How often do YOU think about the Roman Empire?

No not THAT Roman Empire.

The HOLY Roman Empire, legitimate successor to the fallen Ancient Rome and blessed by the Pope himself, was first founded by Charlemagne and then firmly reestablished by Otto the Great in 962. Over time it evolved into a loose confederation of states primarily in and around today's Germany, but included most of the modern Netherlands, Burgundy, Northern Italy, and Switzerland at various times, plus bits of Poland and Bohemia. Eventually some of the princes of the Empire became electors in one of Europe's largest Elective Monarchies, and by the 15th Century, the Habsburgs of Austria had managed to secure the Imperial Title for themselves, even as it remained nominally elective.

This loose confederation might have continued uninterrupted and may have even deepened or centralized its authority were it not for a certain Martin Luther, a clergyman whose 95 Theses would ignite a crisis in Christendom, peeling away large portions of formerly Catholic Europe into new independent, Protestant churches. The HRE was ground zero for this great "Reformation," and the Catholic Habsburgs saw what little authority they had as Emperor repeatedly challenged by independent-minded Protestant Princes intend on utilizing religious reform as a backdoor method to realize greater autonomy from their Catholic overlords.

As the 16th century gave way to the 17th century, the fragile religious peace between Protestants and Catholics within the Empire has broken down. Sparked by a succession crisis in Bohemia, the Protestant Princes have openly rebelled against Imperial Authority, variably trying to assert a Protestant majority among electors (and thus, elect a Protestant Emperor) or dissolve the Empire entirely. Foreign powers have now been dragged into the conflict with their own goals - religious, dynastic and political.

To solve this conflict the Emperor has called for a great summit to resolve the issue, and invited leaders from across Europe to attend. Unfortunately, not all have come for peace - and the Emperor and his allies must now deduce who among their number are spies and threats to the Imperial order and the rightful Roman Catholic Church.

The outcome of this meeting will determine who emerges triumphant from the 30 Years' War, and not just what the faith of the Empire will be, but whether a Holy Roman Empire exists at all.

Basic Game Information:

This game is modded by Josefstalinator and co-modded by Wins32767, and has been sanity/balance checked by Shell.

The game is intended to be played with 26 players, and signups will close once that number has been met. I reserve the right to tweak this slightly as I am still making some balance adjustments, or if we struggle to recruit a sufficient number of players.

I'll aim for days to be 48 hours in length, with 24 hour long nights. This may change depending on real life stuff.

There are no hidden components to PM's/roles, alignment changes, or jesters.

General Mafia Rules (That have been stolen from Yami that was stolen from Natural 20 who stole them from Somberero):

1. Be excellent to each other. This is a game, part of the game is having people react, but if you think you’re reacting badly, walk away, calm down, come back later.
2. For the lurker mechanic for this game, if you do not post 10 times per game day, you will receive a warning. If it happens a second time, you will be modkilled. Exceptions can be made if deemed necessary. Remember: Posting IS Praxis.
3. Don't edit your posts.
4. Don't talk after you're dead. I'll add you to the deadchat on discord.
5. Once hammer comes down, stop posting. We will close the thread once we notice.
6. Flavor is flavor, you’re welcome to pursue arguments on it if you want. Additionally whilst I try to retain flavor justification for many abilities, they will not always match expectations.
7. No replacements after D2.
8. Don't directly quote any communication from me, including your role pm. If you have OOT communication with another player, the rule still applies.
9. Don't fake day actions.
10. If you are directly affected by a Day Action, do not post under any circumstances until I post the result of the Action. Everyone else is good to keep going.
11. This game takes a somewhat irreverent attitude towards some genuinely serious source material, and is not intended as an indictment or criticism of anyone's religious faith. Do not take any flavor language as an attack on you, your faith, or the faith of any in the real world. Let's try to enjoy what is a genuinely interesting political and social situation in the 17th century and avoid tangents or attacks. We are here to have fun.

A note about result language:

1. A result that successfully targets will yield the result. "Your action was successful."
2. A result that does not successfully target will yield the result. "Your action fails."
3. If a player name is ever mentioned as part of a result other than those that require it, this is a mod error.
4. A "successful" target is defined as an ability resolving on someone. This does not have to be the intended target, so a redirected result will yield the same language as a result that has not been redirected.

It was a somber day for all of Europe, as dignitaries from all corners of the Empire and the great Kingdoms beyond its borders gathered to prepare for the future.

Ferdinand II, by the grace of God elected Holy Roman Emperor, forever August, King in Germany, King of Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Rama, Serbia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Cumania, Bulgaria, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Brabant, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, Margrave of Moravia, Duke of Luxemburg, of the Higher and Lower Silesia, of W�rttemberg and Teck, Prince of Swabia, Count of Habsburg, Tyrol, Kyburg and Goritia, Marquess of the Holy Roman Empire, Burgovia, the Higher and Lower Lusace, Lord of the Marquisate of Slavonia, of Port Naon and Salines, was dead.

