First, I really appreciate the monthly current event threads. Compared to others, these operate at a reasonable pace and are pretty thoughtful. So as a long-time lurker, I decided to contribute to the new monthly thread. To kick-start the conversation and look beyond the next few days: Does anyone any fun Thanksgiving plans? Personally, my wife and I are visiting friends who own a Bed & Breakfast nestled deep in the woods. It'll be nice to get away for a few days; hopefully, the temperature begins to drop. Big turkeys are hard to cook, we have a crowd at thanksgiving so my dad always does like a 12# turkey and then a whole breast. The couple people who really like the dark meat can have some and then there's lots of breast leftovers for sammiches.

My wife and I moved at the beginning of this year to the same city as my family. It'll be the first time in many years that I'll be able to have thanksgiving with my side of the family. My sister is a great cook and my mom is too, I'm super excited.

I'm driving back to my parents' place this year for the first Thanksgiving there in a good while. Roasting a turkey breast is definitely the way to go for a 4-person dinner, way easier and faster. And anyway, turkey is turkey, it's the sides that really make the meal.

My wife is working and then flying to Laos the next day for conservation work. So I'm gonna go by my dad's for dinner then go home, spend the evening with my wife and then proceed to get baked for the rest of the weekend once I drop her off at the airport Friday morning. Actually, serious question, anyone here ever been to Laos? She's got some pretty basic questions and I figured I'd ask people here before venturing to reddit or something.

The article states that she is one of two women that they've found lost their lives because doctors delayed treatment pertaining to miscarriage. Just really sad stuff. Going to my aunt and uncle's house for thanksgiving, and will be seeing one of my friends from the boat while I'm there. I quit talking to my parents a little over a year ago, but found out they will be out of country, so it should be a fun time while I'm there.

There are neighborhoods in the Tampa area that have flocks of peacocks that roam around. They'll hang out in people's yards and on their roofs.

My wife’s aunt and uncle have passed the torch to us after having hosted Thanksgiving for over 50 years. We’re on the hook for the turkey and a few sides. Good thing the family is good about bringing food to contribute to the meal. Should be a good time.

We switched over to doing a chicken or getting a rotisserie chicken the day before and then reheating it with a maple or garlic butter glaze. Not an unreasonable amount of food for two, still have a bit leftover to go with the other leftovers, and there is some variety in terms of light/dark meat, breast, wing, thigh, drum. I don't know if it is just me, but it feels like turkeys are absolutely insane sizes now. Last week the grocery store had a cooler with them in the meat department and I legit don't think any of them would fit in our oven. Unless maybe the bird was on foil and there was a pan under the rack at the lowest position. If they had like a petite or small turkey it would probably actually sell really well for as many people just do a breast or something else like a ham or brisket. If I had the option and had to serve 4-6 people, I think I would rather do two small turkeys than one loving huge monster. Cooking time would be way more reasonable, amount of food would probably be similar enough, and now you would have four drums. Could also change them up and have one traditional and the other like a teriyaki or something a bit too weird if you only have one bird.

I used to have no trouble finding ~4lb chickens, and now I feel lucky to find anything under 5.

We're going to be doing Thanksgiving day with my family (5 minute drive) and Saturday with my wife's family (4 hour drive). I wish I got to cook on Thanksgiving, but my mom refuses to let anyone else participate. A few years ago a cat broke her wrist and I got to do the turkey, which I smoked on my Traeger, I did a few beforehand to get the technique down, and it turned out amazing. We don't have any family out here and traveling back to the mainland isnt in the cards this holiday season. Last year we did a small friendsgiving with some coworkers here in Hololulu, deciding whether to do the same this year. We found an amazing turkey recipe last year and it was completely delicious. I'd never have considered wrapping the bird in cheese cloth to help hold the butter and basting liquid p against the skin. It was a lot of work but god drat!
