man what is with the absolutely bizarre misspellings surrounding grimes and her supporters? this person obviously uses british english, which, fine. but they also seem to know what the word "disavowing" means, yet somehow came up with "disavowaling", "nouveau" becomes "nouvae", "rich" becomes "riche" etc.

starting to think these people aren't so sharp :thunk:

let dyslexic people and those who suffered the american education system have their say online

that said i dont agree with stuff like “elon just an illiterate rich person” which may be technically true but its absolutely essential that we evaluate what checks and balances have gone wrong for us to be in a situation where people like elon hold power beyond that of a vape battery

i don't think many people who use commonwealth english spellings suffered through the american education system

i knew literally one kid who had hopped from india to the uk to the us (as a result of their parents' job) who was real smart, in all AP classes etc. but would constantly get chastised for using british english spellings in our US history class. but also tbf that teacher was pretty clearly racist

anyway i don't think that's the case here, and there isn't much to indicate that person is dyslexic. those "creative"-type spellings were certainly encouraged by the american education system when i was a kid (with the intent being for the kid to learn the word and its meaning but the correct spelling later; of course this backfired), but again, commonwealth english spellings point to them being educated elsewhere

all im saying is the internet is full of people with weird non harmful mental quirks combined with a similar diversity of background and upbringing

and im happy that this is the case, i would rather have someone make a post in “broken” english than hold it back because they dont want to get all oxford commaed

expecting a full rewrite of a literally ancient business critical application that has quirks nobody probably really understands* is a recipe for disaster

yes the answer to is probably that the devs have been fighting fires constantly and any requests for improvement or more developers are denied

the other possibility is that they actually have been carefully and with large amounts of testing migrating things forward, so while they’re still running “the same” COBOL programs first written in the 1960s on IBM OS/360, they’re compiling the latest revision of all that code using a modern COBOL compiler and testing it using a modern COBOL runtime on virtualized IBM z instances against representative large-scale data sets

probably yes

although if an ibm z instance could be reliably virtualized then this would threaten ibm’s ability to make lots of money selling the mainframes and support contracts

this would be very bad for ibm’s money so it is probably illegal somehow

no matter what happens i hope people remember this the next time someone is tut tutting about “oh no we can not do that this quickly and there are processes rules and regulations”

the thing to remember is that none of those processes rules and regulations matter at all when someone who was not elected or appointed to any office, and has openly declared his contempt for those processes rules and regulations, publicly takes an axe to something he doesn’t like

stuff like student loan forgiveness, medical care for all, you name it was always only impossible because the people in power said no, not because of any other reason that was given

ok elon fire all the military industrial complex then. they are by your own definition producing no value that is meant to be consumed by the people of united states, plus its a nice big chunk of spending

why bother with 1m penny shavings from some tape backups, go get the low hanging fruit

4lokos basilisk
Jul 17, 2008

anyway i thought productivity meant return on investment or as wikipedia says, gdp per worker

unfortunately for elon, gdp does not differentiate between private and public sector

well i he is just saying random words strung together to evoke some feeling hoping that some bootlickers will draw the rest of the owl and explain what it actually should mean in economic terms

Sagebrush posted:

yeah. the people who believe this poo poo about humanoid robots on assembly lines have a very bad understanding of how factories really work.

we already have the technology to automate practically every step in manufacturing. loading and aligning material, running the tools, transferring parts from station to station, assembling components, testing, packaging -- there are robots and machines that can do all of those things much more quickly and accurately than any human. these robots don't look like humans, because a humanoid is usually not optimized for the task! this delta robot spider thing is way faster and more efficient at loading sausages than a dozen humans/humanoid robots:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPTd8XDZOEk&t=50s

the only reason you still see humans on production lines is cost. if a person is doing a job, it's because the combination of product, number of pieces, and production rate did not justify building a machine to do that job. if i am making artisanal sausages on my small farm to sell at the farmer's market, i don't need a robotic packaging machine, so i do it myself or pay a couple of teenagers to help. if i am Slim Jim himself and I make 20,000 sausages an hour, i build the dedicated production line.

realistically imaginable humanoid robots don't help this situation at all. just like a human they are vastly outperformed by the dedicated machine, but they also (foreseeably) will cost much more to acquire and operate than a human worker. there is no problem they actually solve.

the 500tn market estimations make sense if you also factor in maintenance. imagine the same thing as the healthcare industry for humans but for robots, because we make the robots as complicated as the humans up to and including “medical” conditions
