Here in the USA it is Native Heritage Month. I wasn't aware that this was a thing but it seems kind of rad. If you are native or have heritage, wherever you are, sound off. I'm of mixed race but claim Inupiat myself. Inuk.

My dad has literally voiced the old "1/16th Cherokee" trope in the past, but I'm pretty confident we are just profoundly white people.

Back during the European colonization of the new world and the diseases and genocide that followed had the equivalent effect of knocking a country the size of France offline, as far as the CO2 emissions were concerned. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2019/feb/great-dying-americas-disturbed-earths-climate "Scientists believe that the changes to land use led to a lowering of CO2 levels sufficient enough that the concentration of the gas in the atmosphere eventually fell by 7-10ppm." Now the native population of the Americas is above 60 million again, and climate change is ravaging the hemisphere.

Good morning, welcome to *boiling up a gently caress load of safke season*. For those who don't know, safke is hominy/sour corn soup, and you drink it. Here's a definitional page: https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry?entry=SO003 Basically you nixtamilize a bunch of flint corn with wood ash lye to make your hominy go tender, then boil the hell out of it all day with clean water until it turns to soup. We always let it go sour because we drink it, but some folks eat it when it's in porridge stage like a bowl of chunky grits. It's good as hell but it's probably an acquired taste if you aren't used to hominy. We have it pretty much year round but it's really good when you let it go just a little sour, then heat it up to boiling so it's this hot, sour, thin soup. Good if you're out doing stuff in the cold.

In spring it'll be "wild eggs and onions" season. Meaning, wild onions, scrambled into eggs, eaten with fry bread and beans and greens and whatever all the aunties (gently caress, I'm an auntie now) bring to the dinners. It's usually served at great big dinners at ndn church (sometimes as a fundraiser, sometimes just because it's season), and sometimes at family dinners because wild onions are good as gently caress. You can find wild onions all across North America and into the Northern and mountainous regions of South America. They grow near running water or in ditches or in areas with lots of grass that used to be tallgrass-laden because they enjoy poor soil quality and alliums will grow basically anywhere you throw them. The best wild onions are super tender and mild with dark green leaves and no formed bulb yet.
