Can someone explain what the practical geopolitical impact of the fighting in Syria is? I'm still trying to understand it in broader context.

Russia wants to keep its warm water port in Tartous secure and Iran wants to keep Syria friendly to its interests, chiefly funneling weapons shipments to Hezbollah in Lebanon as a notional deterrent against Israel. Turkey is pissed because it has a ton of Syrian refugees in country and it also hosts the Syrian political opposition, which has little influence, and also turned a blind eye if not encouraged jihadists from all over the world using Turkey as an easy entrance point to Syria. This includes ISIS fighters. Turkey has its own military and political force that it has been backing against the Kurds, who also receive financial and military support from the West (especially America) because they took the fight to ISIS in a way that no other group did.

It’s a big mess.

To add to other goons points, also a lot of refugees to Europe, whose presence is then used to boost the right/alt-right thanks to manufactured fears over social media.

loving lol. This is the Lake Effect Snow Warning message from NWS in case there is someone out there that was thinking we were going "BACK IN MY DAY WE WALKED BOTH WAYS UP A HILL IN A BLIZZARD":

quote:

...LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST
TUESDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations
between 12 and 22 inches across northern Erie County with 10 to 20
inches possible across southern Erie County. Locally higher
amounts are possible, especially across northern Erie County.

* WHERE...Northern Erie and Southern Erie Counties.

* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will
likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4
mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are
expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially
life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult to impossible,
especially along the I-90 corridor and portions of I-86 and I-79
where 30 to 45 inches of snowfall has already occurred. The
hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening
commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The heavy band of lake effect snow is slowly
shifting back south where it will again impact Erie County through
Tuesday. Periods of snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are
possible. Highest accumulations are expected to be along and north
of I-90. This additional snow would bring the storm total amounts
to 4 to 6 feet.
