My power is out, I've lived in my current place for 18 months and this is the sixth time it's happened. I'm used to cities where there are no power outages whatsoever. What sort of tech do you buy for power outages? What do you do when the power goes out?

Did you move to Vermont or something It's fun to sit in the silence for a while and listen to my tinnitus I also read Usually have a few battery packs charged, so Switch and Steam Deck are good

I love that there are just more commercials for Generac now, because running a generator to make sure Kayliegh-Anne has internet to TikTok is going to fix the environment.

It depends on what your situation is when the power goes out. Do you still have water pressure? Do you have gas? I've been through dozens of multi day power outages and now it's not even that big of a deal. Laptop will last a few hours, tablet with last a few hours more, drive around to charge up phones. Eating out that much and having to replace all of the dairy products sucks.

Battery powered lanterns are a must, as is a battery powered radio if your phone is dead or the cell network/internet are down. Also, don’t open the fridge or freezer. Leave the cold inside.

? we're in the future. I usually just keep doing whatever I was doing my laptop and tablet automatically switch to battery power and if I need internet I'll use my phone as a hotspot. if I'm reading a book and it's night I might use a flashlight?

A generator. Something around 3000 watts that is small enough to wheel onto your porch. Plug in a power strip and some extension cords and you can run the fridge, a couple lamps, even your internet. Keep a 5 gallon can of gas for it in the garage and you are good for multiple days. Also, keep as many appliances on propane/natural gas as you can. Even a propane BBQ can suddenly be an amazing thing to have. This does assume you own a home with space for this. If you're in an apartment, you're kinda hosed. Lots of batteries perhaps. Looting and pillaging during extended outages can probably work too.

Do you still have running water, yes or no? Everything depends on this answer.

Once the power goes out, I can't flush the toilet more than five times. The power outages last anywhere from 5 hours to 3 days. I am sure there's a power bank I can buy or some other product that will make these outages easier

And that will only power a few select things and it's a pain in the rear end.

The town I'm in seems to have mastered the art of the 30 second power outage. Sometimes at 5 in the morning and sometimes in the middle of the day. Just all of a sudden the power cuts and 30 seconds later it's back and now I've got to set the microwave again.

I worked in solar electricity for a number of years. Mostly off-grid for people that didn't have utility power available. Works great if the system is sized correctly for your needs. It can be expensive though. $5k to $20k to run a very efficient household. Biggest system I even specced and sold was around $70k. This is off-grid stuff though, so the system is entirely dependent on a battery bank for storing the energy, like the gas tank of your car. The gotcha part is that batteries only live so long. Back then we mostly sold flooded lead acid batteries which have roughly a ten year lifespan and cost a fair chunk of cash. Lithium ion was just coming out around the time I left but had tremendous life expectancy, were extremely expensive, but didn't require such a high capacity of storage or maintenance requirements. Eventually at some point any batteries will age-out and die a natural death. Again, the lithiums were the best lifespan but at some point, 10-20 years, would need to be replaced and that is thousands of dollars. Thus, one of the first questions you always asked a potential customer was, "Do you have a decent generator?"

Drive your spouse insane with the “When Do Think the Power Will Come Back On” game by alternating asking each other when you think the power will come back on. Walk into rooms and try to turn the light switch on. Flush the toilets with gallon jugs of water.

If you have an electric well pump, you’ll eventually run of out water pressure, so piss directly into the well to re-pressurize the system

If you insist on living somewhere where the grid is poo poo and solar is an option, get solar with battery storage. Does it make financial sense? No. But it will keep your fridge on and your rooms lit for a few days without sounding like a construction team is outside your house. You may not even notice the outage.

There are great charging stations for minor things like phones or CPAP machines, some very compact like the Halo. There's also larger ones with solar panels. But the most common solution is a gasoline generator.

The power is pretty consistent here. If it goes off it's usually it's because of a good storm. If the storm is ongoing, go downstairs and look at my phone. If it's over, go upstairs and look at my phone.

The rain has eased to a gentle drip, the sun has mostly come out, and then all of a sudden off goes the power. Never when it's the absolute harsh center of an awful storm
