expecting a full rewrite of a literally ancient business critical application that has quirks nobody probably really understands* is a recipe for disaster * im going to say that backporting a sane date format or adapting some modern tooling shouldnt be a bridge too far so idk what the devs have been doing
|

yes the answer to is probably that the devs have been fighting fires constantly and any requests for improvement or more developers are denied

eschaton posted:the other possibility is that they actually have been carefully and with large amounts of testing migrating things forward, so while they’re still running “the same” COBOL programs first written in the 1960s on IBM OS/360, they’re compiling the latest revision of all that code using a modern COBOL compiler and testing it using a modern COBOL runtime on virtualized IBM z instances against representative large-scale data sets probably yes although if an ibm z instance could be reliably virtualized then this would threaten ibm’s ability to make lots of money selling the mainframes and support contracts this would be very bad for ibm’s money so it is probably illegal somehow

no matter what happens i hope people remember this the next time someone is tut tutting about “oh no we can not do that this quickly and there are processes rules and regulations” the thing to remember is that none of those processes rules and regulations matter at all when someone who was not elected or appointed to any office, and has openly declared his contempt for those processes rules and regulations, publicly takes an axe to something he doesn’t like stuff like student loan forgiveness, medical care for all, you name it was always only impossible because the people in power said no, not because of any other reason that was given

ok elon fire all the military industrial complex then. they are by your own definition producing no value that is meant to be consumed by the people of united states, plus its a nice big chunk of spending why bother with 1m penny shavings from some tape backups, go get the low hanging fruit

anyway i thought productivity meant return on investment or as wikipedia says, gdp per worker unfortunately for elon, gdp does not differentiate between private and public sector well i he is just saying random words strung together to evoke some feeling hoping that some bootlickers will draw the rest of the owl and explain what it actually should mean in economic terms
