Doesn’t it feel like DOPS hasn’t done much of anything this year? I don’t know if it’s because there’s been a lot less shithead plays or if they’re letting players get away with more shithead behavior.

jakes did this?
Such a weird experience this year with the Devils. They're the 6th or 7th worse team in the league since the all-star break (like even before Jack/Dougie/and Siegenthaler went down they were bad). This team minus those guys is probably bordering on lottery, although Dougie is coming back for the playoffs which is huge.

But what strange feeling to be in the playoffs for like the third time in 13 years and not give a gently caress about it at all. They've gone from Devils fans penciling in a Cup or two over the next 10 years (tbf I was never one of those, winning Cups is too hard with 32 teams), to their franchise player potentially having physical defects, their star trade deadline acquisition not living up to his promise, and multiple horrific first round draft misses.

I think a couple of things are at work here that are completely self inflicted -- mainly Fitzgerald misjudging what made this team good in the first place and doubling down on grit and defense, both in roster construction and at the draft (Nemec/Silyayev/Holtz over W.Smith/Buium/Take Your Pick). Unfortunately it's going to take another year of this kind of season to get rid of him, but he should absolutely be on the hot seat. The team is also worse under Keefe by every conceivable metric outside of save % (and good luck with that one in 2026 with two 35 year old goalies platooning) compared to the Devils of two years ago and I'm not at all convinced of his long term suitably as the coach of this group. There's also a legitimate concern about whether this core is good enough. Well maybe not "good" but "healthy" enough -- if your two best players miss 20+ games each every season, how can you count on them to survive the rigors of a 4 round playoff?

Not sure what the answer is. I'd love to see them jettison Keefe and Fitzgerald and go with an offensively inclined GM/Coach, but that won't happen without disaster in 2026 and the thought of that is depressing.

Why would they have a hearing for it if it was just 1 game? That's the sort of length they just give the suspension. They must be thinking about more or they wouldn't bother with the hearing. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up 2-3 games, but probably just 2 because playoffs.

Playoff suspensions count as double the game count so 2 games would be equal to 3 regular season games.

I dont know why this is a thing but it is.

A hearing just means a suspension is very likely. An in-person hearing (not what Nurse is getting) is what means likely to be 5+ games. Unless that's changed in the last couple years without my noticing.

Nurse will obviously get the 1 meaningless game against the Sharks that he probably would have sat out anyway.

He should get multiple games just because of the circumstances: attempt to injure a key player from the team you are about to have a playoff series against. He should be forced to sit out the entire first round.

Phone hearings are required for suspension up to 5 games as well as fines over $5k.

Technically the "max allowable fine under the CBA" is just max allowable without a hearing but I guess in practice if it's bad enough to be more than $5k and make us have a hearing, might as well add a game or two.

Good point, I misread that. Sitting him for just the 1 game that doesn't matter doesn't really send a good message right before playing the same team in the playoffs. I guess I'm pulling for him to miss game 1, just because that is in no way is a hockey play.

In the current NHL lol he's getting a game and 2 would be excessive.

For a guy that was decently under a ppg, Couture had a couple legit as gently caress playoff performances

quote:

That included the franchise's first trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. Couture scored 10 goals and totaled 30 points throughout the 24-game postseason run.

Couture helped the Sharks reach the Western Conference finals in 2019, losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues in six games. Couture scored 14 goals and had 20 points in those 20 postseason games.

well the good news is that it seems like Carolina is calling up their AHL roster to play in this final must win game for Montreal so the Canadiens have a good shot at it.. and if they end up losing to said AHL team then you can't really say they deserved to be in.

Would you rather face an AHL roster treating the game as an audition and playing their hearts out or the NHL roster half-assing a meaningless game just trying to get out without an injury?

Ya I'm interested in that one, it goes:

1. CBJ @ Philly tomorrow. Columbus should be somewhat rested since they last played on Sunday, road games but Philly isn't far from DC. Every game is must-win, in regulation, for them.
2. Montreal vs Hurricanes on Wednesday. Montreal played tonight, but they'll have had a day off. Carolina hasn't played since Sunday. Both team's final game. Maybe Carolina rests some guys, maybe not. Getting points is still kind of important to them since they could theoretically end up with 101 total, which might be enough to be a higher seed later on if they make the ECF and play Tampa or Florida. Florida can end at 100 max, for example.
3. Blue Jackets vs Islanders on Thursday. With any luck (sorry Habs fans) it'll come down to this game. Could be a lot of fun if Columbus beats the Flyers in regulation (doable), the Canadiens lose a Must Win Game at Home (possible), and then it comes down to this game in Columbus.

East race looked good, then boring, then more boring, then kind of good, and now maaaybe we might get some last minute drama.

We have hit objective #1

My thoughts on my first real look at the playoff matchups:
East:
-Caps vs. either Le Habs on the 15th anniversary of getting Halak'd or potentially getting Halak'd again by a man named Jet
-Battle of Ontario
-Battle of Florida
-Meh

Two chances at clean, old-fashioned hate, plus potentially a third if Columbus gets in given how chippy Saturday's game was.

-Jets (plural, not Jet) vs. Mystery Opponent
-Cap Shenanigans Champs vs. Question Marks
-The Mikko Rantanen Bowl
-NHL-mandated Stanley Cup Playoffs matchup between LA and Edmonton.

The East seems to have the best opportunity for clownshoes.

Holy poo poo, I didn't think of it this way.

And thinking back, Columbus rested a bunch of regulars for the last game of one regular season (pretty sure it was 2018) against Nashville and Healthy Scratch Appreciation Night actually turned into a close game.
