But half of forever eventually happens. And when it does, there are lots and lots of involved parties that suddenly have the backing of governments and law.

The government is saying that American intelligence was used for the rescue operation (which naturally killed lots of civilians, it's the IDF naturally), but CENTCOM is denying the "pier-as-cover" story:

"How do you explain that, if you can," Maher interjected, "that the people who consider themselves the most liberal have abandoned Israel, which was always a liberal darling for the people who- the terrorist organization who outwardly say they want a genocide, who outwardly are on the one side who is against the two-state solution. Somehow, they wound up with them. Why do you think that is, and will this split the Democrat party?"

"Well, it does, because there's an appeal there," Fetterman responded. "I think you talked about that like last week. You really hit with the gender apartheid…. Some of the most progressive and left parts of the Democratic Party are standing for the kind of side that have kinds of organizations like Hamas or these kinds of nations that there are no rights for women and they certainly don't embrace the LGBTQ kinds of lifestyle."

Uncurrent event being recognized right now: nope. Nopenopenopenope.

https://taskandpurpose.com/news/air-force-b-52-award/

quote:

On December 13, 2022, the Scout 94 crew faced a life-threatening situation while flying a B-52 from Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. The three aircrew members on board were Capt. Charles Powell, 11th Bomb Squadron aircraft commander, now the Director of Staff, Lt. Col. John Conway, 11th Bomb Squadron radar navigator, now Air Combat Command Training Support Squadron Detachment 13 commander, and Capt. Matthew Walls, 343 Bomb Squadron copilot, now unit deployment manager.

The bomber was avoiding thunderstorms while preparing to land. As the B-52 descended towards the Louisiana airfield, its left-side electrical generators failed, and all four engines on the plane’s left wing went dead. With no thrust coming from the left-side of the plane but all four engines on the right still working, the bomber immediately went into uncontrolled left roll, began to descend and  slowed below normal approach speed.

“The emergency was sudden and caused brief but extreme disorientation to myself and the other crew members,” Walls said in a statement. “All the systems kicked off at once, and the aircraft went completely dark, engines flamed out, and controlling the aircraft became a battle.”
-----
When a B-52 loses all the engines on one side of the plane — the plane has a total of 8, four on each wing — the crew faces “the worst possible case for an engine-out situation.”  With thrust on just one side, a condition known as ‘asymmetric thrust.’ Having all the power on one side of the plane will put the plane into a spin if corrective action is not taken quickly,  Gunzinger told Task & Purpose.

Making matters even more dangerous, Scout 94 was already descending when it lost the four engines, said Gunzinger, who is currently the director of future concepts and capability assessments at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.

Roughly three minutes into the emergency, Powell was able to restart two of the engines that had initially failed to come back to life. That helped to stabilize the asymmetrical load on the aircraft.

After declaring an emergency with air traffic control, the bomber’s crew pulled off a non-standard right turn to avoid bad weather as they prepared to land.

“I was very fortunate to have a crew who handled their responsibilities so I could focus on the one thing that mattered in the moment– fly the jet,” Powell said in the news release.

The crew was finally able to regain control of the B-52 at roughly 1,200 feet. That is low altitude for a B-52 to recover, Gunzinger said.

Paging Mr. Nice! and law-knowers... Seems like the other famous Georgia RICO trial completely blew up:

https://x.com/cathyrusson/status/1800225739478073808?t=99iUW8Op8UkT36bxWtW8Pw&s=19

Recap: it appears that the prosecution, the judge, and a potential witness (plus witness's stand-in counsel) met in the judge's chambers for two hours, without defense counsel present. On Friday, the witness pleaded the fifth and got arrested for it (guessing contempt?), then admitted to a murder in chambers. That led to today, where he agreed to testify.

Defense counsel found out - someone on court staff or the prosecution snitched (likely the witness's stand-in lawyer). Judge promptly demands to know who told the defense. Defense attorney doesn't say - gets jailed for contempt. While being hauled out, yells motions for mistrial. Next lawyer for another defendant comes out, moves for mistrial, denied, and yells for previously-jailed lawyer to be brought out to prevent a denial of counsel appeal.

Recap on the bad site and here: https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/young-thug-trial-lil-woody-takes-stand-after-being-arrested

Both parties' lawyers stay around. Holy gently caress a juror just got a bribe on their doorstep? Ok counsels, let's discuss it together.

Here, the judge and prosecution got together for a two-hour chat without the defense. That's a monumental fuckup - remember Donnie yelling his bullshit about the prosecution and the judge being in cahoots? This is an actual, real example of that!

