I think a lot of people (or at least I) only ever heard about the absurd poo poo he was spinning in disconnected spurts, and never really assembled them together to realize there's no way this adds up. Like you hear his daughter died, you don't tend to doubt that. He tells a story in an lp thread that he says is from his time as a military contractor of some sort, you go yeah ok as you pass by. etc. And the structure he's building is an image of him as this superspy badass with a bond girl type wife and a dead gay daughter and it's flimsy af, but most people probably weren't looking at the whole, because why would you if you were just reading some LPs, oftentimes years apart. That's most people probably, anyway. He apparently had a discord full of truthers at least up until all of his pictures of his daughter were found to be stock photos. Idk if they still believe him to this day.

And IIRC, a decent chunk of the more… obviously fantastical parts of his backstory were buried in his comments in between updates? Like the only things I knew about before the blowup were the dead daughter and his claims that he was a PMC member, which didn’t seem obviously worthy of scrutiny on face reading

Then you remember he gave his fake persona the same backstory as Cloud from FF7 and it becomes funny again.
