Seemingly innocuous...
I’ve kept a gratitude journal for a year now after years of sneering at the concept and I think it’s… working?!?

Times are tough. It’s easy to lose track of what you have to be thankful for. I’m thankful for goons. This site has helped me a lot … lols, advice, and more.

Thanks and gratitude to the following goons/threads:

The goon who told me to grow the gently caress up in career advice thread. Made me mad at the time but was good advice (they posted other things too). All the career advice goons are champions, helping folks every day.

The goons who taught me to cook chili on the GWS thread. One in particular instructed me to use *#% loads of paprika. winning a chili cook off at 30 knocked me out of my failure loop and showed me that everything I wish I could be doing and accomplishing was done by normal humans who put in the time and persisted. Many positive changes came after that.

Which goons are you greatful for?

I'm thankful for pencilhands and his fun threads.

Also, I love the idea of a gratitude journal.

It might sound lame, but being nice to yourself and trying to focus on the positive has real consequencs.

I ordered luscious new gemstones from India and made new earrings for my SA mart thread

Remember my earrings and art are much better than my posting

New stuff starts towards end of page 3 of the thread
I'm grateful to all of GBS as I've posted many times. They were nice to a weird lonely cavewoman for years.

Literally a Bird was gracious as hell to me when she [correctly] banned me for drunk posting

I haven't drank since. That's wonderful for me, I would tend to get plastered...

I refuse the idea of a gratitude journal because I don't like homework

I will, however, say that I am grateful for the niche thread dorks that make this place worth it.

Tool and woodworking thread dorks are top notch

I’m grateful for all of the game goons. If the collective gaming hours spent by goons were used to benefit humanity, we’d be living in star trek. Instead there’s no video game question I can come up with that goons can’t answer.

I am grateful to the goon who encouraged me to try a contact break with my abusive family. Single best piece of advice I received in my entire life. That break turned into fully :sever:ing. More than a decade later, I still have zero desire to talk to those people ever again.

The Rejected Parents thread was helpful to read about patterns of abuse in dysfunctional families and to realize how common they are.

As time has gone on I've met more and more folks with worse upbringings than mine and I just want to say that every day you live apart from them and take care of yourself is another day you get one over on the people who hurt you. And one day you're gonna realize you lived free longer than you did when things were bad. I hope that day greets you warmly like an old friend.

This is fantastic I'm glad to hear it.
I broke contact with my monstrous father 35 years ago. I'm not sure if he's dead or alive and genuinely don't care. I stopped thinking about him decades ago.

The wear and tear is greater so generally only the really not lovely ones survive. PYF is similar

Other forums have the "luxury" of not attracting the same amount of random weirdos and if you're a mod or admin of any sub forum that has to do with politics everybody will hate you regardless of what you do

This also means a lot of stinky gross mods still exist in the pits of this forum that barely see new posters. Horrible, wretched things

I was a little baby (not literally) when I found the forum but of all the places a lil teenage me started reading Goons With Spoons and developed an interest in cooking. From there I learned about nutrition, found confidence from information provided in Musicians Lounge to start learning guitar, and so on.

I am a pretty Cool and Awesome(tm) person in the RL these days, and I'm thankful these forums, in an incredibly ironic way, prevented me being a weird antisocial shut-in nerd and instead actually inspired me to become as healthy and well rounded as I have become.

I'm thankful for the NEET thread, the Unpopular Video Game Opinions thread, and the Taco Bell thread in gently caress You and Dine because I don't think similar spaces can be found elsewhere online. I'm thankful that BigBadSteve was banned much sooner, and Clamdestineboyster much later, than I anticipated. I'm thankful that pencilhands makes fewer threads than he could if he wanted to.

Honestly, just a big shout-out to the new era something awful for making it just as funny and stupid as earlier versions, but also such an inclusive and diverse group of goons.

It could've easily just been Elon Musk's Something Awful in an alternate universe with all the transphobia and white supremacists, but instead it's full of threads about hamburgers, video game conversations that don't have some dipshit whining about "woke poo poo" and comedy threads that are the most playful, funniest shitposting on the Internet.

One day, I'll hope to join a SASS or one of the fun challenges, but things have been e/n lately.

I do love this community, and the moderation team for keeping it cozy.
