Probably one way to take inspiration from Assassin in the Palace without making it hazardous to play Mafia for town is to just have the king equivalent be a few power roles instead (which know each other, and which all of the other VT know as well). That replicates the guessing game for scum without it being fatal for town to make it too easy by way of saying too much with their reads and actions.

Oh... I didn't realize this was a pre-existing mafia setup. I thought it was based on Two Rooms and a Boom, and I was really curious how the same level of WIFOM could be achieved without splitting threads/hostage swapping

That game looks neat but you would definitely need to handle that like the soldiers games of yore with two threads that would change who was voting from day to day since scum is trying to get their killer to stay in the same room as the town president and not get traded out.
