¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let me be clear that I think it was the right decision regardless of rules.

Technically, I believe the entire shootout is a single "stoppage in play", and play does not resume after overtime. This is supported by rule 24.6:

quote:

Should two penalty shots be awarded to the same team at the
same stoppage of play (two separate infractions), only one goal can
be scored or awarded at a single stoppage of play. Should the first
penalty shot result in a goal, the second shot would not be taken but
the appropriate penalty would be assessed and served as normal.

The rulebook is not clear on this particular situation though!

I don't understand how the refs did not see the puck go in on the Nazar goal, they were like there. Puck disappears "Welp, guess no goal then, on to the next shooter". Refs gonna ref, I guess.

edit: According to Friedman, Toronto notified the off-ice officials, but the on-ice officials didn't get told until after Laine did his attempt.

Oh absolutely, just that it's a weird rule to apply in a shoot out. I did not word it well. Friedman obviously provided an explanation, but also Montreal did not deserve that win in any light. They REALLY don't want to be in the playoffs for some reason

Why would the NHL reward the Oilers for a dirty play by suspending Nurse for 3 games?

During a second intermission interview, Kings forward Phillip Danault had some strong words for how he perceived the Oilers were handling the late-season game.

“I think they just have their B squad in trying to hurt us,” he said.

Veteran Oilers Corey Perry responded to Danault's comment after the game.

"What do you want us to do," said Perry. "Did he not look at what's happened over the last couple weeks, like what do you want us to do? We're not out there to hurt anybody."

I know this is a joke but Nurse has been good again this year! Still not worth his deal but he's been a 2/3 type this year.

I've watched maybe 15 Oilers games this year and Nurse is still Nurse. His positioning is bad beyond words. It's not bad the way Justin Faulk's positioning is bad because Faulk just doesn't give a poo poo. Nurse is always busting his rear end. He just has the worst defensive instincts I've ever seen in anyone who played in the NHL as a defenseman. The Oilers constantly give up goals where Nurse is supposed to be between the shooter and the net, but isn't. Not like he went chasing the puck JMFJ style, he's there, but he's... not there. He's kinda slightly off to one side, letting the shooter have a clear look at the goalie. (edit for clarification: but he does also go chasing the puck and taking himself wildly out of position more than he should, too!)

Mediocre and bad teams don't reliably punish him for it. Good teams sure as hell do. He is a huge liability getting first-pairing minutes and matchups in the playoffs.

Unfortunately without a healthy McDrai the Oilers' playoff run is going to be brief. McDavid I presume was just scratched last night for obvious reasons but it sure sounds like Draisaitl isn't going to be healthy anytime soon, even if he plays.

McDavid was listed as scratched for rest purposes, the rest of the guys are undisclosed but are expected to be healthy by next game or the start of the playoffs (maybe not Ekholm). I don't mind the Oilers resting down the stretch but it's weird to do it with things to be decided. They basically ceded home ice to the Kings last night.

This. The NHL removing all the cool bits that made it different from the other leagues sucks.

They don't need the old names, but something other than boring geographic names. Hell, they can't even get geographic names accurate (Atlantic and Pacific containing inland teams, Metro including Columbus, Pittsburgh, Carlpolina) so might as well find cool names.

The league having different names for stuff like the awards is fun and makes the league more interesting.

Why did they scratch him in a game they had an opportunity to effectively secure home ice advantage? Why not rest him in game 82 instead? Sounds like they wanted to keep him away from the Kings.

Darude - Adam Sandstorm
Aug 16, 2012

I don't expect him to play game 82 either.

I think he played this weekend with the hope they'd make up ground on the Kings. They didn't. The Kings would have to lose out (extremely unlikely) from last night if the Oilers won both their games. As much as the game last night was for something it also really wasn't so he's gonna not play til Sunday.

I'd say yes but still needs to keep improving some stuff like defensive positioning and breaking the puck out effectively etc.

He's pretty good in transition because he has speed and that with his size makes him effective on the forecheck, he's been working on getting better in front of the net with screens and getting rebounds etc, and he'll use his size to attack the net as well. Honestly in the offensive zone he's decent for a young 4th liner

He also isn't out there trying to fight everyone all the time or play like a goon.

e: like this play is something I like a lot. Kulikov tries to glove that puck down and Rempe just shoves him out of the way, finds the puck, goes right to the net making a move on Schmidt who looks like he didn't quite know what to do with this giant guy coming straight at him, and while he gets checked and doesn't get a shot off, Kreider is able to get the puck near the net now and get it in front to Brodz for the goal.

I especially like that his excessively violent tendencies seem to have been reigned in quite a bit. Not that he's any smaller or checks lighter, but he's not straight up trying to injure people anymore. He's a big handful and is really fun to watch.