But that was some time ago. Today, his son would be elected and crowned as the new Holy Roman Emperor. As the foremost nobles of the realms passed through the city gates to enter Regensburg, an omen of what was to come awaited them slumped against the walls of the city's fortifications.

It was a turbulent first day of the new Emperor's reign - for days the delegates at the conference squabbled with one another, arguing over which of the various assembled posed the greatest threat to the Empire. With much consternation the assembled eventually settled on Rhymes With Clue, who was solemnly led to the executioner, and saw his head removed from his body.

Rhymes With Clue, aka Gaspar de Guzm�n, Imperial-Aligned Count-Duke of Olivares was executed Day 1!

While they are devastated, they cannot be looted again as their lands are repopulated and rebuilt. Devastated status expires after one day and night has elapsed.

Spoils of War: War is a profitable enterprise! With whatever ducats you can scrounge up, you may purchase the following items during the day phase:

4 Ducats - An extra ##doublevote (public day action, has to be used that day, expires at end of day, can be freely moved)
6 Ducats - A ##hated stack (private day action, has to be used that day, expires at end of day, cannot be moved)
6 Ducats - A one shot Bulletproof (Cannot die by vig or night kill, cannot be looted, can keep as a passive stack)
12 Ducats - A one shot vigilante, (public day action ##shoot)

Prices and inventory are subject to inflation and availability at any time. Prices and inventory will update nightly if changed.

Religion: Catholic

A great tragedy befell Christendom on the beginning of the second day, as the nobles of Europe awoke to find their pontiff dead:

Yuming aka Pope Urban IV, Imperial-Aligned Pope in Rome and ruler of the Papal States was found dead in their bed Night 1!

The Reformation has been the largest test for the Church since the times of Ancient Rome, and the collapse of Catholic authority in the Holy Roman Empire has been extremely damaging to the church. Your interest is in seeing the Emperor succeed in his quest to keep the Empire Catholic - and you will aid him in whatever way you can.

Papal Infallibility: You're THE Pope, and who oppose you must be enemies of Christ himself! Should you be voted out by the players, this will strike a crisis in Christendom. The next day phase will be skipped entirely, resulting in two successive night phases. This will NOT happen if you die by any other means.

Papal Bulls: As a night action, you may promulgate a ##Papal Bull, targetting a player. That player cannot be voted out the next day. This status will be announced to the thread at the start of the day. You cannot target yourself with this. This can only be used every other night.

Excomunicado: If you are the target of any looting actions (not NK or vig), the player who targeted you will gain a permanent hated stack as they face excommunication.

Religion: Catholic (duh)

You win when all threats to the Empire have been eliminated.

Mockingquantum, aka Maximillian I Elector of Bavaria, Imperial-Aligned Duke of Bavaria was found brutally beaten to death Night 1!

Declaring it necessary for the stability and protection of the Empire, the following shall be voted upon by all players:

Outnumbered and wavering, CubicalSucrose himself rallied his men in a great cavalry charge, falling upon the flank of Sandwolf's Pike and Shot forces, scattering them and descending upon Sandwolf's personal retinue. Cheers arose from the forces of CubicalSucrose, as one of his knights rode out from the melee with the head of Sandwolf, having slain their purported traitor:

Before those present could fault CubicalSucrose for slaying one of the Emperor's loyal witch hunters, another question had to be asked - where is CubicalSucrose?

Alas, he would escape any punishment for his sins. As the forces of Sandwolf melted away, CubicalSucrose's triumphant forces would quickly find themselves solemnly muted, as his own body was found, laying dead where he had so heroically led the charge.

CubicalSucrose aka Charles IV, Imperial Aligned Duke of Lorraine and Bar was slain in battle Day 2!

Exile: But your efforts are not in vain! Your sacrifice will be recognized by the Emperor, and you will become a FLIPPED stump. You will be allowed to post in thread freely, though you will no longer be able to vote. You may ascend to heaven whenever you so desire, leaving the thread behind.

His Duchy would quickly fall to disorder, but his heir Charles V would continue in exile in Vienna. CubicalSucrose is now a STUMP! He may post freely but cannot vote or be targeted in any way.

Remember friends - be excellent to one another. We are here to HAVE FUN first and foremost.

This is a silly game about a fictional conflict in which millions of people died horrible deaths - our beloved dying gay comedy forums were founded on the principle that this is an extremely funny basis for discussion and as such, we should reflect this cynical edginess by having a good time at the expense of the long dead, not one another.

Let's make sure we are putting our own mental health and fun ahead of anything else. If the game is getting frustrating, don't be afraid to take a wee break and reassess when tempers have cooled and you can give another crack at it.

You may also, once per night, ##gift a one shot of any bought item to another player. They will be informed of the gift but not where or who it came from.
