Like Somalia, present day Ukraine, North Korea, etc. I know you can make some le edgy arguments that the US qualifies but let's not go there please. What was your experience there? Were you scared?

Depends if you count South Africa, Ethiopia (before the latest situation) or Guatemala as dangerous. Not super bad like an active war zone but could be sketchy at times when you stand out as a toursit from a mile away. My parents have been to Ukraine several time recently and it was fine other than a lottery-like risk of getting blown up by a russian missile.

i went to mexico in the mid 90s. i dont think it was dangerous and was infact super cool but i was sold a bag of m80s by a street vendor when i was in 5grade and me and my 3rd grade sister were just whiping them into the ocean and poo poo while our boomer rear end grandpa watched us do it. i also hurt my leg being unsupervised riding around on 4 wheelers. my boomer grandpa stoped at some wierd boarder town bank thing and locked all his valuables up in a locker. like his hunting rifle and all his wifes jewelry and most of his cash and talked up how dangerous mexico is.

Used to travel to Mexico quite frequently pre-9/11. Park on the U.S. side, walk across the port of entry, and enjoy a day of shopping. No passport required back then. Haven’t been since.

I live in South Carolina. I’m pretty sure I’m less likely to get shot or run over in North Korea. (there’s a goon or two around that have been to Antarctica, that place will get you dead pretty quick. Plus all the Aus goons who live in a country where literally everything wants to kill you)

They lived in a trailer in the middle of what I can only describe as a mix of very tall grass and very tall trees, with dirt roads and a fishing store that I guess also served as a place where they bought milk. South Carolina definitely has that Ominous White Boy vibe happenin.

My sense of dangerous is hosed because I grew up in Bangladesh. I've been all over SE Asia and never felt particularly threatened even though I hear Thailand, India, and Nepal are dangerous. Egypt was fun, lots of friendly street dogs. I went to Guatemala earlier this year and thought it kicked rear end. I plan to take my sister to stay in one of those monasteries in Antigua. It was like shorter Kathmandu and with a volcano instead of a mountain! Tikal was also neat and reminded me of a colonial compound my family used to visit in Sri Mongol. There were a ton of armed guards in Guatemala City because the election was coming up and the people I was with were freaking out, but like... my school in Dhaka had armed guards and a lot of my friends' houses did, so it didn't register as "danger" for me. The most threatened I've ever felt was living in Bellingham, WA. Lots of human trafficking in that area and a dude tried to sneak up and grab one of my sisters while on a sunny afternoon walk.