Nothing really wrong with a judge trying to find a resolution that gets a witness to testify. Huge problem when he does so behind closed doors with the prosecution, the witness, and the witness's lawyer. He forgot the lawyer for the defendants!

The Government asks this Court to adopt an
interpretation of §666 that would radically upend gratuities
rules and turn §666 into a vague and unfair trap for 19
million state and local officials. We decline to do so. Section 666 is a vital statute, but its focus is targeted: Section 666 proscribes bribes to state and local officials, while allowing state and local governments to regulate gratuities to state
and local officials. Within constitutional bounds, Congress
can always change the law if it wishes to do so. But since 1986, it has not, presumably because Congress understands that state and local governments may and often do regulate
gratuities to state and local officials. We reverse the judgment of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh
Circuit and remand the case for further proceedings
consistent with this opinion.

Sure sounds to me like the Supreme Court is once again saying that bribes are legal, so long as there is sufficient winking and nudging involved. Then it's just a sparkling gratuity! That's consistent with basically any anti-bribery statute that comes before the court - it gets murdered. A difference this time is that the liberals dissented, making me think my interpretation is more accurate than Kavanaugh's.

Sounding like Supreme Court staff might've done a fucky wucky:

The decision definitely isn't out yet and Idaho's 100% total abortion ban is still live, so someone hosed up.

So bribery is allowed as long as it’s a gentleman’s agreement and not recorded?

Pretty much. Based on the case, it has to be an after-action tip or else it violates federal law (though state/local anti-bribery laws can still apply). Here's the quick case recap as an example:

quote:

In 2013, while Snyder was mayor, Portage awarded two contracts to a local truck company, Great Lakes Peterbilt, and
ultimately purchased five trash trucks from the company for about $1.1 million. In 2014, Peterbilt cut a $13,000 check to Snyder. The FBI and federal prosecutors suspected that the payment was a
gratuity for the City’s trash truck contracts. But Snyder said that the payment was for his consulting services as a contractor for Peterbilt. A federal jury ultimately convicted Snyder of accepting an illegal
gratuity in violation of §666(a)(1)(B). The District Court sentenced Snyder to 1 year and 9 months in prison. On appeal, Snyder argued that §666 criminalizes only bribes, not gratuities. The Seventh Circuit affirmed Snyder’s conviction.

Held: Section 666 proscribes bribes to state and local officials but does
not make it a crime for those officials to accept gratuities for their past
acts.

So by the supreme court's dumbass logic, that $13k obvious bribe isn't a bribe because it was given after the act was taken, with only an undocumented gentleman's agreement. It's a classic case where the supreme court, turbocharged by conservative idiocy, found a FEDERALISM! loophole that excuses corrupt officials. And thus the dissent points out the dumbass logic:

quote:

Today’s case involves one such person. James Snyder, a former Indiana mayor, was convicted by a jury of violating §666 after he steered more than $1 million in city contracts to a local truck dealership, which turned around and cut him a $13,000 check. He asks us to decide whether the language of §666 criminalizes both bribes and gratuities, or just bribes. And he says the answer matters because bribes require an upfront agreement to take official actions for payment, and he never agreed beforehand to be paid the $13,000 from the dealership.

Snyder’s absurd and atextual reading of the statute is one only today’s Court could love. Ignoring the plain text of §666—which, again, expressly targets officials who “corruptly” solicit, accept, or agree to accept payments “intending to be influenced or rewarded”—the Court concludes that the statute does not criminalize gratuities at all. This is so, apparently, because “[s]tate and local governments often
regulate the gifts that state and local officials may accept,” ante, at 1, which, according to the majority, means that
§666 cannot.

So bribes, which are up-front payments, are bad. Gratuities, which are payments after the fact, are federalism and therefore delegated to the states.

Now if it’s done on federal business is it cool?
Say like if me, a thoughtful and honest grocer, was to tip my customer ,the Navy, after the purchase of $$$$$ of nearly spoiled food?

Are you, the thoughtful and honest grocer, rich?

I keep thinking about or trying to parse the yes/nos of legal/illegal, but then I stopped when I saw this framing:

Say you're a federal judge. You're given $50k by a billionaire friend to rule in favor of someone currently in front of your court and you do. Hooray, you're guilty of bribery.

Say you're a federal judge. You've been ruling in favor of a billionaire's interests in case after case and he's been giving you lots of stuff after the decisions. Discounted mortgages, motorhomes, free travel, etc. Congratulations on your extremely legal gratuities Clarence Alito!
