🚣RowboatMan: ❄️Freezing time🕰️ is an old P.I. 🥧trick...

:toot: Ho ho ho, it's once again Christmas time! :toot:

Yes, welcome one and all to the 2024 Awful Xmas Music thread! Spooky time has passed us all by, nap it's time for a different kind of horror.

I've kept the following write up from last year's thread, because it covers everything.

This is the time of year where you (yes, YOU!) can and should take some time, and write up some Christmas music. Original, parody, or something entirely different, just do it.

There are but three rules.

Rule the 1st: a proper submission should be accompanied by the words, in bold:

MY SONG IS UNDER THE TREE

Rule the 2nd:
:siren: Make sure your song is downloadable!!! If I had a Christmas present for every time I've had to remind someone to either send me a copy of their song OR make their Soundcloud link downloadable, I'd be just as disillusioned as the girl from Ernest Saves Christmas. Don't disillusion me, goons!

Rule the 3rd:
All tracks must be submitted no later than midnight EST on Dec 20th 2024.

Yes, before you ask, I'll obviously accept poo poo afterwards, but there will be some secondary hard cut-off. Just meet the original deadline and we're golden.

Go at it like the feral misery makers you are, friends. I love you all and I can't wait to hear this poo poo.

(Pictured: my theoretical face if I was a blonde woman and if no one posts any music. I don't expect this to be a problem.)

I don't know how else to really kind of go about this, I can't police it, I don't even know officially how I feel about it on a grander scale but if we could not completely depend on AI, that'd be great.

I want real goon stuff. AI generated music is good for a chuckle, and then I legitimately want to manifest it into a physical thing and shove it right down the metal throat of a T-800 or some poo poo.

For what it's worth, there may be more than one goon who's bilingual and can help with that, but that goon is not me, I forgot all my German lessons from when I was young.

This thread has made some real bangers, Weinachtsmann, Taco Bell Christmas, and The Night Before Christmas(Cake remix) are instant hooks for people, then songs like Baby Yoda, Don't Stop Believing(In Santa Claus), and Christmas Mash get them confused and unnerved after they are full of eggnog and disoriented by festivity. Then those songs are enjoyed when reheard while sober(after the hangover)

I think it's reasonable. Have AI make the music and/or singing for you? No. Use AI as a processing tool, e.g., running your singing through a persona or cleaning up noise? Fine with me.

That said, Gavrilo Princip and the Leon Czolgosz All-Stars are definitely making an appearance this year, probably more like multiple appearances. I'm doing Trees And Trees (AC/DC's TNT) and I need two or three people who can do the "Oi! Oi!" and "TNT!" parts. Who's up for that? Also, is anyone up for co-writing/performing a Christmas version of Li'l Jon's Get Low? I've got the rough idea, but it's not coming like I'd hope it would.

Did you know?
In 2009, 15 years ago, Schweinhund posted the first of these threads. Just three days in, they posted in the now perennial favorite Ho Ho Ho, It's Christmas Time, with vocals by jokrswild. Right? Right. But you were all deceived, for a second breakfast version was made that same year. This was a successful goon project, uniting Schweinhund, jokrswild, I Greyhound, jennyinstereo, Dr Tasty and at least two other unnamed goons. This was the version that would end up on the original playlist and even the physical release (!!!)!

However! In a scramble in around 2011 or 2012 (don't make me look this up again), with a change of OPs and sites offering free hosting dying left and right, an administrative error occured and the collaboration didn't get picked up by any of the archival efforts! So, lost to the world forever?

Nah, someone had it uploaded to youtube in 2011:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL4Js_LaRCQ

Some may remember, or simply have come across it by just searching on youtube. It has nearly 10k views and comments as recent as 2022. It's possibly the only place online to get it from though. Suppose we could probably rectify that.

🚣RowboatMan: ❄️Freezing time🕰️ is an old P.I. 🥧trick...

I can explain the 2012 change of OPs!

Here's a little Christmas story that's actually not related to Christmas at all, but I'm writing it all out here for posterity.

A long time ago,, back in 2011, there was a social media network made by Google called Google+ (shortened to G+). In the early days, you needed an invite by someone else. Just like how Gmail started. There was a thread in GBS all about goons inviting goons, and so I posted in it, was invited, and then joined.

I started meeting goons online OUTSIDE of the forums! I would see real names instead of usernames. My feed would be filled with all sorts of ridiculous poo poo, and my god, was it great. I actually made a lot of IRL friends that I still know today.

Around March or April of 2012, a goon on G+ posted a picture. It was an illustration of the Ninja turtles, in the cold, wearing wool hats and heavy coats. It looked like they were in Siberia or something. For whatever reason, I immediately thought of the British comedy "Peep Show", and commented something along the lines of "Those foot clan never knew the true horrors of what happened in Stalingrad...", a somewhat resentful sentiment carried throughout numerous episodes by David Mitchell's character, whenever he'd see, I don't know, someone being disrespectful or flippant about literally anything.

