A podium does an an extra D6 blunt damage but you need a strength of at least 16 for the skill check to pick it up and swing it.

This is correct.

I do event contracts with hotels and I just don't use the word "podium" at all, since nobody in the US hotel business seems to know what it means. Instead, you talk about "lecterns" and "risers".

Anyway, to answer your question, OP: the winning move is to use both. You put the lectern on the podium so you can be above everybody and look all fancypants.
