This is the way. Brined then hot-ish smoked, finished in the oven if it’s one of those mutant Godzilla turkeys. Comes out deli quality.

The Intelligencer has a story today that actually happened several years ago but — not unlike Alito’s Upside-Down Flag nonsense — didn’t register with the public at the time. As we noted last week, Alito has been taking expensive gifts — as the conservative Supreme Court justices are wont to do! — from a right-wing German princess, but it turns out he’s been cultivating more ties to the European aristocracy.

It turns out the last time Donald Trump was president, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, author of the Dobbs decision setting women’s health care back a few centuries, added a knighthood to his own résumé, pledging an oath to the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George. The knighthood, bestowed in 2017, wasn’t widely reported at the time, but the order’s website was updated in July with Alito’s investiture on the front page.

Did the Framers have anything to say about the idea of European nobles granting titles to American government officials? You know, since they’d just fought a war of independence from a royal superpower on the strength of Enlightenment philosophy.

Indeed, they did! Article I, Section 9 of the United States Constitution reads, in relevant part:

"No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."

If you ever do find enough money to try deep frying a turkey, this is how you do it. I don't think that NZ has the rather specialist frying implements to deep fry a turkey (giant propane burners, hook & stand for the turkey, etc)

Could be a different one for armor people as St George was also legendarily famous for killing a dragon, so I could see there being a much less formal tradition also named after him.

quote:

Equipment
1 gallon glass jar

Ingredients
12 Egg Yolks
2 cups granulated sugar
1 liter bourbon
4 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
¾ cup Cognac or brandy
½ cup Meyer's dark rum
1 pinch Kosher Salt

Instructions
Combine the yolks and sugar in a large bowl and whisk until well blended and creamy.
Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
Transfer the mixture to a 1-gallon glass jar and tightly seal the lid. (Alternatively, you can bottle it.) Place in the refrigerator for 30 days.
Serve topped with sweet meringue and nutmeg if you wish.

I went with pint jars instead of one huge gallon for easier gifting. Made just about exactly 7 pints.

e: Wingnut Ninja posted his recipe, it's pretty much the same, aged twice as much, but I'd bet Alton Brown's has a more complex flavor due to using multiple different spirits.

Like I said, it's the first time I'm trying it, so we'll see how it goes. But to be fair, Alton's recipe claims 8-10 servings, while this is definitely a lot more than that. You wouldn't want to drink a full cup of this mix.

Pouring a full liter of bourbon into a bowl was definitely a new experience though.

5 gallons of frying oil is like $50 here, but maybe things are different down under.

A startling number of burn injuries and house fires happen from frying turkeys. A still slightly frozen bird will do horrible things with oil, and misjudging how much oil is in the pot can lead to overflowing oil and big 5 gallon grease fire.

I got on the goon aged eggnog thread bandwagon one year and holy poo poo is it good.

e: I have done similar to alton brown's recipe. It's incredibly, dangerously drinkable. I have occasionally added more booze so I taste the booze and remember this will get me drunk. A splash of some nice brown sherry or tawny port or marsala when you serve it gives a really nice nuttiness too.

It's specifically awarded by one of two competing Bourbon claimants to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (both have their own version of the Order they award, this is apparently from the Castro branch)

You have to be a little careful subbing in fortified wines I think, you gotta have the alcohol/sugar content high enough and the water content low enough that it doesn't spoil IIRC.