I got a notification; someone other than the G+ OP liked my comment! Wait, what? My stupid, somewhat niche joke, the kind I'd make on the SA forums and not think anything of knew what I was talking about?

Her name was Jen. I think she commented a reply, which got us into a small discussion. Since she was apparently a goon, I "circled" her, or "added her to my circles", which was the style at the time, on G+.

So, just because I'm nosy, I decided to look through her profile a bit (in truth, I did this with pretty much everyone I circled). I saw a picture of her from years before, rocking out with a guitar, and the caption was "Jxl Rose". I laughed. I play guitar! She does too! Wait, what's this? She has a... Tindeck account? Oh my, she sings? Beautifully?! (and also tongue-in-cheek for parody songs).

I messaged her, I can't remember of what. We started chatting. And chatting. And chatting some more. She's from Montréal, I'm from New Brunswick. Oh wow, just the next province over. Oh, it'd be cool to meet. Yeah, definitely. Hey, you play music? Yeah, I do.

It came up in conversation with her that she's a part of the Something Awful Xmas threads. Hey, I remember those threads! I've seen them, heard the music. Holy crap! Wait.... You're jennyinstereo?!

Man you're cool.

So are you!

We started emailing to and from our probably-unmonitored work emails (hey, it was 2012). More and more. Something was starting. We were so getting to know each other. We even chatted privately outside of work, on Skype, and had seen and heard each other over webcam a few times.

In 2012, Lovedump existed as a subforum. It was wonderful, it was super positive, it was also the place where, sometime around late May of 2012, I might have written vaguely-but-not-so-vaguely post in a thread in LD about the feelings I have for this ridiculously amazing person. And she might've done the same in a reply (major kudos to anyone who can find these posts, now THERE'S a Christmas present!).

I'd never been on an airplane but flew to meet her for her 30th birthday in July. Less than 2 months later, we were living together. When I tell you goons that I love her, that's some sort of not-good-enough understatement.

Skip ahead to November or December of that year, and we're thinking "well, poo poo, you know what we should do? Get some Awful Xmas Music going! Is there a thread already? No? I... I think it's fine if we start one, right?"

And thus was the 2012 awful Xmas thread posted into existence, nervously trying to live up to the standards set by Schweinhund and all the other goons who have made albums and songs before this. What came from it was and will always be my favourite of our collective works; Merry Christmas and the Infinite Santa, a four-disc set of wonderment and joy, of putrid music and shoddy recordings.

O Holy Mouthpiece. I'll Tell You The Christmastime. Carol of the Bombs. poo poo, poo poo, poo poo... Too many to name (literally like 80+ tracks, all with their special place in my stupid heart).

I felt so, so, so honoured to be an active part of such a wonderful collaboration. I loved it all.

The next few years, we were dealing with MARRIAGE, and KIDS, and MOVING, none of these experiences and memories I'd trade for anything of course, but neither of us were able to really partake in the following two albums. But after than, all good.

So while I do not know who was the OP after the first album until 2012, this is the story of how I met and married jennyinstereo and how I somehow weaseled my way into this beautiful mess.

Bless you all.

Unfortunately, I don't think they could, due to royalties and rights and all that. For example, I'm with DistroKid for all of my non-awful-xmas music, which is a service that facilitates putting your music on virtually all of the available platforms out there. Like my poo poo is on FB, Instagram, Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, etc. It's not necessary to go through something like DK, but holy poo poo does it make it easier.

So, you upload your music to them, track by track, and they then ask you questions about each one. Genre, credits, etc. One of my tracks is like a jam session cover of the 'House' theme from Zelda II. When I uploaded it to DK, I had to put down that it was a cover, who the original artist was (special note: it WASN'T Koji Kondo!), and then DK had to do whatever it needed to do to get in touch with whatever entity handles the rights and royalties for the original artist. Once that was done, then and only then were they able to release my album to all of the platforms available. Yes, the entire album is held up until all tracks have cleared this process.

So, for these albums, because they're all by 'various artists', I start to get a headache when I think about the kinds of details and rights we'd have to put in there.

Not only would we need to provide the details for the original composer/artist, we'd also need to put in the real life info for every goon available, and I don't think that's even possible to get from some of you. Like, a lot of goons aren't even on the forums anymore, either from being banned, leaving on their own volition, or... Yknow.... :rip:, so yeah, it's a headache and a half.

However!

I am going to look into installing some sort of WordPress plugin for my website that will maybe allow y'all to load up kind of a radio player so you can have these playing without the need to constantly click on the next one. Maybe there's a way for it to provide some sort of feed address that one could put into an app like VLC, so you wouldn't need to keep my page open to listen to it all.

If anyone reading this has a solution, please let me know.

Edit: This reddit thread discusses how to play an audio file from a website, using an app on your phone.

Goons, if I can figure this out, you'll get your holiday playlist. You'll just have to get VLC or some other free audio player app. gently caress, this might actually work...
