Playoffs are no big deal,
don't have a crap attack.
I have been thinking about it, and I feel strongly enough to go on the record saying Anaheim will be a much better team than they were last year. With only 59 points, I think they will get above 70, and 80 is probably where they top out. I could see them finishing ahead of Seattle and Calgary.

Another season of Carlsson, the possibility of Gauthier being a decent rookie, and McTavish continuing to grow, are not particularly outlandish predictions. Perhaps my strongest assertion is that Gibson/Dostal will probably be better than last year (specifically Dostal). The D is the biggest question mark, just because its a mix of not great veterans with younger guys, so who knows?

The fun thing is that even if this doesn't happen, who cares? I can see them being a fun team to watch.

I realize there's a month left, but I thought it'd be fun to look back at my predictions from the preseason

Twin Cinema posted:

Nashville feels like the biggest question mark in the league. They played well last season, but I am not sure if counting on Forsberg, Marchessault, Stamkos, O'Reilly, and Nyquist, to replicate their success will actually work (all are 30+). Josi is also entering his age-34 season, but I feel like he's the type to age gracefully. Like, they have an aging group of players, all of whom have had recent success, so it should work. But injuries and regression may play a role.

While I didn't predict they would be bad, I did see the potential for the wheels to fall off this team. Almost all the players I listed did regress, some worse than others, and Josi, while still good, is looking his age. I am not going to pat myself on the back too much, though, because I think everyone could see this team's potential to be bad.

Twin Cinema posted:

My biggest prediction is that I don't think Vancouver is for real. With Demko a huge question mark, I also just don't know if their team is well-build enough. Instead of the 109 points they got last season, feels like they may be closer to 90 points.

While I certainly could not predict the off-ice turmoil, I was accurate with my predicted point total. They look to be about a 90-point team this season.

Twin Cinema posted:

I also think that Metro division is looking grim. I think we are only seeing the Rangers, Carolina, and New Jersey, make the playoffs. Maybe Washington can sneak in there. I'd be very surprised if any of Pittsburgh/Philly/Columbus challenge for a spot.

The Atlantic is grim, but the Rangers and Washington are the two teams needing to be switched. Columbus also jumps to the "maybe sneak in there" category.

Twin Cinema posted:

Because I don't want to write about ALL the teams (I have no idea what I think about Minnesota), I have chosen to write about a few who I think will be better or worse than the consesus.

Toronto
Technically, the Leafs won their division during that weird "All Canadian" division year. But their last true division win in 99-00. I think this season is as good as any. They are not a perfect team. On paper, Florida is still the best team in the division, but that doesn't always mean the season will shake out as we expect. I can see Florida going back to 90-100 points. Tampa and Boston have a lot of questions, too. And then there's the mix of Detroit, Buffalo, and Ottawa, which I think can go either way for each team (for the record, I like Ottawa being the team to emerge, but I would have said the same thing last preseason, and we all know what happened after that).

New Jersey
Last season was a trainwreck, thanks in large part to absolute dog poo poo goaltending. Luckily, their young core is still as strong as any in the league. Adding Markstrom is a real question mark, because he's in his age-35 year, and it's hard to predict how he will actually perform. If they can get average goaltending from him, I think this team can be at the top of the league.

Vancouver
I already discussed this above, but without Demko, this team feels more like a 90-point WC team. They still have enough great pieces to be in the playoffs, but they are only a season removed from everyone leaving this team for dead.

While Toronto is still in contention for the division, I like Florida and Tampa's chances more right now. Florida obviously isn't regressing to a sub-100 point team. But, at least Ottawa looks like they are going to make it.

New Jersey was never at the top of the league this year, and this season has been a trainwreck thanks to injuries, but they have been receiving average goaltending! Their playoff spot is probably secure at this point, and their core is still as good as anyone else's in the league.

Correct in the sense that Anaheim looks to be a 70-80 point team this year, as well as thinking their goaltending being better, but wrong about any skater contributing to their record. I think they really need to remove the coach, because some of these guys are not developing as expected. They are also certainly not a fun team to watch.

Also, like ever everyone else, did not predict Calgary being decent this year, which is more to do with Wolf emerging as one of the best goalies in the league this season.

Utahs frustrating as the team has taken a few steps in the right direction but it hasn't been enough. The immaturity on this team has shown this year and it's probably the reason we fall out of the playoffs. That and injuries. If we make it to the 9 spot I'll be content. Kinda hope we make a big splash in the free agent market this summer. Marner maybe? Probably not, but a fan can dream.

Utah ownership has said they plan to be aggressive this off-season and it makes sense. They're going and trending upwards, the cap is going up and they already have a lot of space. They could be next year's most improved team if they play their cards right.

Would not be surprised if Marner ends up in Utah. They seem to want to be aggressive, and he probably signs for who offers the most.

I was right about Ottawa being good, pretty much wrong about alot of other stuff though. I really thought that this was the year that Vegas was going to fall off and I didn't believe in Winnipeg or Washington enough.

Probably my most off the wall prediction was picking Seattle to make the playoffs, that one was rotten pretty much from the start.

The joke here is that their D has been utter garbage since Jonas has been out and that pretty much might cost them the post season. Guess those flashy offensive Ds don't help much if you get so easily scored on while they are still in the O zone.
I'll never understand how an entire team can lose abilities just because a single player is not on the bench.

Between guessing the Panthers would be a 90-100 point team, the Ducks would top out at 80, Vancouver would be close to 90, and the Leafs would win the division, I should gamble on sports.

As long as you ignore my New Jersey at the top of the league, and having faith in the Rangers.
