At the risk of sounding like a crotchety old bitch, I miss the days when you could see cool live music on tv. There's live music on YouTube and other websites now, sure, but it's not the same because it's mostly just people watching it that already know about the band or performer. Back when there was live music on late night tv, and the music channels, sometimes you didn't know what was coming next and you could be exposed to new stuff you find out you like. The stakes also seemed higher somehow, sometimes it was broadcast live like with SNL but even if not there was a pretty big audience all at once. This was the video that I found a while back that made me think of how I miss late night tv music in particular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaOiTXk-Rzk I think this performance is great. They really get into it, check out the dude on the cymbals even he's rocking the gently caress out back there. The raw anger of the song really comes through. This was a song you'd hear on the radio and be like "it's ok" but this live version is so much more real if not as polished. Conan had the coolest bands in the 90s I think. It seems like he had more alternative/rock than Tonight Show or Late Show but maybe I'm just remembering what I liked.

Here's my favourite strange late night TV song: smooth saxman David Sanborn sits in with weirdo indies Pere Ubu, Debbie Harry bravely joins in, and Philip Glass watches on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_DXJR5PV58

That Blister in the Sun is awesome. The vocals sound perfect. Its funny too because they're in their 40s because the song is like 20 years old at that point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxawVMQ02dc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WvgGdivQzE Caesar Saladin fucked around with this message at 05:56 on Aug 13, 2024 |

I'm so old I used to watch this show called Solid Gold where they would play snippets of popular rock songs, maybe a countdown? While models, especially this stunning black woman, gyrated ridiculously along with the music like a very short video: the Solid Gold Dancers I was fascinated. I remember once Debbie Harry went on as a guest star and she lipsynched to maybe heart of glass so badly I was embarrassed for her Spinz fucked around with this message at 06:59 on Aug 13, 2024 |

God I miss Letterman. He really loves drums https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M65Dx0STe2M I believe the reason he's asking is that when bands fly out to play a gig like that they'll rent local equipment. Easier than shipping a whole drum set for a 4 minute performance. He's the only late night host of have a whole week of drum solos. The finale of course was The Professor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw6aWbXL5Mc Rush barely makes TV appearances, especially Neil, so this was quite special. edit: This is the only other US show they've appeared on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNHPuvaHguc

poo poo, back in the day Johnny Carson often had legendary people come play with the band. One quick example with Dizzy Gillespie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAXT77z27q8&t=47s Song, interview, another song. I was waaaay too young to appreciate this kind of thing at the time.

Still a classic part of Americana as EVERYONE watched this show. It's pretty cool to watch though because guests could be Jimmy Stewart or a kid that won the national Pinewood Derby. Rodney Dangerfield and Don Rickles are always great interviews to watch. Imagine the musical recordings NBC has when you consider the Tonight Show and SNL

Zappa got a ban from SNL as well for his behavior during some skits. His band did some great performances on the show.
