  How often do YOU think about the Roman Empire? No not THAT Roman Empire. The HOLY Roman Empire, legitimate successor to the fallen Ancient Rome and blessed by the Pope himself, was first founded by Charlemagne and then firmly reestablished by Otto the Great in 962. Over time it evolved into a loose confederation of states primarily in and around today's Germany, but included most of the modern Netherlands, Burgundy, Northern Italy, and Switzerland at various times, plus bits of Poland and Bohemia. Eventually some of the princes of the Empire became electors in one of Europe's largest Elective Monarchies, and by the 15th Century, the Habsburgs of Austria had managed to secure the Imperial Title for themselves, even as it remained nominally elective. This loose confederation might have continued uninterrupted and may have even deepened or centralized its authority were it not for a certain Martin Luther, a clergyman whose 95 Theses would ignite a crisis in Christendom, peeling away large portions of formerly Catholic Europe into new independent, Protestant churches. The HRE was ground zero for this great "Reformation," and the Catholic Habsburgs saw what little authority they had as Emperor repeatedly challenged by independent-minded Protestant Princes intend on utilizing religious reform as a backdoor method to realize greater autonomy from their Catholic overlords. As the 16th century gave way to the 17th century, the fragile religious peace between Protestants and Catholics within the Empire has broken down. Sparked by a succession crisis in Bohemia, the Protestant Princes have openly rebelled against Imperial Authority, variably trying to assert a Protestant majority among electors (and thus, elect a Protestant Emperor) or dissolve the Empire entirely. Foreign powers have now been dragged into the conflict with their own goals - religious, dynastic and political. To solve this conflict the Emperor has called for a great summit to resolve the issue, and invited leaders from across Europe to attend. Unfortunately, not all have come for peace - and the Emperor and his allies must now deduce who among their number are spies and threats to the Imperial order and the rightful Roman Catholic Church. The outcome of this meeting will determine who emerges triumphant from the 30 Years' War, and not just what the faith of the Empire will be, but whether a Holy Roman Empire exists at all. Basic Game Information: This game is modded by Josefstalinator and co-modded by Wins32767, and has been sanity/balance checked by Shell. The game is intended to be played with 26 players, and signups will close once that number has been met. I reserve the right to tweak this slightly as I am still making some balance adjustments, or if we struggle to recruit a sufficient number of players. This game takes a somewhat irreverent attitude towards some genuinely serious source material, and is not intended as an indictment or criticism of anyone's religious faith. Do not take any flavor language as an attack on you, your faith, or the faith of any in the real world. Let's try to enjoy what is a genuinely interesting political and social situation in the 17th century and avoid tangents or attacks. We are here to have fun. A note about result language: 1. A result that successfully targets will yield the result. "Your action was successful." 2. A result that does not successfully target will yield the result. "Your action fails." 3. If a player name is ever mentioned as part of a result other than those that require it, this is a mod error. 4. A "successful" target is defined as an ability resolving on someone. This does not have to be the intended target, so a redirected result will yield the same language as a result that has not been redirected.
