. Definitely want more of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyDvpwpRPM4
Sort of like Local 58, but a lot more cryptid (and scary imo). Trying not to blow through all the channel's uploads in a weekend.

Will take any and all suggestions, but definitely looking for things to make me too scared too leave my bed lest the monsters get me

For videos about non-fictional things, look no further than the YouTube channel Nexpo, particularly his "Disturbing Things from Around the Internet" and "The Darkest Lost Media" series

There are many other YouTube channels that do this format or present this type of content, but his production quality and editing really amp up the creepy factor and sense of dread, and are perfect for watching in the dark at night. A movie studio should really hire him as a horror film editor. Also, the fact that the things he's showing actually happened makes them inherently more creepy than works of fiction.

No Through Road is pretty good, especially considering it was really one of the first big examples of this kind of thing

I think there are a couple more in the series, which were pretty good iirc but the first one is iconic

If you've never heard of The Backrooms, it's a horror concept that was established with a single post on 4chan in 2019

The Backrooms are kind of like the Slenderman in that nobody is sure who owns the IP, so tons of different people have done their own takes on it. It's a cool concept, but a lot of those takes are honestly trash. I like Kane's work the best.

Yeah. That was me.

It's still hard to grasp that a random post I made at like 3am while trying to find horror content somehow germinated into this whole mass over the next few years, but I'm ridiculously happy it managed to give a creative kid his own career, and a ton of other people games to make and play. Rolling Giant in particular is good to see as a departure from just Smelly Yellow Office Rooms, and he taps right into that evil feeling of being inside huge empty man-made structures of ill intent. I hope he keeps going and exploring other similar spaces and concepts.

In relation to the idea of dangerous Out-Of-Bounds places, I always liked this horror short from a decade back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_Okf__vMI4

Wait am I reading this wrong or are you saying that you made the original post on 4chan? If so I gotta ask, whats the source of the original image? Last I checked that was a pretty big lost media mystery, so it would be pretty sick if you had some info on that.

The Hopewell Haunting is a really well done ghost story made up to look a lot older than it is. Simple and effective, probably filmed in one of those abandoned houses you see off the side of the road in rural areas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sImMmdeO0c&list=LL

There's also the much better known "My House Walkthrough" set in Japan which has similar vibes to the new backrooms stuff.

There is no source I know of. It was a thread of weird spaces and I did a micro-fiction when I saw the image, quoted it, and wrote that post using one of my writing ideas. It’s probably just some empty office somewhere that’s long since been occupied.

Nexpo was mentioned earlier in this thread (and rightfully so, he is one of my favorite creators in this space), so of course I gotta suggest one of his other channels, Nick and Ryan

https://youtube.com/@NickandRyan?feature=shared

Nexpo and fellow horror youtuber Nick Crowley set out on a ghost hunting journey to challenge their paranormal skepticism. And as far as ghost hunting content goes, its pretty good stuff. Every time a new episode drops my wife and I get some snacks, turn out the lights and bundle up on the couch to watch

Thank you. I can only hope I can get my own horror writing out there soon. What’s Severance? Part of my complete overwhelm from all of this is that it happened behind my back. I made that post, nobody wrote anything else cool to comment on, I left and never went back until 2 years later I see YouTube recommend me the Backrooms. Absolutely goddamn surreal feeling.

Oh man. I dont wanna derail the thread too much, but I very highly recommend you check out Severence. Its an Apple TV show that may very well be one of the best pieces of media I've ever watched. Its a scifi drama series that explores backrooms-esque horrors but also the horrors of corporate life in capitalism? I couldnt do it enough justice in a forum post, its like 9 episodes so its not a huge time sink if you don't end up enjoying it.

Black Gold!

The thing that blows me away about the The Rolling Giant video is that the entire vacant mall is based on the (now demolished) Valley View mall in Dallas, Texas and rendered almost entirely in Blender from the original mall blueprints; no real set. Same thing with the fully rendered descending staircase in the second part (Beneath the Earth). Like, holy gently caress that is talent and dedication.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lmAHZcpwx0

And yes, The Rolling Giant was actually real.

Someone here might be able to help me find an old, creepy YouTube series that I saw once. I might have some of these details wrong. I remember it being about a guy and his brother, who I think had some kind of mental illness. The guy basically cared for his brother and made a bunch of short, amateur videos about their life together and their challenges. The first few videos were pretty normal and did a good job of convincing the viewer that it wasn't going to become anything weird, but then things slowly went off the rails. I very distinctly remember one video that was from the brother's POV where he was filming something bad happening from under a bed.

Now that I type all that out, I realize how vague it is, and it could probably apply to several different "found footage" style Youtube series. Oh well, it's worth a shot. I first learned about it from a channel that did YouTube horror series deep dives and explanations; I don't think it was Nexpo (who I am also................... a fan of).

I mentioned Nexpo earlier but wanted to add a few:

Mr. Nightmare - Some dude basically just reads "allegedly true" stories submitted to him with some accompanying visuals and sounds. It sounds cheesy, but he just has the perfect voice for creepy stories and that combined with his editing makes them fun to watch in the dark. While most of the stories have no verification and I have no doubt many are fake or embellished, most of the time they are at least plausible and are often cautionary tales about remaining aware of your surroundings and taking note of red flags.

Dark Matter, Lazy Masquerade, Nick Crowley, Shrouded Hand: A few channels similar to Nexpo but just not quite as good, but if you like that kind of content you'll surely find something of value somewhere in these as well.

This stuff is pretty dumb but I watch it every night with my 8 year-old son and we love it. Good bonding time.

We also watch those dumb videos of people with potato cameras seeing a tree at night and insisting it is a demon.

"Could this human-shaped silhouette filmed 100 yards away in a snowstorm be a human?

Perhaps, but it might also be a Bigfoot or an angel. We will probably never truly know..."

I don't believe in the Giant of Kandahar. I don't think there is a giant snake in the Amazon rainforest called El Diablo that can stun cows by slamming it's head down on them and then drag them away to be eaten. I don't think Vietnam veterans encountered 7 foot tall bulletproof lizard people.

Still, some of the stories from Wartime Stories are quite entertaining and spooky. Like encounters with Djinns in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It's kind of like a soldiers version of boyscouts telling ghost stories around a campfire except it's presented as 100% non-fiction. You don't have to watch it either, just close your eyes and listen.
