Appropos to last page's election discussion and this being raw since we spent all day at the hospital consulting specialists: Next week, at 21 weeks gestation, we will be terminating my girlfriend's pregnancy due to our son's hydrocephalus being so severe he has a sub-40% chance of surviving to term, to experience a life which the doctors described using the term vegetable more than once. So, you know, that sure fuckin sucks.

Thankfully we live in a state where Trump and his party aren't legally forcing us to carry this pregnancy out to the bitter end. I've always voted Democrat even though my personal politics lean a good deal left of their platform and you can bet your rear end I will be doing so again in November.

I'm sorry. We had 2, both first trimester, and I can't imagine how much worse this is. Conservative folks say having a baby will make you anti-abortion but honestly everything we went through just solidified how unqualified anyone is to judge anyone else's decisions.

Bit more than a "no." It's an "if my guy loses he's going to be president anyways" which we know is their plan but it's a mask off moment all the same.

Dang, beaten on the RFK brainworms scoop. I will say though that this is a pretty good comeback:

Remember the Arkansas airport director who got merked by the ATF in a no-knock raid a month or so ago? All the chuds were out in force to declare that these surprise raids would cause any reasonable homeowner to take steps to defend themselves against these unknown intruders.

I am sure they will speak up on this matter as well. Right?

I know I am an idiot for still using the dead bird app but I have been seeing a lot of right-wing sponsored content recently. Like three months ago, my ads were 90% Cheech and Chong gummies and crypto. Those are still there but I'd say it's now about 70% right-wing poo poo like Praeger U and Rand Paul. Plus a lot more of the "hey did you know Hitler liked dogs and kids? makes u think" guys. I block and there's a new one on the next refresh.

I don't think anything has really changed on my end. Just feels different.

Given that Student Protests are such a fixture in history, have Uni Administrators always been so reactionary or is this a ~War on Terror era development?

Definitely feels amped up from the 2003 Iraq protest days, but after student protesters were literally gunned down at Kent State a shocking percentage of Americans polled (majority?) basically said they got what was coming to them. We've always been a nation of ghouls.

If you're not paying attention to what is happening in Houston public schools, you should be. It's a dress rehearsal for what the GOP wants to do everywhere, and I guess they're starting with blue cities in red states that need to be, y'know, taught a lesson.

Tldr - The state government declared Houston ISD to be failing and, under that pretense, appointed an administrator to implement a state takeover of the system. The administrator in question is Mike Miles, a charter school founder, consultancy owner, and lobbyist who was run out of the Dallas school systems a while back for being an absolute disaster of a school administrator.

The people of Houston have no say in this. The only way for Miles to be removed is for the schools to be declared "successful" - which Miles is in complete control of, because he now has total power over Houston's public education system.

So far, the playbook seems to be finding reasons to fire teachers and administrators and installing unqualified/uncertified replacement teachers and cronies. There were promises of performance bonuses that were, surprise, yanked away like Lucy's football. Principals at nationally ranked schools are being ousted for "poor performance." "Performance" in this case is based around an evaluation matrix that measures conformance to Miles's "system", which is stupid, inflexible, and designed to remove curriculum and lesson planning entirely from teachers' purview. Retaliation for any dissent is swift and severe (often firing).

Conservatives are loving it, of course, because Miles is "showing those teachers how the real world works." Oh and as a TOTALLY UNFORSEEN SIDE EFFECT, any parent who can is pulling their kids from public school in favor of private as they watch the disaster unfold. And with Abbot suddenly deciding to go all in on school vouchers and charter schools? Total coincidence, I'm sure.

It's great
